I'm not vegan, but I agree with this sentiment. Perhaps there could be an added factor in the "evaluation" part of the video ? Not just "does it replicate steak 100%" but something like "would it fit your needs and cravings in situations where omnivores would get steak without really thinking"... ? Like, Merle did say she'd serve it at a fancy dinner : could you make it to celebrate someone's promotion ? Would it suit your brother's 25th birthday ? Those kinds of questions... ?

I'm vegan and love Gordan Ramsey. New and old. I have both the UK and US versions of Kitchen Nightmares on all the time. He also opened a full Vegan restaurant and has done funny collaborations with a vegan or two. All other "negative" comments he's made about vegetarians/vegans are him just busting balls because that's...kinda his gimmick and it's funny. In one of his UK episodes he helped a vegetarian restaurant, and at no point did his insist they serve meat. And then in the US version, he helped a restaurant in LA that had tons of fake vegan meat for vegan dishes and he just told them to ditch it and switch it for unprocessed vegan options. He is one of the few celebrity chefs who I think truly loves food and cooking. AND tons of his recipes can be vegan-nized thanks to how good vegan alternatives to cheese, meat, and milk are now.

Helpful hint when roasting any sort of vegetable that you want to peel the skin off of: put it in a bowl and cover with plastic wrap and let it sit for 10-15 mins. Ok Merle, I love you. I wanna figure this shit out: if you blended the meat of the eggplant and added a combination of the watermelon stake recipe (I'm thinking take the pulp from watermelon after you juice it) + potentially the vital wheat gluten steak recipe: would you get a perfect steak? Like can you please make a FRANK-EN-STEAK RECIPE VIDEO????

I wish there wasn’t so much emphasis on everything being “steak-like”. Wouldn’t it be less fraught to just call it what it is? Roasted eggplant? Not all vegans want to revisit eating meat or like things that taste “like meat”. I do get the notion if inclusivity but if you try to replicate something that you already know is impossible you are setting yourself up for disappointment. IMHO. And, you’re lovely and talented and I subscribed
@IsaacWale2004 Жыл бұрын
I actually agree with you. Just call it "roasted eggplant" or "aubergine steak" or something along those lines... it doesn't have to be seen as a "meat substitute"

By the way, the salt on the rub is very, very important as eggplants for it to have the right texture and flavor. You need the salt on the outside to withdraw some of the liquid that’s on the inside to give it a more firmer, less squishy taste.
@lesliefranklin18703 жыл бұрын
Interesting idea. Generally I don't like making one food appear to be another food. Also, it seems complicated and takes a long time to prepare. I'm glad it seems to taste good.
@JubeiKibagamiFez3 жыл бұрын
If you decide to do this recipe again, you could put the eggplant in a bag or container to make it easier to peel, like a roasted pepper.
@Vanessa-fs7oz3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I wouldn't even mind if Gordon was mocking veganism with this meal because obviously it's delicious and will encourage people to eat more plant based meals, so that's cool with me. Personally, I don't think he's mocking anyone. I think he's a business man and he realizes that plant-based food, even as a trend, is where the money's flowing.

Ah, check your stove's manual on whether you should have the door closed while broiling. Most electric ranges want the door slightly open, it what is literally called the broil stop position where the door settles at a few inches open. I've seen oven doors crack from the heat, or occasionally not cycle correctly.

I would've done it in a different way, frying it with the sauce after the broiling part. to get the flavour inside the eggplant, i'd let it sit in the sauce for a few hours after broiling it (and maybe make some holes to allow the penetration of the spices even further). something that could also make it taste more like a steak would be slicing it to smaller pieces (keeping the lenght, but making thinner slices). add some olive oil, the sauce and the pieces of the eggplant to medium heat in the frying pan for about 20minutes, turning sides. this should probably do it. if anyone tries it, please let me know! i'm pretty positive the outcome could be so much better.
