a lot of eastern european accents are very similar, as are our languages. german and french are distinguishable because of how different they are and their prominence in media. not a lot of people know what a croatian sounds like as opposed to a ukrainian. this is coming from a ukrainian

Someone sigma Chad male-d me about my accent once. I was born and raised in Colorado, only other place I've lived is California, yet this guy kept fucking insisting I had an accent from somewhere in northern Europe. Then he switched to "well you use weird big words, so that's why you sound foreign". Bro, I've got a slight stutter and a big vocabulary, how is that an accent?? Also I live with a Scotsman and i like to think I'm great at understanding Scottish accents but I'll be honest, about every tenth sentence I just completely fail to understand. And this is a man I've known for most of my life and lived with for years.

That's super weird to me because I think German accents are very distinctive. I didn't get "Spanish" from the Spanish guy, but it might just be because I mostly hear Mexican Spanish? I legit thought he might be Israeli at one point. I'm Canadian, so I can generally tell when people are French and specifically if they're Quebecois or from France.

I think that people from the UK are generally exposed to more accents that you would consider relevant than people in the West are. Like, I'd say Americans can probably tell regional American accents apart better than they could pinpoint out accents from different countries. But I think we have to remember that the U.S. is like 40 times bigger than the U.K. Someone from the U.K. is exposed to like Scottish, Irish, Welsh, and a myriad of English dialects (not to mention that England as a big dick colonial superpower has spread its accent everywhere, it gives you a more nuanced ear to tell apart other accents like Australian, South African, New Zealand). Meanwhile the average American is exposed to like, more Americans.

I got the Romanian and Filipino, though mostly because the Romanian guy mentioned there being a stigma around his ethnic group, and the Filipino guy because that's the only place I know that's in Asia but people have Latin-based names. Lol, my thoughts on the South African accent is the same. All the time I'm like "it's the one that sounds like a UK accent but unfamiliar".

i'm from scotland and what jordan said at the beginning is so true. like scots can say literally anything and north americans will be like "was that even english???" like dude, i'm not even speaking scots, i'm just speaking scottish english. and even someone without a strong accent (I so understand how people have a hard time with glasgow and aberdeen), people will just refuse to try and understand you lol. i moved to canada as a kid, and i got singled out and told i was saying things wrong so often that i started faking a canadian accent almost immediately. but even at 24, my natural accent is still scottish, just a bit more muted than most glaswegians
