Asking the question honestly requires an open mind for the quite obvious answer. Just a little hint, don't go assuming motive. It will backfire most of the time. Some might even add a dislike just to spite you. If "Why not" is a reason to make these scissors, then it is also a perfectly good reason to downvote the video. But you didn't understand that, did you...

Generic steel that you get at the hardware store is mild (low-carbon) and can not be hardened through simple heat treatment. It does not have enough carbon to produce the deformed crystal structure that results in greater hardness. They can be case hardened by heating in the absence of oxygen while packed with charcoal. This dissolves some carbon into the surface of the steel and raises it above the critical concentration. In fact, case hardening can often be superior than starting with high-carbon tool steel because parts retain some flexibility from the soft core, but can have a durable edge. See Clickspring's video kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJCwoWScg998ipo
@urituchmanpigeon
@urituchmanpigeon 6 жыл бұрын
ElectricGears thanks for the in depth and informative comment! Somehow I thought, hey, if there's less carbon in the steel than I'll just get a lower amount of hardness, clearly that's not how metallurgy works. I didn't know that you can produce high carbon steel with arguably simple methods, that is the coolest thing!

I love this guy. He's a genius! I keep thinking that his projects would go so much faster with power tools. Then I stop, and remind myself, I wouldn't be as impressed and it would ruin this pure art. This is true art!! Not a copy of someone else's idea. It's art in its purest form. I'm highly jealous of the talent. I could make a reproduction of it. The talent to me is the original idea. The hand work, oh, trust me, it blows my mind. It takes hours. And if you mess up.... ugh. I know. But I use mostly power tools for my art.

I've just stumbled upon your channel, and I'm going to binge-watch everything. I have to say, after the first 2 minutes of this video, I'm hooked. I've absolutely subscribed. And while I know that these are a sort of 'joke' creation, I can actually see how a pair of these scissors could be really practical. If you made them with the blades coming out at the 90° angle that they leave the handle part instead of curving them back around, I think you could make a pretty awesome set of sewing/tailoring scissors. They'd make the process of cutting an even hem easier, that's for sure!
