Hi Curls, followed you for years. In fact the first NZ territory to see the rising of the Sun is the amazing Chatham Islands. Definitely recommend it! Would be right up your alley. Fantastic hosts by the way to. Cheers & Best Tony

Actually, Gisborne has claimed to be the first city (not just a place) on Earth to see the sunrise each day. However, this is only true during New Zealand's summer months, due to Samoa and Tokelau's dateline shift in December 2011.

Actually it is the Chatham Islands (Rekohu) that are first, specifically Pitt Island. Also because of the angle of the sunrise in summer, NE to SW, the whole east coast of NZ, North and South Islands get the sunrise at the same time. Dunedin sees the sunrise on 1st January at exactly the same time as Gisborne. The highest point along that line is the very first on mainland Aotearoa. That happens to be Mt Tapueanuku in the Kaikoura mountains in the South Island. That was recognised about 20-30 years ago actually by a Gisborne businessman.

A bit off beam, Curls. You need to go somewhat northeast to East Cape or Mt Hikurangi to see the first sun of each day in Aotearoa mainland. Actually, to be really correct you need to go WAAAY north-east to Millenium /Caroline Island (which is part of the country) to see the first sun in the world. That's a few thousand km from Gisborne!!! 🙂🙂

Only in the summer months, between Nov - Jan and it's actually the Chatham islands. NZ's claim to fame is that it is 1st country to see the NEW YEARS DAY. Officially Kiribati Islands is internationally recognized as the 1st country in the world to see the new day! ( got to let them have it, they not known for anything else) 2nd is Russia Because of the difference in the latitudes, different countries see the sunrise first depending on the time of the year. The countries where the sun rises first in the world are: Kiribati (Kiritimati) - September 27 to November 13 / January 31 to May 15 (153 days) Russia (Kamchatka area) - May 16 to September 26 (134 days) New Zealand (Chatham Island) - November 14 to January 30 (78 days)

Rekohu / Wharekauri / Chatham Islands for the first sun in NZ. I think one of the Pacific Islands (Kiribati?) is the first to see the new day.

The international timeline is the 180th meridian. New Zealand isn’t the first country to see the sunrise. I believe the island of Tuvalu at 179 degrees 5.1 East meridian should have that status.

Sorry Curls but Gisborne is no longer the first place to see the sun, that would be Kiribati which extended the line east in 1995 to keep the same time throughout the country, which previously fell on both sides of the international date line. But it is still the first city to see the new day sun. That bird sounded like a bellbird, or korimako, also called a makomako in some areas.

There is a island just outside of N.Z. that gets the sun 1st. I think it is called Chatham Island. But in N.Z. Mt Hikurangi is the 1st part of N.Z. that sees the sun first. I was in Gisbourne in April 24' it looked like, the houses never saw a lick of paint since the 1970's. I wasn't liking the rainbow crossing. I felt violated. It should have been outlawed. The red crossing, if it is raised, cars by law have to stop. If it is flat, it will only be a coutesy for them to stop. Mate, that was the 3rd city i been to, that you showed up to in 18 months that i was there.

Red crossings are courtesy crossings. Cars don't have to stop like they do for zebra crossings so it's a bit bold to just bowl out onto one. We have them in Napier as well.

The first place to see the sun on earth before New Zealand is Tonga in the furthest eastern part of Nukualofa. Also Samoa will see if before them too!! do some research and you will see. The Islands get written off since its not as big as NZ in terms of the avg persons geographical knowledge.
