As an African watching this, I can say even though you're American, this is so African. In most African societies and cultures, it's not a visit if it's not a surprise. Africans love surprise visits from relatives. It offers occasions for celebration and more joy. When an African relative offers advance notice that they are visiting, you worry that maybe something has happened, that there may be a family problem they wish to discuss.
@NimonaRocks

Heartwarming and adorable. I’m sure you speak with them often even though you’re in Japan. I’m in Japan as well military wife. I don’t think you’re selfish but protective of your mental health. I haven’t live home since 09’., when we were stationed there but I do visit, or they would come where we are to visit for a weekend. Living near family can be overwhelming when everyone is pulling you in different directions. It causes me anxiety and a feeling of anxiousness, so going on my own time and living states over is good for mental wellbeing .

100% this! I talk to them very often, but we don't show affection so much...which I'm learning is not normal....? 😅 Yes, when I'm back home everyone is very dependent on each other, so much so I can't think. There are so many distractions. I have learned I have to prioritize my mental health, like you said.

When I’d go home as a surprise, it always bugged my mother no end that my granny with dementia would immediately recognise me and start talking appropriately as if we were in the middle of a conversation and I’d just stepped out of the room for a moment. Meanwhile, my mother was dealing with granny day to day and didn’t enjoy such lucid conversations.

I can't believe the rest of your family doesn't recognize you but then again if they think you are far away then they aren't expecting you. Thank you! :) Now that it's the end of the year, I'm off from my two job and finally have more time for videos -- so, I'm doing much better! Please take care too.

Only come across this video today. it's such a lovely video. The uncles' Japanese greeting was great. I'm glad you saw your family. I'll try to catch up with your latest stuff when I can. Much love from the UK.
