the reasoning for your highschool art teacher telling you that pieces need to be hollow or they'll explode is because clay will dry quicker when it is hollowed. If you made two identical pieces except one was hollow and the other not, the one that is hollow will dry quicker, and the one that is not hollow might possibly still have trapped water inside, which could create the explosion
@aggroblu97533 ай бұрын
It’s annoying they tell us it’ll explode if it doesn’t have a hole rather than explain it’ll take too long to dry. everyone in the comments of every ceramicist is like “it’ll explode!!!?!” If there isn’t a whole new but if our teachers actually *taught* us, we wouldn’t be so concerned about the imaginary air explosion problem

Clay is not dry until it is half way through bisque firing, so super thick walls require a very slow bisque firing to allow all the steam to escape.

from my limited understanding, most potters try not to put anything thicker than an inch into the kiln, as the chance of it exploding increases.

Any moisture will expand and explode. The thin walls dry and keep the whole piece light weight
@emman24254 ай бұрын
It helps it dry a lot faster, if its too thick you don't know how much moisture is left and it *will* explode in the kiln if not 100% dry
