When I cut up the old frame from my 1956 Jeep CJ-5, I set aside the front clip with the thought it might make a cool bead roller. I'm at the point where I need to make new rear floor pans for the Jeep, so I finally got around to making the bead roller.
I used Anchor Lube in this video and I'm excited they're now a supporter of the channel. Check out their product here:

That's not just a bead roller, it's functional art! Thank you for sharing these videos. I don't know any other maker that is as willing to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in like you do, not letting setbacks get you down, pushing on and getting things done. I wish I had even 1/10th of that particular superpower. And of course - all that is made more difficult by the fact that you often using very very second-hand materials. I know from experience that this makes the work take something like 3 times longer. And to top it all off you're filming it all.. So yes - very inspiring. Basically, I have no idea how you get so much done. Keep up the excellent work mate!

Always enjoy watching you create tools out of junk. Necessity is the mother of invention and all that. Really impressive how you just get stuck in and happily show the mistakes and issues along the way. Kudos to you mate.

Brilliant video Jeremy. Thanks. I really liked that you showed those first attempts on panels. Look forward to seeing as your skills with it develop. Nice one.

Hi Jeremy, as a fellow home fabricator I can really appreciate the amount of work you got through in this video. Your willingness to “just try it” is inspiring as I don’t like redoing things so I find it frustrating when it doesn’t work the first or second time. Taking so much time to make the equipment you need can also be a difficult choice because most people just want to get on with the project at hand and see any holdup as frustrating. I admire your patience, skill and vision in seeing things most people miss. Spotting a potential bead roller in an old rusty chassis was brilliant. Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺

The YT channel Make it Kustom has lots of info on how to work sheet metal. While I have limited sheet metal knowledge. From what I do know and see he knows what he is talking about. Has lots of info on how to do beads like that and get the buckling out. The bead roller looks like it works well. Makes me want to use a old scrap bumper I have to make one.

I’ve learned probably 90% of what know about sheetmetal from his channel. There’s a good reason my bead roller is a somewhat similar design to his.

I love the use of scrap in your builds. It sure doesn't make the build easier or quicker, but for some reason it is just so much cooler. I know nothing of bead rolling, but it looks like you may need an oxy torch and some heat shrinking on those panels. Thanks for another great video.

You are probably one of the few creators (if not the only) that would ever have the perseverance and mental fortitude to take the old rusty unusable steel frame members of their project vehicle, to make a very specialized piece of automotive panel forming equipment, all to re-create the historically correct feel for that very same project vehicle. I’ve seen many other machinist videos attempt to follow a similar path embracing the ideals of flexible ingenuity and creative execution all while limited to what you already have on hand. (like junk yard wars w/o a prize) They begin enthusiastically trying to slap things together using their years of experience & skills building the project piece by piece essentially on the fly … and inevitably they keep encountering the same issue over and over. Having to modify almost every single additional piece to work within the existing constraints dictated by the repurposed foundation they started with. Realizing that accomplishing an ideal final product may now be impossible coupled with some exponential figure more time/complexity/effort just to complete, a final product that would likely be levels more inferior to a purchased one let alone even function as intended at all, combined with beginning to question the sanity of pushing forward, eventually leads to the inevitable decision … 🤬 “F*** This!” Followed by them scraping what they started and happily spending their hard earned money for some proper standard starting materials. Seeing you push your project through to completion and obtaining some decently usable and repeatable results is no small achievement and one that deserves some serious recognition. While not perfect you created a functional piece of equipment that will quickly make apparent what worked well & what you liked as well as what improvements or features you’d want if you ever upgraded it or purchased one in the future. Your approach to machining does true justice to all backyard hobbyists while your inquisitive nature and desire to improve your skill sets has led to the somewhat comical approach of throwing caution to the wind: “This ain’t no historical restoration, it’s an EV Customization - Celebrating the iconic vintage CJ Style”. (paraphrased) Don’t like what I’m doing? Then you can pull your own dang jeep from the woods and cut/burn/torch/weld/bend/hammer/fix and replace to your hearts content. If that isn’t rewarding enough then don’t forget to video and edit the entire process into an acceptable time frame all to share with complete strangers who are dying to point out everything you didn’t do perfect or to their own subjective standards/preferences. (slightly more accurate paraphrasing … again just slightly)

Ive had the best out come with combating the twist and pop by doing my lay out on both sides of the panel. Run you profile on the opposite side. Not full depth but a maybe 1/4 depth no real measure. But when you flip it and run over it the panel flattens outs pretty good. Might work for you , its worked for me. One other tool you can make to aid you restoration, a shrinking disk for your grinder.

It’s funny, It seems obvious to me to do it that way to save wear on the fancy cutter (especially if it’s a single point cutter), but in all the hobby shop gear tutorials I’ve seen, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone do it that way.

Amazing Job 👏 You always do amazing things with stuff we'd haul to the crusher, gotta admit that when you first started project, had some skeptical thoughts but then you dud your magic 🎩 and danged if there was a bead roller!!! Keep on trying, build some more dies, perfect the machine you crafted and don't let anyone tell you that you can not do something if your mind to it!!!👏👏👏👏

The original jeep panels as well as commercial replacement panels are stamped. Could you make dies and a press to stamp out your needed panels? Stamping should cut down on the warpage. I love watching the work you're doing and can't wait to see how it all turns out.

You should not use bushings for the axles in a bead roller... instead use ball bearings as they can better cope with the angle changes as you adjust for different settings.

Jeremy, nice DIY bead roller. I really like that you used parts of your Jeep to make it. A couple of questions: What does your Anchor Lube smell like during a cut? & What brand & model is your MIG welder or what specs are needed to do the work you're doing on your Jeep? My CJ-2A needs pretty much exactly the same kinds of repair as your CJ-5, but on a fixed income I can't afford to spend a lot on a "higher-end" welder.

The anchor lube is a very low odor (one of the things I like about it). It really doesn’t smell like much of anything. My welder is a hand-me-down Lincoln 170T.
