I don't know why I never thought about adding weights inside prop guns. Makes all the difference! I'll be using this (or a version) of this on my next prop gun! Looks awesome, and you could never tell it was a cheapo to start.

@@BPCustomCreationsthere's a nerf gun that's pretty similar to this but thing is it's name brand so it will be better, also it looks bigger so that's got it going for it, but it's the one where you pull the handle under the grip to prime it so maybe that's bad, it's the nerf mega bigshock.

That looks amazing. I took one of those cheap Star Wars blasters you can get these days - the all white ones - and sprayed it with primer and then sprayed it black and used a silver and bronze sharpie to add paint rubbing effects. It was my first prop, but I think it looks pretty cool.

Knockoff nerf guns are great for customs! I made a buzz bee toys sniper rifle into a neat steampunk rifle! Looks great! Consider this. Instead of using a brush to add your silver worn edges, try this old technique I learned from an ILM artist years ago. Use a dry wooden popsicle stick with a thin layer of paint on it. Basically it's a dry brush technique with wood. Rub and scrape the stick along the edges of the model and it'll give you a much more accurate, realistic application of the silver with hard edges, as it reproduces how edges are actually worn by contact with by other hard surfaces. The uneven wood also adds randomness, streaks and texture. And this application technique won't let the paint go too far beyond areas of edge contact that wouldn't actually be made in reality. Try it in multiple passes with varying shades of silver and primer to simulate worn layers. Don't forget to add some real dents and scratches, because this gun has been dropped, slammed and used a lot in space battles! I can't wait to see what you create next.

Wonderful build! Dollar store toys in Japan have a bit more color options than here in the US it seems. Doesn't matter once you paint it, though! I loved the use of cat scratch box inserts for your airbrush booth. I use florists' foam still in the plastic, but yours seems more environmentally friendly! The use of the popper for a palette is awesome, I really enjoy how that's gotten around to all the makers I watch. I have one, but it's yellow. I don't know if that would affect my color consistency, now that I think about it, but I'm not that great with color anyway so it probably doesn't make a big difference. Thanks for the video!

If you need to add weight, try linseed putty. It's easy to mold and holds it's shape. I used it to fill PVC pipe cut and glued into a base stand for LED lights and they add enough weight to allow them to be extended upwards to 2 meters.

@@BPCustomCreations The great thing is that it's fairly heavy by itself and can be molded into cavities so that the weight is perfectly distributed. Add some to the grip, the center mass or barrel, space permitting. And if the weight distribution feels wrong you can pinch some out and try again without anything loose and rattling inside, or having to drill into the plastic to add anchor points. I use it in props and the added weight allows actors to react to the objects as heavy instead of light plastic with a paint job.

Minor critique since you are using 3D printing - try using filler primer or sanding the prints a bit more so they have less of a striated/lined look. I used to think I could sand the 3D prints after assembly, but it's a lot easier to sand each print as you finalize them before gluing onto the model.

I sanded the parts a little but I figured the orientation of the layer lines wouldn't be that big of a deal on this one and they don't bother me at all

Also woodfiller + little bit of acetone mixed make a good filler to sand if using PLA.

I’ve always loved this concept of improving store bought blasters. I do have questions though. How do you manage to just look at something in the store like this though and know how you could turn it into something so beautiful? What sanding grits do you use on plastic like this? Why not keep the actual shooting functionality? How do you protect your paint? Clear coat?
@BPCustomCreations

Thanks for taking interest 👍 I like to find things with shapes that look interesting to paint and weather. I didn't habe any plan in mind when starting this project, ai just let it unfold as I went. Having a bunch of different materials on hand allows you to make things up as you go. The sandpaper is 240 followed by 400, and also 600 in some places. The way I changed the shape didn't allow me to keep it shooting which I don't personally care about anyway. It's not clear coated since I don't plan to handle it much or with dirty/sweaty hands or anything but you could spray a matte varnish over the whole thing.

@@BPCustomCreations For starters, maybe those coin cell battery holders (not sure if the 100 yen store carries those, but they're in that price range), with a trigger switch soldered in? If you made something like the top of your gun removable with magnets, you' wouldn't even need to make that many changes (like a battery compartment door). Quickest start is to cannibalize those $1 kits that already come with a coin cell holder, a battery and a string of LEDs (can be easily tinted with colored sharpies or translucent model kit paints). All that's needed is to solder out the excess LEDs you don't need (for future use, since you can buy those coin cell holders separately), wire in a trigger button between the battery and the first LED and clean up the whole mess to put it inside your prop.

@@whitewolf3051Laser tag guns use more electronics, since some models can tag their light to filter out friendly fire in matches with several teams. But something like the Nerf version of the Colonial Marines pulse rifle from Aliens would be a good candidate to transfer the guts from a laser tag gun into.
