Wait til Curls finds out what they call Paekakariki lol Oh and Curls - when you go to a place with Bay or Beach etc in the name - find the bloody water mate! It's usually the bit they do up the best. Might even be an icecream shop.

You went the long way to the skate park too! The skate park was just cleared of its graffiti (character) by the local council. The reason the ice cream sign sent you over the bridge is because that sleepy road you could have crossed to get to it was very recently state highway 1 and you would take your life in your hands trying to cross it. Very cool to see you came to visit our wee village

Pukerua Bay is where Peter Jackson grew up and lived until he was 26. Why didn't you visit the Kapiti escarpment? it's a proper walk which begins in Pukerua, takes in an amazing view of Kapiti island, and comes back down to Paekakariki through an abandoned train station, There is also a lizard garden and the site of an old Māori settlement.
@rickh3714 Жыл бұрын
He admitted that he blundered into 'Puke' and that it wasn't really planned or anything. I imagine the lizard garden relates to the Pukeroa Bay's v.rare Whitakers (?) skinks?

A walk over the overpass to the other side and back where you started! And sorry about the rain and wind, we’ve had a bad run of storms and it’s meant to be summer and swimming at the beach. I do hope you get a swim somewhere. Keep us informed of your travels around our beautiful country, New Zealand, Aotearoa. Keep safe! ❤

I dunno if you've walked the escarpment from Pukerua Bay to Paekākāriki, but it is well worth a second trip to do so! (And you can have an ice-cream at both ends of the walk...)
@beckyluck3086 Жыл бұрын
Worth a trip back for the walk along the beach. The goat track will take you there. The houses to the north are only accessible by a path along the beach. The council often have to come to clear the storm debris of the path so the residents can reach their homes. The last house has a helicopter parked next to it in a space no bigger than a regular car park. 😊

It's a shame you didn't get to the Camborne Walkway near Mana. On a blue sky day, that is gorgeous to walk end to end, and it has quirky boat sheds and an inlet beach nearby. If you do, choose a mid-tide time so you can walk the beach and there is enough water to look great. I often see fishing jumping there and dog walkers love it. Nearby, just around the inlet, we have the awesome Pauatahanui Nature Reserve (no dogs allowed). It has several viewing huts, lovely but humble pathways to walk, and birds in their natural safe environment. The cinema is really charming too, and has a great cafe. The relatively new pathway running from Pauatahanui around a lot of the inlet is a nice walk too, and basically connects to the Camborne Walkway. In fine weather, these places can be enchanting. Whitby is also a nice residential area unusually planned with dog walker pathways in mind. I once read that it has the highest concentration of dogs in NZ. Thanks for your video. I enjoyed it. Pukerua isn't epic, but it has a quiet charm, especially the bay. Ngati Toa Domain, near Mana and linked to Camborne Walkway and Plimmerton by beach and pathway is also well worth a visit.

I'm a Kiwi and I have passed through there many times. I was expecting you to find a dedicated ice cream shop - one of those ones with 30 different flavours all with exotic names. A let down to find the signs were only referring to the dairy! TBH, it's hard to find real ice cream shops in NZ these days. Probably the best one I have seen recently is Duck Island in Hamilton East. If you are passing through you MUST stop in and try some of their flavours. They are amazing.

Lived in PKB back in the seventies and later for a while in the nineties. That overbridge came from down Porirua and was the access across the main road to the railway station and Porirua city. It was chopped down and relocated at PKB when the motorway was redesigned at the Porirua intersection. Should have gone down to the beach via the 'Goat Track'. It definitely has become laid back since the completion of Transmission Gully. Notice you reverse your images in part?
@davidthorne7712 Жыл бұрын
It’s a much more pleasant place since March 2022, that’s when Transmission Gully Motorway opened and took the majority of the traffic away from the main road The escarpment track is a great walk but not as pleasant on gusty Westerly wind day

Aw man that was hilarious. I love the fact that you walked half a kilometre just to end up back at that dairy that sells ice creams. And the comments you made re just when you think you're on a public footpath you're walking into someones house, I've been living in NZ for around 30years, when out walking around a new place I've eventually realised I've done the same thing 😆 You've got a new sub. As someone who has travelled around the country fairly extensively (including around Pukerua Bay and pretty much all of the settlements around that area) I'm intriged to see where you end up next and what you make of the place. Oh and also, the way you're pronouncing words in Te Reo is fantastic. I don't know how you learnt to pronounce the words correctly but on behalf of us kiwis that actually make the effort to say those word properly THANK YOU, you're setting a great example.

When I saw that sign I immediately thought: "That's where you came from ,you nong" The alternative is a rather unofficial looking sign indicating a rather dubious "ice-cream" and public toilet connection and that does not bear thinking about. In the early 60's my mum fell asleep on the train from the city back to Tawa and woke up in Pukerua bay. It was the last train ,so she had to call my dad to drive up and collect us.

I wonder what happened to the piano/organ/juke box museum that used to be in Pukerua Bay. Travelling north there was a side road off to the right, went down to this museum. We once came upon it when travelling back to PNth, there happened to be a group of vehicle vehicle enthusiasts (forget what vehicles but they were English ones) visiting this museum, it was almost closing time but the owner let the 2 of us roam around insie looking at his piano roll pianos, juke boxes and all sorts of other musical machines.
