There are so many modern options and tools Uri could use but he CHOOSES not to use them. Power tools for cutting and sanding but he opted hand tools and making a pedal powered jig saw. Laser engraver for doing all the intricate marking but he opted for hand engraving. Old school craftmanship demonstrating his artisan nature in every piece. This is why I love his videos. That, and his accent just adds something special.

Hey everyone! some people pointed out that I forgot to take the timezone under consideration, and they are totally correct. So I've check the solar accurate time and it turns out the timezone is about 20 minutes ahead of the sun in my area (12:19 instead of 12:00 for E.g.), so we actually got a much more accurate measurement than I though :)

Yes the accuracy of this as a time piece requires accurate knowledge of exact location.... Yet this can be used to navigate the world ... You just will never know your exact longitude due to time errors however latitude should be accurate.... You sail to the speck in the ocean you are heading for by sailing so that your are definitely west or east of the target when you reach the latitude of the target then you follow the latitude to the target.... Like if you walk from the road and your car into the woods where there are no trails.... When you return you error to the right of where your are certain the car is then when you reach the road you know that if you turn left the road will lead to your car.... Anyone can navigate the entire world with a girl map and they can create an astrolabe or sextant or quadrant or back staff with a few sticks and sail the world accurately quite easily once you know how

Keep inspiring, thanks for sharing your build. EDIT: I have made my own cutting fluid for drilling through steel using dish detergent, some water, and some strong oil. Just be careful as dish soap has salts in that can scratch up the surface and encourage corrosion. Of course if you're only using a drop or two then it shouldn't be a major issue, but you might want to wash the steel off after cutting rather than just rubbing it clean.

Incredible work! You're inspiring me to make my own, although I might have to start with wood. Note that when you're comparing a time reading from an astrolabe to standard time there are a couple of adjustment you need to make--1) use the "equation of time" to resolve the difference between local mean time and local apparent time, and 2) correct for the difference between local mean time and standard time based on how far east or west you are from your time zone meridian.

Amazing work! The comment about walking into a Medieval tavern and being burned as a witch - anyone in that era with one of these would either be a wealthy person or have a wealthy patron, and would be in one of two major occupations that used such devices, namely, either a scholar (studying the heavens, perhaps making astrological charts for important people), or a navigator at sea (therefore an officer, not just a sailor). One thing you would NOT do is flash it around to impress random people, since it would be stolen in short order.
