The latex project that took me more than 8 months to finish!
In this video we craft a latex catsuit inspired by the character Rei Ayanami from the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. We will be crafting with black, white, and orange latex and creating Rei's armor pieces and other accessories from EVA foam.

The video got a copyright strike for the music clip used in the end so I had to replace it with a track provided by YT. Unfortunately this erased the whole conclusion at the end. You should be able to see what was said if you turn on your subtitles. Apologies!

I think it should get a strike for over-use of vocal fry and ridiculous intonation of certain words as if it were emphasis and not sounding like you're unsure or asking a question. Incredibly hard to listen to... couldn't has very long watching this.

That's a really cool project! My mom was a master seamstress and would make all sorts of things. I can remember waiting around as a kid as she would do measurements and create patterns. You casually note your mistakes, but it brings back memories of her shouting "Damn it!" when she'd make a mistake on clothes for reenactors. I regret that I didn't learn any of that from her.

I'm in a similar boat. My grandmother made a few Halloween costumes for me when I was a kid and now that I'm getting into Cosplay I really regret not taking the opportunity to learn from her when I had the chance, and I'm sure she would have loved spending more time with me to pass on her knowledge.

I have always been amazed at the quality of some cosplayers. It's not simply that they look good in the costumes, but that they make them from scratch. As someone who has dealt with costuming quite a bit in the past, the attention to detail and dedication are very impressive.

I have a small recommendation: if you cut slits for zippers, first punch on the ends a hole and then cut the slit, it will prevent the slits from ripping. This actually also exist in machinery, you never cut square corners because rounded ones are more stable and sturdy and less likely to tear or break. As always, i really love your work and you inspire me to make my own Latexcrafting.

For the zipper - once you dry position the zipper & cut-out, make regular chalk marks across the zipper and latex. This will then help you ensure the final result stays lined up. You can use the same technique for any seams.

It's interesting in the Chinese sense! Must have patience! I made a catsuit for a gf and think it took about 12 versions before we were both happy with it. It's both forgiving and unforgiving. We went from thinking there'd be enough on the rolls to make a few projects to nearly running out. It's stretchy, so it'll be easy, we thought! Then many attempts to get the seams neat, sags and wrinkles out and as she was going to dance in it, avoid wardrobe malfunctions. I think I'm going to try making one for myself, but also thinking a lifecast and a material that heat shrinks might be less stressful!

Great video! Tip to costume design. Marvelous Designer. I'm not affiliated to them in any way, but it's a very practical software to design costumes. Main focus for MD is probably not designing real clothes, but I know of a few cosplayers that do... Enabling them to make patterns digitally, and when satisfied, print out cut patterns with sow marks.

Wow, what a technical project! I never appreciated just how thin latex is in fashion, it really is much like a thick-walled balloon. What a pain, I imagine the shelf life of such a suit is quite limited, trying it on years later, causing it to split wide open. A ton of work for such a temporary piece, and I'm sure it's also quite fragile.

The baggynes of the first suit is probably caused by adding extra seam allowance. Normally you make your draft around 5% smaller so it fits tightly. The way I do it, is by gluing the pieces without seam allowance, this way the piece is slightly smaller and sits tight and you don’t need to put the seam allowance on your pattern.

Nice tutorial! Looks like a lot of work, and too bad you had to do it twice! I would suggest using magnets to attach the armor pieces to your suit, pretty strong ones, it will help to ensure that the pieces are held in the exact place you want every time. As for the next outift, for orange jumpsuits, I'm thinking either Stellvia or Mezzo Forte?

This was based on a bodysuit I have succesfully made in the past but once you start splitting it into multiple pieces, it can change the fit if you are not careful with seam allowance. With the creasing problems would it make more sense to layer the pieces. For example the crotch and back might crease less and look more anime acurate if you designed it in at least two parts such as a leotard and leggings even if you attach them.

The wrinkling could be fixed by taking in parts that are not 5%-10% smaller than my actual body measurements are in that specific spot. And creating princess seams in areas where you would normally put darts when you are sewing tightly-fitting garments. It’s possible to make a catsuit that fits perfectly, it’s just very difficult and requires practice.

Thank you so much for this whole process video. Can you wear shape wear when taking your measurements as well as when wearing the suit, or do you have to be bare (only underwear) under latex?
@lacrymastory
@lacrymastory Жыл бұрын
Latex is pretty thin so the shape wear might be visible if worn underneath. You can take measurements with and without shape wear and see what the difference is. Then you can draft your latex pattern to take you in the same amount as the shape wear does but the results will vary depending on how stretchy your shape wear is compared to the latex etc.

You can buy liquid latex body paint. Instead of tailoring a catsuit from latex sheets, you could put on a sheer bodysuit and paint on the latex. Ignoring the fact that it would be tough to make a YT acceptable video from that, I dont think I've ever seen cosplay body suits made that way. Do you think that might give good results? It seems to me like it could be a much easier way to get most of the suit, only the fine details might be tough to paint on.

Rather than just create the whole thing from scratch, why don't just used readymade leotard and the rest just by glueing the suit design onto the leotard??? I mean this is what Spiderman does in designing his suit??? He purchased readymade diving suit then just modify it to suit his red and blue colors plus the webbing and the spider insignia.
