I remember in a past video Matt said when he bought the shop, Ed had a trailer on it and the owner just recommended Matt evict him because he was "difficult to deal with." Instead Matt befriended him, put him on the crew, and is building him a place to live. It speaks to the quality of Matt's character.

Camera Advice from a Videographer: -Use 30fps on the mirrorless sony camera so it matches the gopros -use 60 or 120 fps only for slow motion shots. Using 60 and 120 frames on a timeline set to 30 fps gives you extra frames to slow down your footage - turn off IBS (in body stabilization) if you’re going to use a gimbal i know it sounds like it would help but it doesn’t it’s gives you that warp effect. - wider lenses make it easier to pull focus along with shooting at f4-f8 i would suggest a 16-35mm and a 24-70mm lens for your application the - shooting handheld with ibs on can be more pleasing for most because it gives a since of involvement. Just my tips other could say otherwise but you guys are killing it love the channel. Happy new year 🎉

Man, it feels good to see elders being respected and supported with such energy and effort. Wonderful team and community spirit. That wrecker is going to be so much fun to watch work the kinks out. The new camera's auto-focus really struggles when the scene has multi-depth of field choices which this episode had. Some kinks to work out with that in the shop setting but I think during recoveries it will really shine. Amazing content as always.

Hi, first comment from me, but here’s a cracking rough idea for a finnishing video for the wrecker, similar to the Morvair and the ”auto home” skits you did! Starts with the wrecker missing from the shop, zoom out google earth style, zoom in to the desert, the wrecker is driving semingly by it self towards a wreck. It stops, snaps out the winch (green suit style) and snaps off the last missing part from the wreck (whatever that could be, a bumper or something?) it snaps it into place on it self and then snaps out the welder and welds the part in place by it self, again green suit style. Cut to the front of the wrecker, wrecker goes vrom vrom, and shoots off into the sunset to save a Razor or something. Greetings from a snowy Sweden, lots of ad hoc snow rescues here and I’ve used a lot of the knowledge I’ve gained from you guys!😅

I use a center punch first and then drill a smaller pilot hole first. Then using lite pressure allow the hole saw to get established enough and then add more pressure. This is especially important on uneven surfaces like fire walls. The little extra time saves a lot of time and trouble.

Hey Morr team! Long time viewer and photographer here, my 2 cents about the new camera: dslr's are great but are more to handle, and gopros are great at run and gun type shooting. Gopros are also easy because everything is in focus most of the time and they typically do a decent job with shots with high dynamic range. If you want to use your dslr for run and gun type shots I would recommend that you shoot wide 17-24mm for example and then test out different image stabilization methods and see which ones work best (sometimes stabilizing in post is better than in camera or vice versa). Nice gimbals can be heavy but they do their job well. Keep that f-stop around 8 or even 12 and higher so that you dont have to pull focus as much. Save those fast aperture configs for static close up shots. I'd also shoot at 60fps or higher, you can always cut frames in post. 24 frames is too low for what yall film but thats just my opinion! We had a blizzard this week in the city I live in and I got to pull someone out of a snowbank with my Matt's straps and my '95 XJ. I was pretty excited about it! Was wishing I had a soft shackle and a rope instead but I got the job done with the tools I had. Couldn't have done it if I hadn't been watching you guys for years, I've learned so much. So Matt, I'm pretty much addicted to your channel from Australia and don't miss too much. I'm really enjoying the Off Road Wrecker build and particularly the engineering going into it. What has been concerning me for some months now is how are you planning on finishing all that raw, untreated steel. I do a lot of fabrication down under and our weather conditions are nowhere near as extreme as yours, yet I certainly wouldn't leave a trailer frame or vehicle chassis uncoated as it will rust before my eyes. You have now started final assembly of the wrecker, and there isnt a spec or primer, paint, powdercoat ar galvanizing anywhere near it. Would it not have been a good thing to finish the build, cart it all away to a semi trailer manufacturing company that has a massive hot dip galvanizing tub, and then bring it home and assemble it all onto a beautifully coated structure?

Happy New Year! Just a review on the new camera. It's very cinematic, however, it was really hard to watch this video due to the eye strain from the constant changing of the camera focus. Too many clips of zoom in to zoom out and rapid side to side movement in full zoom. The camera also struggles with depth of field which causes it to constantly focus. I felt like I had to take some dramamine after this video. It does work for B-roll footage. The nice thing about the GoPro video is that it doesn't constantly change focus. I probably notice this more since I'm watching your videos on a larger screen, not on my phone. Just my $.02. Looking forward to what you produce in 2023!

Yessssssssss - I've been loving the down n dirty gopro style but buying a Sony was the best thing you guys could have done to up your production quality. If I could suggest anything, I'd love to see a mix between GoPro footage and then using the Sony for shots that look particularly interesting. The GoPro is really hard to beat for showing the full shop environment, general interactions, but the Sony is gonna be your best friend for close ups, detail shots and 1on1 talking The big thing you'll notice is that you'll have less issues in editing with poor focusing and stabilisation being a little distracting, the GoPro just does that better than a Sony ever could. Also, the GoPro footage is way quicker to work with than the Sony!

@@toddwilliams5905 That's funny and correct. It was mentioned in a video about a year ago that Matt became Ed's landlord when he bought the property now Matt, in reality, pays Ed to live there. He treats him like an elderly father and takes good care of him. Ed is so interesting and adds much to the channel's content. There is no end to his life's adventures and great stories. I couldn't believe last week's video, I think it was his birthday, and he had just got back from scuba diving and dredging for gold for 4 hours under water. I would never have imagined Ed at 85 could still do that since I've seen him have to sit and catch his breath a few times during a recovery. He stays busy and that is why he is in good shape for his age. His mind is good and has a great memory. He's just a cool and interesting old fart that's great to have around. I'm sure we will be seeing more of him since he's moving into the shop. Who knows he might have a few lady friends around, that he parties with, to add even more interesting characters to the channel.

You should have Premier Power Welders come out and do a video about high frequency DC welding - there's so little information out there about the process, even though some sources say it's used everyday in steel production
@Lucas12v
@Lucas12v Жыл бұрын
Is it just high frequency pulse dc? I don't see how you can have real high frequency with direct current.
@Patrick.Weightman
@Patrick.Weightman Жыл бұрын
@@Lucas12v DC can still have variations in current which is what it's entirely reliant on; DC just means the current is moving in one direction, nothing more. At any rate the most I've been able to gather from it, which is incredibly vague, is that: HFDC is done by manipulating DC output in a very specific way so that the current begins to produce controllable fluctuations/variations in a manner very similar to AC, yet much faster and still flowing in a single direction - in turn this agitates your puddle to help impurities rise, gives you deeper penetration and allows for both longer and shorter arcs than conventional SMAW. These variations happen around 20,000 times a second or more That's about the long and skinny of everything that's (readily) available in regards to it. HFDC apparently has major industrial uses with tubular steel production, but for the civilian market there's only been 2 or 3 people over the decades that have bothered to tap into it - all of which are oddly secretive about how their systems actually operate, such as what these fluctuations/variations are, how they're imposed, etc. The term "high frequency" seems like a bit of a misnomer, but I could be wrong in that aspect; I really wish I knew. Either way it's definitely not your average DC welder, even just the sound can tell you that - instead of the regular bacon sizzle, the stick will produce a fractal whistle very similar to a "falling shepard's tone" as it carries the arc
@Lucas12v
@Lucas12v Жыл бұрын
@@Patrick.Weightman Sounds the same or similar to high frequency pulse like what's sometimes used with dc tig. I'm not sure what the benefits would be but Rory (from moab motorsports) is a very good stick welder so if he likes it, there's probably something to it.

Some advise for drilling with a hole saw bit for everyone. Use a large fender washer when drilling the pilot hole. When your pilot bit punches through the hole saw will hit the fender washer and spin saving your pilot bit from the twist when the hole saw makes contact. Electrician here, I've drilled many holes in panels and boxes. A old timer showed me this trick.

@Slider68

I don't know if someone else has mentioned this but u-joints don't provide constant rotation velocity throughout each rotation if there is an angle between the shafts. The way a typical driveshaft works around this is there are two u-joints and the shafts at the very ends are parallel to each other, plus the u-joints are clocked so each end of the center section is aligned together. This way the varying rpm cancels out so the output from say a transmission is constant with the differential's pinion gear. The fact that the driveshaft rotation velocity (rpm) keeps rapidly speeding up and slowing down doesn't create much vibration so it is an acceptable solution for the price (u-joints are cheaper than CV joints). You'll notice though that modern cars tend to use CV joints because the constant shaft rpm produces a quieter vehicle with less vibration. The way the wrecker's steering is currently setup, the input (steering shaft) and output (steering box input shaft) are not parallel to each other. What will happen is as the steering wheel is turned, the steering box's input shaft will speed up and slow down as the steering wheel is rotated at a constant rotation speed (rpm). Unless the u-joint angles are carefully optimized, this will result in very odd "feeling" steering. As the steering wheel is turned, the steering angle at the wheels will speed up and slow down. There are really 3 options to fix this: 1. Install a CV (constant velocity) joint instead of a u-joint anywhere the u-joint angle is significant (at the steering box u-joint at least). 2. Mount the steering box so its input shaft is parallel to the steering column. 3. Carefully calculate the variation in rotation rpm (velocity) and set it up so when the steering is on center the front wheel angle changes the slowest.
