This is a canvas tool bag with leather tags and tether grommets. I installed a rope in the hem to make the bag opening more user friendly. It is made with 15 oz. cotton canvas.
I sew this bag predominately on a Juki 1508 unison feed Industrial Sewing Machine. amzn.to/2svzs0K
• I Make a Cool Canvas T... Here is where I mark lines on the handle halves. It takes two halves to make one handle.
• I Make a Cool Canvas T... This is how I iron the hem lines into the handle half prior to assembly.
• I Make a Cool Canvas T... Now just put two of the ironed handle halves together each hiding the raw edges of the other and sew them together.
Here is a cut list that you can download.

Thanks for this video. Just finished making one, though I only used ~10 oz cotton duck and a non-industrial machine (Pfaff 130). Still turned out great, the rope in the hem makes a big difference.

That is great, I love hearing that! I have made bags with 10 oz canvas too, it works great for that and lasts too. My backdrop is made from 10 oz canvas, its good. Glad you like the rope, it definitely steps it up a notch. Thanks

Hi Alexander, Great video thanks for posting it. I made a couple of the tool bags in military grade heavy duty canvas manufactured here in Australia. The tool bags turned out 10 inches wide by 16 inches long. The height was 12 inches reducing to 10.5 after I added the bolt rope at the top. I shortened the outside strap by 3 inches to allow for the bolt rope. Using a 5/8 inch seam allowance the tops of the pockets on the end lined up with the the pocket tops on the side. The end pockets in the video banner image are lower than the side pockets, I guess this was a prototype version of the bag. I was pretty much forced to sew the bottom corners using a triple feed 2 inch cylinder arm machine to achieve good tight seams on the bottom corners of the bag. The rest of the bag was done easily on a flatbed triple feed machine, like your Juki 1508. Not sure how one would go making this bag on a plain drop feed machine with thick canvas. I agree that everyone should have a Juki 1508 triple feed. Thanks Again Myles

That is a very informative comment. I gave it a thumbs up. Your project sounds great, you have made a great tool bag and who knows, you may have it for the rest of your life. Those bottom corners are definitely tricky. Again, I really appreciate you taking the time. Oh and prototype, yes, most of the things I make are. \HaHa/

I just finished this bag. I used 2 or so yards of 36” wide duck with some left over. I added inside pockets using the method in the video with the larger bag with leather handles. It went together fairly easy. I did make one modification to both end panel pockets(at least from what I saw in the video) by moving the pockets panel up higher with just enough of the bottom seam allowance to be sewn under the end sacrifice panel . I did slightly off set the tops of the end pockets with side pockets. You end up with quite a few layers to go through during the final assembly! Regarding the cut list provided: I would cut the inside straps an extra 6 inches longer or so to be sure the doubled up section of the handles can be sewn to the bag. I ended up having shorten the outside handles a bit from the ends to get them to attach properly. It carries well enough with the handles a few inches shorter. Awesome project. Great videos.

Damn it! Just as I was engrossed in this video, my wife came through the door unexpectedly. I had to insist that I had been trying to find a video of naked women, and that I had not actually searched for a sewing video. She thought it was hilarious. (Hope the joke doesn't offend anyone - that's what I really said to her). Thanks for a great video. I have recently been searching local tool shops for strong canvas tool bags. Have only found innovative but cheaply made alternatives so far. But if I leaned how to fix my wife's sewing machine...

Hi nice job, i see you went straight for the serger to tame that canvas, sure does get unruly quickly doesn't it. Surprised your serger table is just short of meeting up with the outfield table to be flush. I hear ya about people not wanting to pay the price. SEWING takes FOREVER and an 8oz spool of goretex is damn near $120 ! People don't realize that its not just thread. Let alone some material can be $20-30/yard. I make custom LED lights to specifically fit under the harp. Id be happy to send one along. I have one on my Juki 5550 and another on the Tacsew.

Good gosh, Alex, your machine, being that it's an industrial piece of machinery is phenomenal. For it to be able to get over the bulky areas as it does is awesome! I have a Husqvarna Viking and, although I've tried getting over some bulk areas when I sew, if I don't go slow, which I would normally do, sometimes the motor can't even handle it and it causes my needle to break. Nevertheless, this was a great showing of how you put this bag together and I loved especially the pockets technique. I'm going to try my hand at incorporating that particular feature into a tote bag made with 100% cotton. Thank you so much for sharing.

Without ongoing commentary I have little to no clue why you were doing, what you were doing nor the reason for doing it the sequence presented. Can I do this on an old Kenmore with a 1.2 Amp motor; maybe with a walking foot? I'm going to watch this several times to get the cut list then the order of construction. I need something super duty to carry my commercial diver's helmet and hoses, gauges, tools and spare parts. I want a ridged bottom with partial rigid sides to protect the helmet window. ... and; the option to carry it back pack style or tote I'll be threading a stainless steel cable through the top for anti theft measures. It's the little stuff that gets stolen and a big hard case won't get it when in cramped areas. This will be getting wet from time to time so it needs to resist environmental weather elements. The ability to keep a shape is very important however; I want to be able to remove the sides and bottom but it still needs to be kept with the bag. The bag should also clear the floor or deck by 3/4" to 1" with feet of some design.
@-ZELTHELD-

Excellent, would consider another bottom material, as the bright canvas will look ugly fast, especially on grass. Probably use a leather or a better waterproof pvc or nylon groundsheet, like for heavy tents.
@AlexanderDyer
@AlexanderDyer 6 жыл бұрын
That is one theory and some great ideas but I take issue with your opinion that it will look "ugly". I find the visual appearance and patterns of use to be interesting and often beautiful. Often things are desirable because they are rusty or have a patina. Have you noticed that most brand new jeans have replicated wear patterns? Try this video out of another bag I made with "dirt" as a feature. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKKrlXuLprx6gZI

Alexander Dyer Ney, you cannot compare wear marks on jeans or leather with grass and dirt stains on pure white canvas. Check out the Totepack Nr. 2 from Fjällräven. Nice leather bottom. However, of course this remains taste and that is often hard to agree one. Otherwise really nice bag.

Hi Alexander, love your video and your bag, I'm making bags and learning a lot. I bought a Juki LU1508N and I've had it a couple of months, I hope I made the right choice, I had the option to get a 1531 as well and it was so hard for me to decide between the two. The dealership said the only difference between the two was the 1508 had a little bit bigger bobbin and would sew heavier leather other than that they were basically the same. I bought my 1508 mainly for working with leather to make holsters, heavy weight belts occasionally and mainly bag making. I do have a question I hope you can help me with. When working with vegetable tanned cowhide, my presser foot is leaving marks on my leather and I have backed the pressure off the foot way back but still having the same problems even with chrome tanned leather. Can you give me any advice on how to fix this problem or do I need to change the type of leather I'm using. The point of buying this machine was so I didn't have to hand stitch anymore because I'm getting carpal tunnel in my right hand. Also, I notice you mention using a narrow foot, if you don't mind me asking, where can I find different feet and other accessories for my 1508 that will fit my walking foot machine and what kind of thread do you like best? Thanks for any help and advice you can give me. Tammy
@AlexanderDyer
@AlexanderDyer 7 жыл бұрын
Perhaps your foot has aggressive teeth? You might want a smoother set. Actually the bigger the feet the more they will distribute the pressure and that may also help. The more narrow foot might leave smaller marks though. I got my foot set at nick-o-sew. The Juki feet are the same as the Singer 111 and 211 so they are easy to get. Any major parts dealer can get you set up. Bonded Nylon or Polyester for heavy projects, I like polyester, it is a little more expensive but it will stand up to the sun. Buy good thread and you will never regret it, cheap thread will leave you cussing.
@tammyaltic2254
@tammyaltic2254 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for getting back with me so fast. Sorry about the typo in my previous message, I meant 1541 not 1531. Can I ask you what kind of feet you use with your bag making, I know a lot of ladies talk about a skinny foot, have no idea what they are talking about but they seem to like it but they also have a Juki 8700 and that wouldn't work for the 1508. I have the standard foot with the guard that came with the machine and I also ordered the right & left zipper foot and 5/32",1/4" cording/welting feet. I know when I backed the pressure way off the foot, the stitches started looking bad so I stopped. Should I have tried to tighten the tension when this happened? I'm scared to mess with the tension, the dealer that I got my machine from said they had it all set up for me to sew everything I told them about and I wouldn't have to mess with the tension but, I guess if I'm going to be sewing I need to get over that issue. I have call the dealer about my problem but their not getting back with me like I hoped they would so, that's why I'm trying to figure this out on my own. I have a knee lifter for my presser foot and that is so hard to use it seems really stiff, maybe it's because it's a new machine and needs time to loosen up a bit. Thanks again for your help and advice, I really appreciate it. Tammy
@AlexanderDyer
@AlexanderDyer 7 жыл бұрын
I like both the narrow and regular width feet. I don't like cheap parts though so I would advise to go for quality. Everybody is different so you gotta figure it out as to what you like best. If your foot pressure isn't strong enough the work will lift while the stitch is being made and that could explain the poor stitches you began to experience. You can adjust the placement of the knee lifter to fit your leg and that can make a big difference. This stuff takes work, practice and perseverance to develop the skills that it takes to get the most out of these machines. That is where the rubber meets the road.

Can you show us how you make the handles?
@AlexanderDyer
@AlexanderDyer 7 жыл бұрын
For now I put some more explanation in the description. I have had a few questions on the handles so I wanted to put it where more people can see it. I have also included time cuts so that you can see me doing what I am explaining. I will have another bag video coming soon and I will be making the same kind of handles in that video so hopefully I will answer your question. Thanks.

Looks amazing!! You are very talented! Have you ever had to use a gelatine or starch on canvas to make it stiffer and not floppy? I would appreciate if you had any tips on that!
@AlexanderDyer
@AlexanderDyer 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sarah, the grommets are for anything that you may want to attach with a girth hitch. It is an old method. I don't starch my canvas, it is 15 oz. , it is stiff because it is thick.

Very fast, and found it difficult to follow. Love the machine. Which Juki is it?
@AlexanderDyer
@AlexanderDyer 6 жыл бұрын
I know it is fast, if I were to play everything at regular speed the videos would be much longer. It is a judgement call to be sure. If you are interested in making one I encourage you to just go back in the timeline a couple of times and I think you will get it. I have actually seen a couple of other folks make this bag based on nothing more than this video. Like this guy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKSycnlndqmagpI Also check out this other video of mine where I make a similar bag and there is some voice over with a few more tips. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oquQlX9nhLB0nNU Juki 1508, it is in the description. I appreciate your comment.

One more feature not ever found in these bags or hard boxes. I want to clamp and lock the helmet to the bottom so if; it's rolled over the helmet won't be shifting and crashing around inside the bag. This will stabilize the bag too. The back pack feature also is never found in these when they're commercially made and to purchase my want list; I'd pay $200.+ for it and still not end up with a complete package deal.

Wow, that sounds cool. A very well thought out list of design elements. This 15 oz. canvas is pretty rigid and I put some rope in the top hem for stability. You better get an industrial sewing machine with walking foot. Triple Feed or Unison Feed . Singer 111, 211, Consew 206, Juki 563, 1541, 1508. A cylinder arm with compound feed would be good too. Good Luck.

Do you think this could be constructed with just a home sewing machine (with the sort of fake overlock stitch) and a consew 206rb5?

Beautifully made! I'm just about to upgrade to a bigger machine, a Juki 1510N-7. Also looking to get an overlock machine to simplify/speed up hidden seams. Any recommendations on particular options/capabilities to look out for with an overlock machine? I'm usually sewing cordura, sometimes with padding or thin foam.
@AlexanderDyer
@AlexanderDyer 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Juki is a good way to go. I love my 1508. This overlock is built for heavy material like denim and canvas. A lucky find on my part. I does shirting well too but I don't know about padding.

I really like this bag. However I feel that people that post videos to youtube are doing it to HELP others that don't know what/how to do it. It would have very helpful to me if you would have slowed down and gave instruction as to which piece you were sewing together. I can see you are very talented and I am very impressed with your bag, I just wish you would have given some oral instruction.( step by step) I had been searching forever to find video on how to make a small canvas gardening bag for my grandson with no luck. Your bags is exactly what I want only a smaller version. My husband did the math to help me with that! But being a beginner I just need more instructions. Anyhoo Thanks I hope I can figure it out after watching your video over and over.
