I've always loved playing racing video games, but I've never had a steering wheel. In this video I went all out by building myself a custom sim racing rig complete with a Logitech G29 steering wheel and pedals. Instead of using a screen I used an LG CineBeam projector which allows me to adjust the screen size and is REALLY immersive! I know this is a pretty goofy project but I had a ton of fun building this one, and I'm going to have a ton of fun playing with it :)

I highly recommend angling the bottom of your seat until your thigh can rest on the seat comfortably. If you run long times, you may develop some issues as you're basically holding the weight of your legs on your feet, hips, and lower back.

I would say just raising the seat would do good here because that steering wheel is crazy high and in his face

TBH I am pretty disappointed with how little effort they put into setting a comfortable ergonomic racing position from the start since they were setting all these metrics from scratch... what a missed opportunity to make it perfect right away. This racing position looks very yikes.

@@pokerboyfakerish3266 yeah top of the wheel should be roughly at shoulder height (it's past his chin now :S) and when you extend your arms your wrists should rest on top of the wheel (so when you grab it there's a slight bend in your arms) my DIY rig doesn't look nearly as fancy as this one since it's just a simple frame I made out of 2x4's but proper seating position was like the first (and pretty much only XD) thing I did some research into....

Hey guys, thanks for making this video. I was looking for a non-ugly simulator rig for a long time before I found this. Strongly based on this design I made a very similar rig as my first furniture type woodworking experiment. Very very difficult and time consuming but I love the final product. For those wondering (because I was), I used 8 layers of 15mm baltic birch as the main body and it handles 9nm direct drive wheelbase with basically zero flex. Thanks again 4eyes!

I love this build, couldn't have imagined a more aesthetically pleasing sim-rig myself. my only fear with this design would be the stability of the structure, if you decide to one day dive down the rabbit-hole and upgrade to say a 10-20nm steering wheel, compared to the 2-2.5nm in most entry-level wheels

My man.... I love this design. One thing you didn't think of: The Epson ultra-short-throw projector. Ultra short means RIDICULOUSLY short. You could set it in front of the rig, on the floor, a few inches from the wall, and it will project a 100+ " screen. The only downside is cost. Those lenses get very pricey, very quick.

LOVING this build! Ultra Short Throw Projector would be perfect for front mounting the projector. I do buildouts for clients with these for more "budget" focused/size constrained home theaters and would be perfect for this application if latency isn't too huge of a focus. I put budget in parenthesis because, they're not cheap by any means, but in comparison to $49k professional grade projectors, they're a steal. Projectors in general wouldn't be great for competitive games like shooters, but for a "let's have fun" application like a racing sim, it's great.

I built my own cockpit out of lumber also, I used an old actual racing seat, works great! One thing that I did that you may want to do: Remove the pedals from the plastic box that they are housed in and mount the pedals upside down on some plywood (so the pedals are configured like in a car). Fasten the plywood to your racing cockpit at an appropriate spot. I made my upside down pedals container adjustable for shorter or longer legs so when kids use it they can reach the pedals. Great project, enjoy! edit: I am intrigued with your spline design and will work on something like that myself, the only thing that I don't like about it is the distance that the driver sits from the display (wall). This could be resolved by building a monitor/tv support stand closer to the driver.

Otherwise looks very nice

Great build, although it may suffer from "form over function". For instance, there's several poor choices made as far as seating position is concerned ; with the screen position also being somewhat awkward (you have to look upward to see it properly); the seat should be on an angle, not flat; and as others have mentioned, the steering wheel is too close. It sure looks spiffy though, I am just not convinced it is particularly practical. 🤔
@biwan428
@biwan428 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you need to be able to rest your legs on the seat the whole way down the back of the thigh. With this, he's holding his legs up with his feet and hips and overtime, it can become an issue. I developed some sciatic nerve issues with a poor sim seat position. Not sure how long he'll be running at a time, but it adds up.
@Polymer
@Polymer 2 жыл бұрын
@@biwan428 Yep. I don't think the rig will be used much. Maybe more of a 'display' and/or 'conversation piece' than a functional product. They should have researched 'proper seating position', and not relied on their own interpretations....
@ThaJay
@ThaJay 2 жыл бұрын
The seat should go up a bit and slightly angled backwards. The pedals should be closer and the projection should be lower. I would mount the projector upside down so it beams down instead of up. This way you can keep the projector horizontal and still have it project low enough to have the projected dashboard level with the real steering wheel .

I've heard you guys talk a little about cars (caught a glimpse of the S2k in one video!) and F1 before, which is right in my wheelhouse. Now, somehow, we also share sim racing as a hobby! Truly awesome to see your work, great job. I built myself a simple rig to get started and currently working on an overly complex Formula style rig. It's going slow (only so much time, amiright?).. Been a little over a year, but I'm on the closing stages. Not sure I can finish by November but sounds like a great challenge! Love the channel, keep up the great content and general banter. Hopefully the sim racing big will really get you and you'll jump on iRacing! Yeah, a little snobby about realism but it's so much fun to have it all on the line, (virtual) wheel to wheel, racing open wheelers (I mostly run Formula Renault 3.5 these days) on the most amazing Formula tracks in the world. Makes you appreciate F1 even more.

I love this design! I might actually steal some Inspiration from this for my own sim racing build. My only real criticisms of this design would be that the steering wheel seems like it's too close to the driver. At the very least, it would be nice to have some adjustability in the steering wheel and seat. Maybe tilt the seat back a touch to allow the thighs to comfortably rest on the seat rather than hovering in the air. Oh, and you'll definitely want the shifter. And maybe an e-brake handle, too. Trust me on that one

I like the shape and the basic idea, but the steering wheel and pedal position seem _way_ off to me. The wheel is way too high up and way too close, while the pedals seem also too high up It would probably be a very good idea to have that adjustable in some way. I'd love to see how you'd tackle an adjustable version of something like. That would be a very interesting video.

Also, FOV is something that you fine tune in most sims, and it's something that changes with screen size and distance from the screen. It's worth looking into, plenty of guides out there. Inverting the pedals is also a very popular "mod". Just depends how deep you want to dive into sim racing.

while nimitz is a class of US-Carriers, it's also a ship, as most classes of ships are named after the first one, the class leader. Also - US Navy vessels start wit USS (or if not yet in service PCU), not SS, the army, Airforce and Coastguards use other prefixes. Civil ships named with SS would most likely be steam or sailing ships, but as they don't specifically need prefixes to my knowlegde, they can also go without any prefix.

I really like the spine design. you could have saved on materials by doing it hollow with maybe some foam infill... you should definitely go for the shifter too

Love it! Cool design. It's all about fun! 🤷🏻‍♂️ You guys should have seen my first self made simrig. Basically a bunch of wooden posts screwed together on an old chair. 😂 But be aware, simracing is very addictive, before you know it you're spending more money on hardware than you initially wanted. 😁 I can relate. 🤦‍♂️

I think I can see the two things you would change in a second iteration of the design. Both having to do with seat- and steering wheel angle : )

Guys, I love your videos. I only have one criticism, which I have long ago decided not to voice. But when you started talking about what the comments were going to pick up on, and you thought it was saying “like” too much, I had to write this. 😄 Your upspeak/hrt/rising inflection, is driving me up the proverbial! There. I said it. I feel better now 😄 Carry on!

“Real” sim racer here, also lifetime carpenter/ woodworker… my diy sim rig was just thrown together with Baltic birch scraps, in one day… complete with triple monitor mounts… it’s ugly, but it works and I didn’t want to waste more time than 1 day building it..

I was a little disappointed that you didn't actually build a go cart or something like that. Years ago I knew someone who was making a ford model T body out of wood. I have no idea if he ever finished it or if it worked.

seeing the thumbnail my first idea, apart from the shape looking aesthetic, is that how flexible will be that steering wheel support, because that's basically a long lever and force feedback will try it's best to make it sway sideways , maybe can simply be triangulated with reinforcement going each sides of the pedals ?

HAHA The Nimitz is a class of ship, and a ship as well. I had to say it :)

*Very cool design...* might go with this one as well, although I'd like to include a drink holder so I think one of the other "shifter" table ideas you had would work better for my preference. Also, although it is a minor thing to me, is seat height adjustment which would be nice to have. My only concern would probably be the weight, but the design is righteous!

Fun to watch this as an experiment. Me I would go more for function rather than form. The monitor or monitors for best field of view should always be as close to the wheel as possible if the perspective is going to be imersive and correct unless you go for maybe VR, then I would build a compact rig.

I love your design. But when you upgrade your wheel, there's not much support. I built a rig using the Ricmotech RS1 plans. I originally had a Logitech g27, but have since gotten a T300. I believe this rig could handle a direct drive wheel.

Great build. Love the aesthetic. It would be cool if it could be tilted on end to store upright when not in use. Will you be posting the plans on your website? I would love to do this build.

Not just a class of ship but also the name of the first of it’s kind. I served 4yrs on the USS Nimitz CVN-68. Named after Chester W. Nimitz (Admiral )
