I feel the obvious limitations of the mantis blade is that this version is unpowered, which limits its reach, power, and stability, but that's a limitation of modern technology because bolting motors onto this thing in 2020 would make it unwieldly. However, the demo as seen in Kyle's video shows that the blades on this weapon are very, very sharp, which overcomes those limitations to an impressive degree. Awesome bladesmithing!
@LordBackuro2 жыл бұрын
I think it’s also partially because its realistically a little too big Now i get that she had to to use the lore accurate numbers for size But source material often varies from the in game design and to me it seems that the mantis blades in the actual source numbers are actually too big to actually be used and hide inside a hand. I think that if it was downsized it would be a LOT more useable and also have it easier to put in the complex mechanisms.

little idea to make this more accurate : since everytime this model of the mantis blade would be cuting anything that would be with a strong arm movement, you could make the blade itself retractable into the aluminium amr that is holding it, and with the right counter mass, it would extend it self when you want to cut or pierce something, and retract when you're finished, giving a more accurate version of the mantins blade we have in the game( which retracts fully when you don't want to strike with it)

I got a really nice 3D printed Mantis Blade with LEDs that came on an armband. Naturally after wearing for 30 minutes it fell off. I had thought about building a mount similar to this. But finding the right things without a workshop in Germany is a lil difficult. I know I could get things at Lowes or Home Depot and start putzing around with it. But here, finding the right pieces is hard. But this gives me additional ideas on how to achieve mounting it.

Well-done.. i do have a slight detail i want to mention. But it seems that in cyberpunk lore, the mantis blade length is to long to really hide it the forearm. But i thin you made the size ratio almost as in cyberpunk..so when not in use, they would be somewhat impractical. So a date night sound bit like. "Do u want to cuddle.... swoosh...ups"...
@dannyo66992 жыл бұрын
Coming up with the ability for both pivot points to actuate together, I immediately thought of a self-leveling feature on a loader tractor which is a second actuating point that allows a loader tractor bucket to remain level throughout the entire movement of the loader arms articulation.
@Lecherous_Rex3 жыл бұрын
I'd like to see the extension mechanism be driven by the grip with gears, so you can extend the blade independent from the swing. You could increase the force you can apply that way, rather than the blade's weight and momentum battling the force of the spring til the spring wins out. Crush force from your grip could overcome the return spring. From there you could either figure out something to cause them to lock up as to not apply all that force to your hands on impact or even set the leverage up to be greatly increased when extended. Squeezing two levers together in each hand could really drive some serious force, I'd love to see what that would do to some ballistic gel. After seeing the mantis blades work in game I figured the concept was that they were driven by the forearm muscles like a prosthetic hand. Not sure whether hydraulics would work for this, maybe thin narrow rams driven by motorcycle brake reservoir/levers?

Really interesting build. Now that you made one as close to the drawings and sculptures as you could, you should do another with a different design approach where you see just how practical & functional and usable you can get it. Scale down, articulation not quite parallel so that folded it tucks away very neatly and extended it's at a 20°-30° angle from your fore arm, hand grip squeeze to extend, etc.....

It's easy to cut, burrs usually aren't bad if there are any, but welding or bending is touchy. Wow, that thing is huge! If I had a personal version I'd want it about half the size (maybe even 1/3 or 1/4) and for it to extend out to be nearly straight. I wouldn't use it anything like a mantis, but that pose could be used when in transport mode so I can still use my hands without the blades being in my way. Thinking about it, if the two parts making up the hinge were further apart and the rear part shortened, I believe that would keep it raised while sat back in transport mode and to come forward to a near parallel position in relation to the arm brace (with a locking mechanism also). Functionality would be limited to stabbing as slashing motions would be clumsy at best when compared to a sword of any type would be better by far.

Another annoying thing about aluminum is unlike steel it can't really hold an edge as it's so soft BUT you can actually make "paper" like strips of it if you mill or turn a piece cutting about 1 thousandth of an inch off it. Kinda looks like disco earrings and has the texture and strength of tissue paper, you would never think it's metal if you didn't know what or where it came from. :P
