Just to note, the "objects flying close to the camera" thing is actually why Star Wars Episode 1 Racer feels faster than F-Zero X despite the latter having higher numeric top speeds. F-Zero X has you racing along a mostly barren ribbon of track high above the ground, whereas Star Wars Episode 1 Racer has you flying through canyons, jungles, ice caves etc. at ground level.

Love it. Really reminds me of an old browser game called "Accelerator". Thanks for sharing the process of making the game! Some notes: - Would be nice to be able to start at a faster level than level 1 (though I do like how the gameplay loop can create more player engagement even in the early stages by letting you take more risk to collect more energy!) - Maybe draw distance should increase as speed increases? - Maybe make the health pickup visible through the obstacles (or is that already the case)? - Faster camera following at faster levels would be nice.

i've played a few slalom games that are designed to start the player off at a significantly faster speed while still being playable. they usually have less density in their obstacles to allow for enough time and space to dodge faster moving obstacles. this also allows for a variety of shapes and structures to speed through and some games even have various powerups and boosters.

if you ever make a remaster or sequel, here are some suggestions to make it even faster: * a little bit of distortion behind the ship, so it looks like the alien air is being warped from the raw speed * make the slowest dimension red, then hueshift it towards blue as you go faster, in reference to blueshift * some of the crystals being loose/fragile, so if you hit them they go flying off into the distance even though you still got hurt from it * alter the warp animation somewhat so there isn't an obvious screen square

Maybe I'm a freak, but I tend to play games in Windowed mode instead of Fullscreen , and I saw some issues. I only made it to, at most, Level 14, but that's because I kept trying to tab out to write down my thoughts and it made the game freak out. 1. Even if the games lets you freely resize the window when in windowed mode, it'd do good to still let people lock it at certain resolutions for ease of use. Additionally, because of how the graphics menu is designed, I have no way of knowing what my framerate actually is if I go into windowed mode. I would either add a FPS counter as a setting you can enable, or at least make the FPS limit a separate option from display resolution. 2. Additionally, the game's usage spikes like mad when I go into a different window. Despite the framerate visibly dropping when it loses focus, I saw my GPU go up to as high as 97% usage, even with RAM usage for the game staying at a few hundred MB. 3. When you pause the game, it immediately resizes the window to my full display resolution, even if still in Windowed mode. 4. When in windowed mode, the game doesn't lock your mouse cursor in any way, meaning it can leave the game window and interact with the rest of the stuff on my desktop and other windows. Meaning if I try to click to rotate my ship and its not in the window, the game goes out of focus and my GPU (An RTX 3070) effectively peaks. 5. If the game window loses focus, the game doesn't automatically pause, even though it is no longer tracking the mouse. This can easily make you crash into a wall or similar if you don't catch it in time. 6. Considering the purple noise appears on the borders of the game area, but do not give charge, I feel like that they either SHOULD give charge, or not have the "matter drive" even acknowledge it.

looks really good man. I love the aesthetic, and i really respect the simplicity. I like that literally anyone can play and see how well they do. I think i can even get my gf to try it If you're interested in some criticism: I think the ship blowing up could be a little more bombastic. Optimally, the broken ship would have physics and would bounce around. It would have the added benefit of looking cooler the faster you go. You did very well with the level transition, so it feels unbalanced that the death is underwhelming But honestly physics like that are probably too much work for what the game is Sound design: The whoosh sound isnt quite there, it sounds like someone blowing in your ear. I don't think it needs to be thrown out tho It's a really good base. I like that it sounds like what it looks like. So maybe lower the pitch? Actually just layering a lower windy/rumble sound might be good. You'd have to see what works tho And speaking of lowering the pitch, the sound when you hit something doesn't feel like it has enough impact. Again, it's a really good base Settings: Honestly, for me i had to lower the sensitivity down to 1. so i imagine it's still too high for some people. And clicking thru would be fine if it wasn't 10 different settings This one might be specific just to me but my pc is trash. even running at 1280x720 only gets me about 40 frames. I finally get the frames im looking for at 720x480, but it cuts off the amount of shields... honestly i'm not sure why you didn't put them on the ship And it's good practice to keep the menu's and ui's at native screen resolution even when you lower game resolution I hope you can see that i say what i say out of love. Overall i really like it. hard to say good things about it. you just nailed the core mechanics pretty well. the ship looks sick. i rate it very high for what it is. it's like a step below arcade for what it is (in terms of simplicity) but it's just as fun. So in that sense it's the perfect arcade game. Simple, easy, and fun.

Could you add vertical and diagonal lines so that the "roll" function becomes useful. Moreover, on the subject of the roll mechanic, maybe let the player fully roll, that is, not hard limit the roll to 90 degrees. Let the player do infinite barrel rolls while making sure the rotation stays at a limit but comes back to zero as the roll do a full 360. And thus, maybe let the rotation stay at what we put it to. Also, probably would need to create a keybind or an option to come back to the horizon, 0 degree angle, default state, or whatever you wanna call it. Finally, maybe also add a first person perspective, reduce a bit the easing on the camera. Although, that said, the game is really fun, engaging and addictive. The song slaps and the graphics even at the lowest, looks decent for the type of gameplay that plays.

Also thinking about proper fast nitro runs in something like Burnout Paradise and the like - but given the game's style, Torus Trooper came to mind first.

Can we make our own levels and vehicles.

Ok, so games with technically fast, but agonizingly long interstellar travel don’t count.

Well, if you REALLY want to make the fastest ever game, a good benchmark is Big Rigs: Over The Road Racing, which allows vehicles to go ~12.3 undecillion MPH. (Although, that's because the game is very poorly programmed and doesn't restrict reverse acceleration.)

Yeah agree, I think if this were a bigger game with distinct levels, I'd have a level which looks a bit like that.

Also that's cool you add a reverse control option, if i had a controller iv likely use it.

And so, did you the one who made music? fit the game verry well! ho annnnnnnnnd maybe use analog R2 L2 to sontroll the "fullness" of roll instead of fast clicking (don't have a gamepad now so sorry if this implemented already)
@IndieDevLab8 ай бұрын
@@Van_Darkhole Yeah on a controller the roll control is full analog. I did indeed make the music, thanks!
