with virtual desktop and quest 3 its surprisingly great. I keep trying to compute with it but most of the time I'm using it to watch streaming services. You really get a glimpse into where things are going though. Its wild to me that a $500 headset, a $20 piece of software and whatever computer you currently have is all you need to start experimenting. You can even make screens bigger than your physical room which is weird in passthrough where you still see the room too. Rokid is perhaps the dumbest way to do it with a 1080p floating fixed image in front of you at all times especially given its price. You might as well get a Quest3 and have all the other benefits of spatially tracked mixed reality.

I definitely see the problem with webcam calls and more “distance” to the computer if you’re not already wearing the glasses. First thought that popped into my mind when watching this, was that Vision Pro will probably not replace all your displays, but that you can probably get by with a smaller and simpler screen for video calls and notifications. That said, when it comes to notifications the Vision Pro does have an external display too. Could that display system notifications, progress bars or other useful info when you are not wearing it? Will probably not reduce the distance as much as a proper monitor, but could still give you visual feedback that the system is still active and working, without wearing the headset. Also I worry that the Vision Pro is a lot heavier than this. Meaning it will be a lot less feasible doing an entire work day in AR/VR/XR.

I don't think this would bring it back because like he said in the video, not having a monitor at all is a barrier. So at the end of the day, laptop and desktop from factors still win. It's either that, or 100% of the computing is done on the headset itself.

One thing you could do to make this even more portable, more wearable like the Vision Pro, is to ditch the MacBook's chassis altogether -- you could 3D print an enclosure that skips the keyboard, and just has the motherboard, cooling, and battery sandwiched into a small box [or make a hard cover, or leave the top hinge and casing on, so you can close it in a bag and not press keys]. You can get one of those tiny pocket keyboard/trackpad combo units so you can use it anywhere; full size wireless keyboard and mouse or touchpad for regular use, and the box can strap to your belt or back or go into a backpack. Plus you can get one of those high-wattage high-capacity battery banks to keep the setup powered for even longer.

Really the best use of something like this, is to think of them like air pods for your eyes. If you could use your iPhone with this, it would be a perfect use case. Keep the compute module in your pocket and just slip on some glasses to interact with it, or if you don't want to mess with it, just pull the phone out of your pocket and look at the screen. The idea I could be privately watching a movie while riding a train, or seeing a maps overlay on the sidewalk as I navigate a city is appealing. Of course, this could get a bit dystopian, where you could see everyone's tinder profile floating above their heads as you walk about.

Having AR/VR with just the display pieces that looks like regular sun glasses is where it should be with an external gpu doing the processing. The only reason they are now much bulkier is because companies that make it decided they needed to integrate the gpu into the headset, which is wrong. Only if it needs to be portable is that required. But if not, it should be no bigger then a pair of sun glasses. And when it is the same size as a pair of sun glasses, and the screen projected in front of you doesn't move when you move your head, then it will take off I think.

From this short "skit", I think the most valuable thing I saw was that his posture was better. Because the "screen" is in the upper vision area, he was not looking down like you would on your phone or laptop screen. When you have a good desktop setup, you should always have the monitor in an appropriate location, but laptops rarely do. By moving your monitor to your upper vision area, even this "laptop" is a better work enrvironment IMO.

I made a headless MacBook Pro sort of don't have any goggles yet but I have thought about the concept. Wondered if I would like it. Wouldn't be useful for most things but occasionally I think it would find use. I used an old one of the earlier generations of unibody. I have that connected to a touchscreen and I use it to control my audio mixer stage right house left and then I have a handful of other devices a small GPD P3 for caring with me while I run around and fix problems and listen to the space and I have a windows tablet for a slightly bigger screen and a Windows convertible the swivel screen not the yoga for the times when I want something a little bit bigger and have a little bit more space at the venue. I also have one of those small form factor mini PCs for hooking up to a 15 inch touchscreen when I do have a nice table to work from. Took me a while to find a compatible touchscreen monitor but I like the experience on the Mac although it doesn't support multitouch. It's also running the older version of Mac OS X when things used to be in a reasonable way out although it still has the stupid full screen green button bug you know when they changed it from being a maximize function to the un-tasking full screen mode.

The input aspects is entirely different.. I assume Apple don't want people to use mouse when using vision pro (even though they could). From the demos it'll be more like interacting with spatial hologram, Iron Man style. And current apps might need redesign to support pinch input, like ipad apps is different with mac apps. Tough they seem to support opening mac apps in visionOS, like you can use ipad to extend macbook screen. And though tactile feel of keyboard couldn't be replaced, they might push people to use voice instead.

The single 4K screen from the Mac was the #1 issue I noticed when the Vision Pro was unveiled. If Apple was able to expand this to allow either using any MacOS app as a separate window, or expand the casted screen from 4K 16:9 to say 5120x2160 21:9 that would already help a lot. iOS apps + single screen is just a shitty, subpar solution.

Love this! Would be keen to see how this works with a Quest 3 powered by Virtual Desktop running on the headless machine instead of clunky glasses

Even better, Virtual Desktop has an OS X client so you could use this same setup

@@Wenpen I mean arguably its similar to the Apple vision - it also let's you freely position multiple windows - it's a far more accurate comparison

@@WenpenThe Vision Pro is probably going to be of a similar weight, if not heavier, than the Quest 3.

Should have used the Xreal air, it's the same formfactor, but it enables multiple monitor and head "tracking" so your monitors stay in place even when you look around elsewhere

We didn't get the latest Xreal Air 2 until after the week was shot. But we tried it with the Beam add-on and when you anchor the display in space, there's a very visible motion blur when you move your head. It made Lloyd feel sick.
@TheSkyeFyre
@TheSkyeFyre 5 ай бұрын
The Air 2 is a very marginal upgrade to the Air 1, and the Beam just sucks and isn't even applicable for the use case in the video. All you'd need is the Air 1 glasses, the MacBook and the Nebula software for virtual triple screen on the Airs. Thanks for looking into the possibility of using these glasses as a proper display replacement! It's a super cool niche of a product segment.

I’m wondering why they didn’t use the quest 3 with a app like immersed. It’d still be under 1000 and more like the Vision Pro

why didn't you use Xreal air and you can have up to 3 virtual screen or wide screens and Lock position of it ...? (with Nebula app )

Usually these types of glasses or headsets don't cause motion sickness, they are more open and made for everybody . VR when you are sealed off from reality and can't perceive your surroundings, that gives people nausea and motion sickness.

The biggest issue for me with these kinds of setups is the screen always following you, which the Vision Pro seems to fix - it appears to be anchored in the world like a real screen
