Long term review of my DIY ebike conversion of a folding 48 volt ebike to a powerful 60 volt 1,500 watt bike for under $2,000. Considering the compact size, performance, range, and price I think this is a great option.

The only problem with 72v on this build is that if he exceeds the 1500w limit his controller is currently set to, he risks damaging the nylon gears in his bafang motor. It should hold up fine at its current power level (bafang motors are known for holding double their continuous rated power in normal use, despite their nylon gears), but AFAIK going past 1500w is asking for trouble. I suppose he could swap to metal gears if he doesn't mind the noise. Imo a new build would be a better idea. I actually think a Wired Cruiser build would be cool- he could use the stock battery/controller/screen to upgrade a different bike, and slap a big 72v battery and beefy controller on the cruiser to find out just how robust its metal reinforced gears are lol.

@@Zirassi nah these motors can handle a shit ton. i run 3000 watts sometimes on mine hehe. my motor isnt even a bafang, its a chinese unlabeled copy of a G60. but the problem is just temperature. at room temp you can run them at 3000 watts easily, just with a gentle start. but after the motor is around 50c then the gears will start softening and you can hear them skipping in the motor when starting. just gotta be mindful of temp and these motors are great :)

Similar build here: RadMini fat tire folder, Phaserunner, dual Tesla batteries, 3000 watts peak, 40mph. Downside is it's a hardtail, but a Suntour seat post mitigates some of that. Upside is it looks stock, throttle is buttery smooth and precise, park rangers smile and wave, and it out-climbs pretty much any mid drive e-bike unless it's a dedicated mountain e-bike. I was tempted to go with a 3k motor, but that motor weighs 48 pounds, mine only weighs 9. Thanks for the video!

Still think this was your best ebike. People keep saying the folding aspect is gimmicky, but I can actually fit that bike folded into my small sedan. You can't do that with a Wired Freedom or a moped type. And I think it blends in pretty well for recreation multi use trail riding. It looks pretty much like a common BMX bike, especially with those handlebars.

Your build is so clean, but for my mountain biking use case I went with a bbs02 with a 52v battery and upping the amps to 22 makes it reach ~32mph on an old cheap full suspension mountain bike frame. I'm not confident pushing anymore than ~1200w out of the motor and I've reached the point of diminishing returns as well. It's been a year since building it and I've loved it but I will be retiring the bike this summer and building a nicer bike with a cyc x1 stealth and up the wattage to 2600 with a 52v battery. Keep up the content, your video quality has improved so much over the months!

Glad to hear your awesome bike held up. I ride a 52V BBSHD-equipped Trek hybrid bike, top speed is at least 32 mph, though I probably can't get there as fast as your bike would. I can't stress enough how important a big battery and really good tires are. Kept getting rear flats until I went with Schwalbe Marathon E-Plus and zero flats since. Definitely get your hands on a P-51, maybe you could get one from them without the battery and rear hub motor for a savings. I totally agree its suspension put's it in a league of its own, at least as far as E-pedal type scramblers, I know people are finding upgraded shocks for some of the other brands, but they still look to be limited in overall travel based on the original design and geometry of their rear swing arms. Something I've been watching for is for somebody to do a mid-drive setup, its probably been done and I just haven't come across it, but I'm super curious about how one would perform.

Your bike is awesome. My perfect frame would be that style, with bottle cage mounts built in. So you could keep internal battery and add yours. "battery blender" to use both. Dual motor mod would be cool. Not sure about P51. Frame looks a bit better than super73, but small wheels seem to waste space. No pedaling or cargo rack means waste of a bike even if the frame could be sturdy enough to hold batteries.

I think the P-51 with its open frame can accommodate a custom 60-70 amp 72V’s. And the motor should be upgraded to a 3000w that peaks at 6. I see the e-bikes that say 18,000, but I don’t know if that is good on the motor. 6000 is plenty.
@DanielCrist
@DanielCrist Жыл бұрын
As a motorcycle rider, I would say that your next upgrade should immediately be very large and bright front and rear turn indicators - especially if you're going to be riding in the streets at speeds faster than a Tour de France cyclist. Us motorcyclists are already invisible to car drivers even with obnoxiously loud engines, but you with the silent bike are goddamn Harry Potter sneaking around the castle at night, so protect yourself! Having a brake light also helps keep you from becoming a horizontal Banksy. It looks like you might have a small setup for all of this on the rear at least, but that's tiny and too hidden under the seat. If you need to get an antibody shop to weld you a little bracket on the back and front. Trust me, you want a big setup that will be visible from a few car lengths away from the higher seating angle and whose light will actually be visible during the day. Also drivers will just think of you as less of a dick if you're using large, obvious indicator lights Finally maybe just get yourself a waterproof Bluetooth speaker that's really loud and play music while you ride so other drivers notice you faster. I have the Wonderboom 2, and this thing is fucking LOUD for the size, with loads of bass for the size. I think you can even connect two to one device to act as left and right channels, but just ONE is enough for me to hear over my bike engine driving around town doing 35-45, and the battery lasts for hours. Enjoy cruising and stay safe.

heh this is what i think and i don't expect NPL to read this comment that being said i have been watching the channel since towards the end of the mtn ebike build then i followed the channel from the Crooked Path e Bike build and the trail riding and allowing your friend to ride it and doing riding videos putting the ebike you built up to use i would love to see another bike upgrade build series take a mid or low end bike and just go ham on it take what you learned and apply them to help improve your next build don't go and buy and high end bike just to put front and rear shocks that would be lame plus not to mention there isn't much content with that i mean if you wanna buy that bike or have it sent to you as a promo for that company is one thing but for me to do just two upgrades is a bit underwhelming again at the end of the day its your money you spend it how you see fit another idea is to buy a frame off of aliexpress or another site like it then start hand pick the parts you want to use for it show from the start of the brain storm of what you have in mind to making a part list that you will need to going threw and buying the parts, unboxing the parts, building the ebike up that is what i would recommend another way to look at it is a channel on here called "mighty car mods" notice how each car for the most part they go threw swap a few parts some more then others but at the end of it it feels like you went on a journey with them and said car or truck ........ this comment has gone on way longer then i intended it to and for that i am sorry and i truly hope NPL reads this if so hi and keep up the videos love seeing what you do

It's funny to see this video when my Wired Freedom will arrive in 6 or 7 days. I think there's a lot to be said in favor of your crooked path build for someone who particularly wants that smaller folding form factor, but that doesn't mean a wired freedom is "the next best thing". First of all, the motor is NOT exactly the same. The Custom Hengtai motor in the Wired is rated for 1000w continuous (33% more than your bafang) and has metal reinforced gears rated for 27000 km, and is actually covered by a warranty at the power levels we're discussing. Secondly, is 1500w really "very similar" to 2000 (actually 2100+ according to reviewers fyi)? Why phrase it like that? Otherwise, I appreciate the recap on your build. I was torn between doing something like your build, buying a 48v 35 to 60 AH battery bike, and grabbing a Wired Freedom. I went out and test rode some Aventon bikes to compare 20 x 4 and 26 x 4 tire sizes. I discovered I love the immense stability of 26 x 4 so I bought a Wired Freedom.

New build. Make the crooked back to stock and keep the all the upgrades parts and put them on the p51. Ramp the power of the stock motor close to 2kw and see what kind of performance you get. Suspension on p51 is absolutely the best but like you said the stock performance with that $3.8k asking price is way too steep for that bike. I like the new lyric graffiti 2023 for now. Under $3k and you get a bike that will go around 33 to 35mph.

Ok your key components motor, bms, battery and display. The battery being the hardest part to choose because you have to insure it's well made. No one wants a battery fire due to cheap battery cells and over charging. When you look around battery voltages are on the rise. Soon 60 and 70 volts batteries will be the norm. The bike you built is perfect for the range and price. With your bike you can go anywhere you want and nobody is going to give you a second look. What more could you ask for 😂
