I shamelessly love her books. This was the first one I read too! To be honest I missed the controversy around this entirely. I haven't even tried to guess at what might be problematic about them. After the Twilight aftermath (another series I shamelessly loved in high school) I had to leave book controversy behind and just peacefully enjoy my "dumb bitch books" (great title btw lol) away from the rest of society.

Omg finally someone else mentioned the weirdest line ever : "my bowels turned watery". It was said at least three times 😶
@tasierico3643 жыл бұрын
That was the most irritating repetitive line in the series. The sad part is that the same line is used in other books by SJM. One time could have been considered funny, but having it repeated in several different series is just annoying.

I see alot of people who didn't like the first book, and didn't continue with the series. In my opinion, the first book (the first half at least) was the weakest of the series. If you keep going you are greatly rewarded! I mean I'm sure there are people who didn't like the whole series, but still! I loved the last third of the book, up until then I didn't love it but tolerated it. I didn't really believe the love story between them, it was very one sided but I could see how she felt the way she did. I had a tough time imagine the masks, it was bizzare. Tamlin at court was awful and came off as a coward while she was killing it. Rys was a breath of fresh air. It wasn't until the second book that it actually made sense why it didn't feel right it wasn't supposed to. :)

for haden, the body starts feeling the need to pee when there's a certain amount of liquid in the bladder, which simulates the receptors in the walls due to the volume and pressure, i'd say around 300 ml would be the usual amount you have when you start feeling nature's call.. the part of the brain that deals with urination is close to the one that deal with stress and pain, so when someone is stressed, because the brain is constantly in contact with the bladder and there's an increase in signals, the bladder can be "accidentally" simulated there are a lot more factors but the TL;DR is that you don't need to be holding in pee to then pee yourself when scared, there's always some liquid there waiting for you :)

Many of the ACOTAR fans treat the first book as a.. prequel of sorts. But I do like to read it sometimes to see all of the hints and foreshadowing. I always see more each time I read it. The second book though... it feels like a door has been fully opened and Prythian is explored more. I adore it.

The name Tamlin comes from the Scottish story and ballad of Tam Lin. He was a fairy living in the woods who would sleep with women that came into the woods unless they left a ring or cloak in offering. A woman who owns the woods went in and they hooked up- she got pregnant and then went back to the woods to get some herbs to have an abortion (cuz she doesn’t want to raise a baby alone) and he says he’s actually mortal but the queen of fairy holds him and is gonna sacrifice him to hell as part of a seven year tithe. So the woman saves him from the queen (and he turns into a bunch of animals and there’s a test. You can see where the inspiration for this book came from..)- they get married, the end.

Maitland Johnson I agree about Kelsey completely! The book was hard to get through for me not only bc of her inability to make reasonable decisions, but her seemingly orientalist viewpoint/fetishization of Indian culture in general? I thought the world building had potential but I think it would have been best if she stuck to an original idea instead of messily collaging bits and pieces of Indian folklore to fit her narrative
