Today we dive into a video that has been on my mind and in the words for a LONG time. For the first time I put together all of the world's craziest VR hardware that anyone can purchase and recreated the setup found in Ready Player One's books/ movie.
Super high resolution VR Headset: Varjo XR3
Omnidirection Treadmill: Katwalk C
Bhaptics Full body haptics
VRFree Gloves ( stopped working really early on)
Celia Scent module
Full Body Tracking vs TundraTrackers
And more-
All I have to say is.. I don't think we're quite ready for this.

Yeah as it can clearly be seen in today's Society that technology is advancing far faster than we can freaking evolve because that's just the effect technology seems to have on itself while we obviously just don't have the capacity to evolve that quick and the effects of this are a great immaturity with the technology that we have

Thrill, I just want to add up one thing. You said "It failed as a proof of concept". But worked brilliantly as exactly that - proof of concept. You assembled everything together and it worked to the level you were trying to achieve. It doesn't matter at all if the software was not working together, it doesn't matter if some hardware parts were falling off during it - you were trying to prove that this is possible, this can be done with some time and dedication, maybe even to an easy to set up and use extend. All the "ifs" are out of the question when you just try to show "this is possible". And your results are astonishing

@@StarCat76 I guess it depends on how immersive the technology is, if is something like Sword Art Online where a brain computer interface is sending information to your brain, then it could be 100% immersive. And there are gonna be a lot of security protocols for that kind of technology for sure, but just like with any kind of technology that has existed, people will always find a way to use it for bad purposes. Though, I don't think we are close to have the Nerve Gear, at least not until the next 40 years or more. I would say we are more close to Ready Player One instead.

the problem is making it affordable for everyone and make the technology small so people have space to put in their homes. @markjvp like, i highly doubt there can be much of a hub for vr as a whole, BUT realistically speaking you might see platforms such as steam or epic (if they get heavily into vr) build out there platform homes such as steamvr home, to be something more akin to a hub, and make them into a much more desirable thing that people want to use. Like it kinda seems to me like that could be a really good marketing tool for getting people onto your vr platform.

I kind of hope this is one of those things where we look back at this video and go "wow look how rough things used to be". VR already has come a long way since my original janky controllerless Devkit 2 that I had to directly load games into before wearing. More than anything I hope we see a renaissance in VR content though. I think the tech is a matter of time if there's stuff to engage with in the hardware.

I call this a success, why? - Took several pieces of hardware that were made by several companies without thinking about one another working together. - Modded and added programs and probably more to get things working with the hardware. - You even took glitches and bugs and found a quick fix and work around. - Got everything working even for a short time being close to Ready Player One without the full prepared and ready for games, out of the box tech. You're one of the first or maybe only to experience the closeness of Ready Player One.

I've always stood by the idea that RPO's VR is way more accessible than people give it credit for. A headset, a haptic suit, an omni-treadmil and gloves. We can absolutely achieve this in the next few decades and beyond. That being said, I'm still faintly amused at VR smell solutions. Of all all the senses to have in VR, an in-depth smell system sounds like fluff at best. I mean, really think it through, what kind of smells will the average video game have? Burning fuel and gunpowder? Blood and corpses? Cooked meat? Are they really ones you want to get a whiff of all the time?

They suck me in more than any other VR content creator I know. The background music is good, the cuts are great, the way you explain things is also great. I'm glad I found your channel man! Keep up the great work. In terms of this video, that is crazy you put all that together and got it all to work. I can only imagine the level of immersion you experienced and I'm kinda jealous! When I first tried VR, I was blown away by how immersive it was, and still get that WOW moment pretty often when playing things like a heavily modded Skyrim VR. But to have full body tracking with haptics everywhere must have been INSANE! I really feel VR is the most immersive way to play games, and i hope that one day hardware like this can become affordable and that it all works together seamlessly. I also hope more AAA games come to VR, or more big games get adapted for VR (in a decent manner) cuz right now a lot of games for VR just feel like large tech demos. I hope we get more games like half-life Alyx, and that one day there is integration for the kind of hardware you used in the video. That would revolutionize gaming in such an incredible way! Although your probably right in saying people would never go outside or leave their house. But I already don't so this is all just a plus for me haha

Way back in the day when computers were fresh and new you had the same exact problem. No product worked on other systems. The IT conglomerate created a VERY good solution: The OSI model. I would recommend.... using the OSI model! LOL The transport (4) and session (5) layers seem the most important to get the devices talking with each other, and then the presentation layer (6) would need an industry agreed upon common set of interactions that the application layer can call, and presentation does the translation from common calls to hardware specific functions.

This is why I love thrillseeker, his ability to use not just his words but his whole body language, perfect videoes+pictures and voice to describe how things felt and was for that moment. This makes us as viewers really understand a whole lot better what he is doing/feeling and kind of makes us feel the same things. (atleast for me)

Almost all the friction is removed if you consider a full suit with tracking, haptics, gloves and boots built in - that will be a good direction, then you will have multiple vendors of suits competing in the space. Standards here could ensure compatibility. Barring that, an API broker style middle-ware layer would be the only thing that made sense. Cool stuff

A note of the Friction: In ready player one, most users don't actually wear all of that gear. The basic oasis set is just gloves and a headset. What wade puts on is equivalent to the setup you donned, the highest tech, most immersive setup money can buy. He puts on all of that gear to become fully immersed, but the whole concept of VR goes big with the release of the Oasis, the platform that unites the hardware. So you're basically spot on with what needs to happen. Great video Thrill!

This right here, when I talk about VR to non-VR players, they always come back to "ill play it when its like ready player one". I'm like... it's already there... They don't realize that not everyone had a full body tracker....
@matthewstone3210
@matthewstone3210 Жыл бұрын
@@doperegistry8504 Exactly, and not everybody wanted one either. Some people want to just casually play some games, other people want to immerse their entire reality into the Oasis. The former you can do right now, but the later is still in the works

8:15. This is terrifying. I've been addicted to video games before but something this immersive combined with genuinely great games could cause some actual problems for me and even those with more self control. I sense some legitimate problems being caused for society in general due to VR in the future...and it being being common for people to not care about school, jobs, maintaining health, and instead earning a living through exchanging in-game currencies. We already see this on a smaller scale with video games now but idk it freaks me out and excites me at the same time.

I never got super into World of Warcraft, but I always loved the idea behind it. A giant, real world to explore. Where you can walk places and really feel the expanse of the land. I loved to walk places in the times I played WoW because it looked amazing. The walking made it immersive. You just running in VR as your first instinct matched up so well with how I remember my few experiences with World of Warcraft. That's what I want out of VR. I don't even own a headset (I hope to have one SoonTM) but it's inspiring to me.

I'm moderately adventurous and have spent alot of time outdoors exploring. I also live in South Africa with it's amazing topographical- and biodiversity. I also love VR... it will have to go a very long way before I'll view it as more than a neet distraction or a medium for experimenting. The weirdest thing however, is that even though I'm a very outgoing person IRL I find it next to impossible to speak in somethings like VRchat!
@iMatterhorn7

Why do you think that is? Just curious since I'm the opposite side of the spectrum. I'm pretty introverted and get stressed out talking to new people sometimes, so I'm hoping when I get a VR headset I'll be able to talk to people better in VRChat since they're strangers on the Internet I don't have to ever see again if I wanted, so less is at stake.

If you are Afrikaans it may be that you simply feel a little out of place amongst international folks. Your age also may have something to do with it. I'm getting older and I think I no longer have the energy to interact with the wide range of ages you get in apps like VRChat. I tend to stick to single player games in VR and I'm sure I'm missing out but perhaps the right app/game may just have to come along to pull me into multiplayer interaction.

The idea of the electronic suit was banging in my head for like 2 years, your video inspired me to finally take on a project and do some initial prototypes and research. I doubt I'll sell it because of all the red tape that comes with electro-stimulating devices. It would be open source kit probably. I have an experience with designing, testing and making electronics, if one is reading this and has experience in mechanics, electronics, biology, software, etc. consider replaying to this comment please. I'm open to collaboration on this project because that way it will happen faster cause I obviously can't work on this full time. I'm not a native speaker btw. but I think it won't be an issue.

This seems really awesome! I hope our technology advances to a point where we can be in alternate virtual wolds as realistic as the real one as an average consumer! The only thing I'm afraid of is that once people are in they might not care as much to improve our actual reality. We should look to always be improving but having all your senses controlled through one System could be very dangerous and addictive really fast if there aren't posed any restriction on the technology.

Man, I am excitedly waiting for larger companies to invest heavily into VR. The amount of things that are available right now is great and I would like to see the expansion of the industry. As an example, I would love to get an owo vest but there is so little it is currently compatible with. Money is also a factor, but that is just an eventuality.

Congrats on your grand experiment glad you got as far as you did. Hopefully in the coming years companies can come up with an all in one package solution that developers can get behind. Unfortunately the price point would probably have to be less than a grand for consumers to get behind it.

Wasn't such an awesome setup rather expensive in Ready Player One (the book) too? So even if remaining expensive, it would not be all that different from the book. And it doesn't necessarily need _everyone_ to get behind it, but enough people that developers support it would be helpful. Could also work by hardware lasting a long time so consumers can build up a nice setup over a long time period.
