Something that helps me have a good relationship with clothes that might work for other people is that when I'm trying on clothes I choose a few options that I think will look silly on me or a bit over the top or will feel like it belongs to a character that isn't me. It helps me remember that clothes shopping is meant to be fun and also that what any outfit says about me while it's on isn't necessarily accurate or connected to me in any real way. I have also found some articles of clothing that have surprised me this way, and they are some of my favorite things to wear

Elyse.. I would encourage to take a friend with you shopping. If the item does not fit in the dressing room, it's the friend's job to go get the right size. Take a friend that is honest with you and will encourage you to try on clothes in a variety of colors that you may not have selected on your own. The other option is to hire a stylist - totally worth it if you can afford it. The bib overalls are my favorite. Go back & buy another color! So cute. The polka dot dress, the black 2 piece and the black short dress with pockets are so cute on you - I would try the next size down to see if the fit is better. You can wear fitted black short shorts under the black dress with pockets or a cute pair of leggings! Loved the versatility of these 4 pieces as they can worn casual or dressed up; think of adding a denim jacket or a pop of color with a cardigan or sweater or color of shoe. A good fitted bra makes such a difference when trying on new clothes too. Do you have a VS&CO or Macy's near you to get fitted? It really helps. I loved this vlog. You're such an inspiration of support. We all need to do better with extending ourselves graces when facing hard things. You're doing great! "I'm not meant to make those clothes look good. YES, I randomly went shopping with my best friend this past December, and she suggested I size down in a top. I think subconsciously I felt bad about my body and like I needed to hide my torso under loose shirts, but having a friend say IRL while looking right at me that a smaller size would look cute was REALLY impactful. Like I couldn't just write it off as shirt looks better in a picture than in real life etc. I tried on a smaller size and agreed with her 🥰

Can be harder to get a good feel for it if it's too small rather than too big.

I’m telling you having a uniform for certain occasions is so freeing especially having little ones. You just need a few more options so you don’t feel like you’re repeating the same outfit for every occasion. Having a few fail safe outfits that you don’t have to think about and that fit well no matter what time of the month is such a time and energy saver. I’ve also found that a few quality pieces from Athleta, Title Nine or a similar athleisure store is helpful, quick dry, wrinkle resistant and washes up easily.

The problem is that they only make clothing for theoretical humans. I’m short and curvy also. I have a friend who is tall and curvy. I do sew, and that helps. When I make clothes for myself, I have to shorten my waist by one and a half inches. When I make clothes for my friend, I have to increase that same height by 6 inches. And almost every garment is made for a B cup or maybe a C cup in the larger sizes. Forget fitting if you have a size that bra stores rarely carry. Again, it’s not your fault… They’re just playing averages to sell the most amount of stuff.

I love that you had the courage to put yourself out there like that. It is NOT easy to face the dreaded "clothes shopping" trip. I used to work at a clothing store and women would get upset and put themselves down when nothing was looking "right." I would tell them: it is definitely not you-- these aren't the right clothes to compliment your unique beauty and I we *will* find something. It was so rewarding when we found something that made them feel confident. Also, I JUST went through this SAME EXACT THING! It took me until 6pm to work up the nerve to go out. I had to call my mom and keep her on the phone with me (which ended up being a blast--it felt like I was school clothes shopping with my mom again; my favorite few days of August back then). I even asked her "where do people shop these days?" I started at Target and got the best thing in the place: a caramel machiato. Next store, Burlington Coat Factory, I was able to find a few tops and a pair of pants. It was the first time I felt good about myself since I outgrew my wardrobe.

I had twins a year ago and I have been really struggling with the fact that none of my clothes fit. Even clothes that I bought a few weeks postpartum no longer fit and it has made me emotional. This video was really validating and a great reminder that our clothes are meant to make us look and feel good, not the other way around! I guess it's time to do a massive purge

Thank you for being so real!!! It’s inspiring to hear that the meaning you used to make from food is in the past- this week, I’ve been having lots of doubts if that will ever go away. And, clothes- clothes are hard, for a lot of people, for so many reasons. Maybe someday, we can embody the thoughts of “the clothes are supposed to make me look good”, rather than something not fitting having this other meaning. It’s so real to know that logically, but be somewhere else emotionally… Thank you for being you! and for helping me feel less alone today! 💜

I'm only a minute and a half in. and I relate so hard to this. I'm tired of wearing only the frumpy things that fit my body, I started purging my closet recently, and now I'm facing the dread of buying clothes. Thank you for sharing your journey on this with us.

Elyse, if you read this, I just wanted to say that you're great. You are by FAR the most relateable KZbinr I've seen, and I have seen a LOT of KZbinrs. You feel like someone who I would definitely be friends with. You are very positive, and make a lot of people feel better about themselves, including me. Please keep doing what you are doing! Also, P.S., what state do you live in? I live in Iowa, and you seem to give kind Midwest vibes. 😊

Omg this is the first longer video that I've watched from you and i have never related harder in my life 😂😂 the energy to leave the house, the pitstop, the wrong sizes/styles. And the clothes meant to make YOU look good mantra!? Chills. Tears. Laughs. Holy cow i love it hahaha ❤

I recently heard someone say that your clothes are meant to fit you, you’re not meant to fit the clothes. It honestly changed my perspective. ❤

I laughed so hard I almost cried at the end. I identify so much with having no idea what size you are postpartum! I'm in that boat right now and it's so bewildering. Seeing you face the same struggle helps remind me that it's normal... And also helps me see the humor in it! I'd much rather laugh at myself than feel bad it.

This video was exactly what I needed to hear, that it's not you that makes the outfit bad it's just the outfit. Especially at a time when I've just gotten diagnosed with anorexia, not many of my clothes fit and after my recovery, it'll only be harder to find clothes I already have that fit. I've also been incredibly afraid of going shopping for clothes for similar reasons but I think I'll take the chance! ❤ "[If your old clothes don't fit, give them to charity/sell them and buy a new pair rather than trying to change your body to fit the jeans]". Thank you, Elyse.

There's so many comments, you will probably never see this one, but tip. You go to the store, you pick an item you like, but don't want to try it on there. Fold the neck down a little and put the item up against yourself. I usually gold the item with my chin then, and then check how far/not far the item goes to my sides. You don't want it to just barely cover you're front, that's too little. You don't want it to go past the mid point of your side, that's too big. But if it goes pretty well to the midpoint of your side, it's probably the right size! Works for shirts, dresses, pants, shorts, everything 🙂

Absolutely love the overalls on you!! Also, I love how you’re working on your relationship with clothes/shopping & appreciate you being open about it because I can relate and you are inspiring me to look at clothes differently. ♥

10 months post partum here and this was so relatable-so thanks!! I just ordered a bunch of stuff from Amazon and returned it all as well. Thanks for the reminder that I’m not the only one, and it’s not my job to make my clothing look good!

First of all, I love you, second you are not alone in your "love/hate" relationship with clothes. This video of absolute chaos is making me feel so much better. Also thanks for the tip. Either try o clothes from one store or visit several stores! I love it! I am a pear shaped human and finding clothes that fit (irrespective of size) has been a challenge my entire life. I HATE clothes shopping, why can I not wear my pjs out is often a question I have. Now on the outfits, that black two piece pants situation is lovely, def a size down, an maybe a different colour to make it more casual. The res dress is lovely, perhaps put on a belt to give it a bit of shape as it is too big, but a belt will do it. Also wear it with sneakers, and dress it up with some jewelry. Remember its about styling the clothes, not just wearing it. The dungarees (hopefully that's what you call them), YES QUEEN!!! Just wear different shirts for different occasions and your are good to go. You got this! We believe in you.

Pregnant with my 4th kid, was finally getting back to a size/shape I was comfortable with. Was finally getting back to fit in my clothes (I make a lot myself). Being able to explore more self-expression. And I cried at the idea of buying maternity clothes again. I'm small, but my bump is always far FAR bigger than maternity clothes allow for. So I always look awful. Last time I brought some long (Mid-calf) expensive dresses and they still ended up flashing my panties by the 3rd trimester because bump is just HUGE. And I am short, which somehow makes it much worse. This video made me feel so understood, honestly? Clothes are awful. I'm autistic, too, and it adds so much more difficulty to it. Urgh. I hope you find something that makes you happy soon. ❤️ You're wonderful.

Thank you for sharing the reframing work you’re doing to help your brain. Reframing things on the fly (from “Those clothes didn’t look how they should have” to “those clothes didnt look how i thought they should have”) is a very important and healing and hard to do shift. Its inspiring to be reminded we can adjust things as they happen and we can learn over time how to reframe the way we think about ourselves

You did so good! You were positive during shopping! I personally hate trying on clothes but ive noticed just trying them on at the store is better for me than having to get out twice to go to the same store. Especially just to take things back instead of leaving with a reward

Elyse, thank you for sharing such a vulnerable topic. We want you to know that this is such a common issue when it comes to shopping/choosing an outfit. We define style as "the way in which," meaning style is how you do everything in your life. You my friend, have style! Everyone does! For some, learning the tools of how to express it and connecting it with who you are make all the difference. We have helped so many women who hate shopping and feel distressed in this area find freedom in their closet. It's 100% possible! ❤

1) Love you and your authenticity so much! 2) My body has changed drastically over the past couple years due to medication. I hated growing out of my clothes! But giving myself permission to buy things that I like (and that fit) has been a game changer. 3) Neutral is it!! I've said it before and I'll say it again, sometimes I want to look cute and other times I'm not sure why it matters what I wear so long as I don't get arrested when I go out in public. 4) I too had an aversion to Old Navy (the place with flip flops and matching 4th of July shirts) but it has become a staple for comfy and not too pricey work clothes. The range of sizes is so freaking great.
