Great vid Dave. Just one thing I would add. When I balance my heli blades I put tape on the lighter blade but don't fold it over until I check the balance. That way I can simply cut off part of the tape and balance again. When the balance is right, then I fold it over. Just my 2 cents worth lol. Keep the great vids coming!!

Another fantastic tip Dave. In just 3 years I have gone from crashing and braking small toy helicopters to building 450 class heli's and now I have started to build planes. The A380 1.5m wing span with 4 EDF is my latest project. Most of my knowledge has come from watching your videos. Thanks for all the useful info, I often wonder what you guys did in the days before the internet, lots of experimental crashing and hrs of library books is my guess

Thanks, it worked perfectly! I used an old Turnigy blue wonder. Very sensitive. One thing I had a problem with was getting the coils out, it took me a minute to take out the bearings. Other than that, it's perfect! Subscribed
@trappy7712 жыл бұрын
This works well for car tires if you have a car with rear drum brakes. Adjust the rear bearing to allow for free movement, or if you squeeze the pressure from the caliper. Whatever it takes to get the drag down. I have balanced my own tires In between sets for a long time like this. An old RC plan hobbyist showed me this 25 years ago.

Great video! Lots like this for DJI balancers. I appreciate how much effort DJI goes into balancing props, as I use tape on mine but very small amounts to achieve a perfect balance. I even put tape on the outside of motors and that stops vibrations for video.

It's worth saying that this will work best on two-bladed props - odd-numbered props (3 blades, 5 blades) will be sensitive to the angle the motor's being held at in the vice.

I got a set of 2 master airscrews from hobbyking for my umx geebee as3x (5.5x4) and the 1 I tried to balance was pretty bad and it took a long time but that might be cuz it was the first prop I balanced and I did use light tape and steel wool to balance (to be sure that I didn't mess up that prop)

Cool, but.. 1. Must balance the motor first; 2. Thee ball bearing will only turn under a relatively high torque. This method is enough for a rough indication, but it won't have the sensitivity of balancers whose shafts rest on large-diameter discs with 12:1 or more reduction ratio. Not to mention magnetic balancers, that BTW are great DIY project too. :)
@bessybessy9 жыл бұрын
Exactly! The friction in the bearings is much larger than friction on the cheap DIY magnetic balancer
@adrianw29729 жыл бұрын
+corisco tupi Totally agree Magnetic balancers are so cheap, so much less friction, and don't need balancing; but this is useful in an emergency. (but I have a box of balanced props) The method of adding tape is 'odd'. Why stick it down and then peel off again if wrong? Touch the tape to the leading edge, only press down if correct. The change in CoG is minimal. Make sure that you balance your motors too, otherwise it's like adding a balanced tire to an unbalanced rim!

Another AWESOME video Dave. You really are the MAN. One thing though, how do you know if the magnets are balanced before you throw the prop on? Do you first balance the motor magnet can and then add the prop or are these brushless motors already balanced from the factory?? Just curious. I've seen other videos on how to balance a brushless motor useing a laser pointer.
@PanayiotisSavva9 жыл бұрын
Here's a question for you. If the motor bell is not balanced beforehand, doesn't this mean that it will influence how the props are balanced? Do you balance the motor bell first?

Question: What's the benefit of a single bladed prop? Seems to me a shorter double bladed would be more efficient, single blade would have to be longer to create the same thrust, right? Just something I've always wondered about... ;)

When balancing the blades move tape closer to tip and it get heavier

what if the motor your using to make your balancer is off balance? Do you have a good way to check this possible issue?
@ryanfonseca327010 жыл бұрын
Great idea, what about the motor can tho? On multirotors ive noticed some motors cans are unbalanced and when your looking for 100% zero vibs you need them balanced, So do you balance them at all? this would work for 99.9% of situations out there tho. And maybe the small amount of the motor can balance doesnt effect it at a static state vs 20k rpms....

If you put it on the leading edge, wind will go over it and it will stay there. if you put on trailing edge or the back or front, wind will grab into the edges of the tape and it will come unglued or just rip off at high rpm.

If you heard what he said in the video, he said "OLD brushless motors." By 'old' he's implying that the motor was used prior to this little D.I.Y. Havin' said that, if the motor WERE off-balance, it would have shown up in whatever-it-was the the motor used to run in.

@rcmodelr12 жыл бұрын
Why do you fold the tape over the leading edge before you have it balanced and know that's where the tape needs to be? Folding tape won't change weight so why not wait with folding tape over prop until after you know how much or where it needs positioning?

@Ucceah8 жыл бұрын
that's why he puts the tape on the leading edge, the air presses it tight. personally i wouldnt use vinyl electrical tape though because it doesnt tend to stick well and "creep" over time. sanding is another method i dont like but there are many methods, from drilling tiny divots and sanding, to a mix of 1-minute nail polish and tungsten dust. personally i would propably use aluminum tape and scrape some off with my fingernail, if it was too much. the glue on that stuff is great, and it's pretty thin.
