Just the simple concept of applying geometric shapes to time signiatures alone has blown my head wide open, like how the hell did I never think about using it to help keep a visual track of time without counting out beats in my head???

This is the kind of stuff I aspire to write in my jazz pop fusion band. In the future, I predict that 4/4 may be less and less clung to as listeners evolve to hear newer meters. There are infinitely many meters.
@alexchimi7093 Жыл бұрын
there are, but 8/4 and 4/4 are very hard to distinguish. the more complex you get, the harder the brain clings to whatever pattern there is. Adam Neely's video on "The Psychology of Extreme Rhythms" explains it very well

5/4 pattern utilizes the rhythm which seems a lot more like quintuplet groove (perhaps it could be 5/8 or in some cases 5/16). I like how the 3rd part has more of a 7/8 groove

i felt it was more of a 10/8 beat (3+3+2+2) if it makes sense
@oddsynth Жыл бұрын
@@raresplays969 I can hear sorta 3+2+3+2 (10/8 with snare in the middle) in the drums but now relistening with melodic parts I can see how they follow the pattern you described so it's tricky! kinda like both at the same time

Awesome content! Any recommendations for developing a feel in odd time signatures? Clearly 4/4 is what western music is based on and what I grew up listening to. Id like to be able to improvise and freely create in other time signatures.
@oddsynth Жыл бұрын
You can break up the time signature you have into simpler parts, for example you can treat 7/4 as 4/4 followed by 3/4 (and more complex scenarios). That way, it'll be easier to follow with. Or you can think of it as skipping a beat if you want. For improvisation, just familiarize yourself with the groove and I think it'll come easier with practice
@b-r-a-i-n-r-o-t Жыл бұрын
i like putting a couple elements down to almost treat like a metronome which lets me pull a pulse out to wrap other elements around. so treating maybe a kick, snare, or riff as your "clock" and getting a pulse out of it that way

Find music in odd time signatures! Two great bands to listen to are Tool and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard - the Gizz are the ones I'm a fan of and they use 5/4 and 7/4 CONSTANTLY

also yeah it helps to find a specific musical phrase that you can freely apply to a given time signature. I use Gizz's Nonagon motif for 7/4

Very interesting and well presented. I’m not sure about the first foray into 3/4 time sig, it sounds more like 6/8 to me, but I’m not an expert. The visual metronome is excellent, but personally I would prefer an audible one as well - at least for a few cycles. Regards.

@oddsynth Жыл бұрын
yes it's a lot like 7/8 (but written in 7/4). though, if you trick your brain to focus on quarter notes it starts to sound a bit different maybe because 3/4 is usually made as 'waltz' and accents on 3?
