Quick announcement: this will be the second to last video from my gap year that I post on the channel! I'm headed to college quite soon and will begin to transition back to content primarily focused on my life at school (wohoo). I have one more video up my sleeve that I'll be posting later this month, but it's a bittersweet feeling to be closing this chapter and starting the next. So many incredible things are on the horizon! I hope you're all doing well (: Much love, Talk soon, Max

This message hits so hard Max. No matter where you are or your situation if you can find and surround yourself with the right people and create a positive environment you'll find happiness anywhere, it's not just dependent on what place is statistically "better". I'm really beginning to learn in my own life that it's possible to build the world you want to live in by surrounding yourself with likeminded people that share the same goal. Incredible work as always.

I totally agree. The more you travel, the more you realize that we are all the same. We do struggle and suffer for different things, human basic things. There might be some aspects of our country that we would like to change, but we still love it, we love where we come from and is up to us to make that change possible. P.S. Max, in the last shot, everyone can see the name and number of the girl. Let's hope no one pranks her.

Something that I’ve been struggling with for a long time is just accepting the fact that those mundane experiences won’t happen again. To often I find myself wishing I could be back at certain places, at certain times, with certain people. Like, I wish I could just travel back and time and be in those moments once again. And Im coming to the realization that that’s why I need to be so present in these moments. Cause those moments can never be recreated in the exact same way, And i think there really is something beautiful about that.

Seeing Max grow up with us is truly a one of a kind experiences I've had. Being his age and growing up with him, patiently waiting for his videos is a, let's be honest here, one of the smallest parts of my life, but it's there! Max, I don't want to be cheesy, but you truly are an inspiration to a big part of people and I think some of us can't thank you enough for what you've already done, what you're doing and what you will hopefully continue doing in the future. These small experiences are exactly what we love you for. And here I am, saying that you truly are representing the greater and better part of humanity and simply thank you for that!

I wanted to say all your gap year videos are so amazing! The experiences you have are so inspiring and I guess it feels so human, raw and real which is something that the world needs and appreciates. Tbh I feel like all your videos are great, I guess what I mean is it conveys your own human experience and the fact you have the courage to film yourself, self reflect and revealing them on YT is something you should be proud of, don't understimate your courage! Also congrats on going to college, from my experience as a current college/uni student, my advice is try and meet new people and study hard, ur gonna be great.😀 I'm glad you are enjoying these gap yeat experiences because these memories are once in a lifetime.

9:50 is a really interesting concept. the saying “you create your own luck” could be applied here in the sense that if you were to go to Denmark, the odds of you finding happy people may increase depending on your situation. It’s so easy to get caught in the cycle of what’s “the most” or “the best” but really, you personally have the single biggest impact on what people you end up around, however I think the environment you place yourself in is also a significant factor.

The message you tried conveying hits hard. Happiness is just a state of one's mind and not merely dependent on the place where you live or what your current situation is. These measurements they use to compare people’s lives in different nations don’t portray an actual image of how each individual’s life is. Being humans, we all face struggles and have our problems. Everyone should create their happiness and not rely on anyone to do so. Don't forget to make people smile as you never know what they're going through :)

By travelling to Guatemala, I realized that even people who live in shacks and who don’t have a lot are some of the happiest, most content, and culturally rich people. I think the biggest thing that creates happiness here is community, and this really shows that money and physical items aren’t the most important in life.

Honestly your videos Max are always on point and as a teenager myself i had a lot of problems after finishing high school and i decided to take a gap year too and it happened to be on the same time as you, so since then your videos really reaally helped me 💖, knowing that am not alone and that's okay cuz it's just the process of growing up . also this video especially coming from a country which's not much developed , we tend to compare ourselves with other countries a lot which leads mentally to a lot of self doubt , unhappiness and a lot of toxic comparision , but it's very true that happiness comes from ourselves first and from happy and kind people surrounding us to create our own little bubble so that we can live and get going . Thank you Max for sharing your life adventures with us , we support you and love you always ❤❤

I'm a college student in Vietnam. I love your videos which help me a lot get through my teenage years. Enjoying my times, facing to metal problems, feeling empty inside sometimes, learning, crying, accepting, failing, reaching hard to find myself. The most interesting thing of life is always moving, moving and moving around, forgeting about our pasts for a moment, stop having more future expectations, just being alive and grateful for our bodies, our lives but also moving forward. I hope u all the best, Max!!!! - from Viet Nam.

Maybe we are overwhelming ourselves with the thought of missing out and there is more to see, but maybe there isn't. Or even you may be missing out many things that happen in your surrounding bubbles (as you mentioned) while pondering over what happens there and this place... The beauty of doing ANYTHING that is special, or a one time event, is that you MUST live in the moment because after it happens, it’s over, and you can’t get that same sense of wonderment as in that very spot, that very instance. While everything we do is brief,if we take the time to explore, do, try, without hesitation, we build up memories that we will treasure all the rest of our days. Create experiences that no school can give us. And in the case of you traveling to so many places, you get to see how parts of the of world live, and appreciate their lifestyle, from what you have. I wish I could make that journey again. So much more out there to see! ❤️❤️

This might be quite a bit weird.. But on the last monologue I kinda thought you'd be the perfect friendship match with someone I know haha. I have a friend who's Pennsylvania born and raised but half German and living here since 2015. And the thing is your way of thinking, the creative interest in videos, the topics and also your upbringing and the type of person your mom seems to be for you literally matches him and his way of life by like 95%. Like the little insecurity about things mixed with great consciousness about everything you come across, seemingly having great interest in people and cultures and sociology and also your own mental health and enjoying in-depths conversations... It feels like you're his little brother or best friend hahahah. I know it's weird, but it just struck me xD

I find myself very close to the thoughts and refelctions you share, I have a question for you: you talked about knowing you'll never gonna go back there realistically but it feels nice knowing that you were so present there and in that moment. How do you manage to actually be present in those moments? I find it super hard to enjoy every moment i live, it's something that pervades me constantly, this feeling of not having been 100% present in the things i've done. It would be amazing to know your point of view about this. Also the travel anxiety you talk about, I always feel this urge to comeback at every place or good experience I have, it's like I can never get enough of them, how did you solve this?

Happy is so relative. And that happiness index is useless. And that struck me too when I did my first solo trip to Sri Lanka back in 1998. And this retired doctor drove this little bus and showed the sights. And I saw all these kids in their white school blouses smile and waive. And I said: “its incredible how happy they can be whilst being so poor.” And he said: “poor? Thats a really European thing to say. These kids have, food, shelter, education and healthcare. What more is there?” And I was like… yeah what more is there? Food, roof, freedom and health are the ingredients for happiness. I know a lot id wealthy people who aren’t happy. I saw a lot of “unhappy” people in Denmark too. People who rather want to live in my country. And frankly I wouldn’t want to live in Denmark, eve though The Netherlands and Denmark are very similar - perhaps thats what it doesn’t draw me as a destination. It’s absolutely a great country, but to me when im there it’s as though I haven’t left The Netherlands.

I think people are just looking for the easiest way. They can't find happiness in small things, comparing their lives with the lives of others. It's easier to say that somewhere out there someone lives better than to find pieces of happiness where you are right now. Comparing our lives and the lives of others, we stop noticing all the beautiful things that happen to us. Perhaps people are accustomed to ordinary things in their countries and they are looking for something new and interesting in others but they forget that until you begin to appreciate where you are now and what is happening to you, you cannot REALLY appreciate it anywhere else. Because if you were born and lived in a place where you now think people are happier, then you would also think that this is just an ordinary place and would not appreciate it (I hope you understand what I wrote because I'm not good in English)

Not sure if I’ll have the answer to that anytime soon but appreciating where you live now and surrounding yourself with the right people is the way to go. That can make any place great if you ask me. Here a fact. I live in a big Big city. And I've been at a city on the coast 500 kilometers away. I fell in love directly. After I was back home I thought about moving there for living. Then I opened Instagram and by accident I saw a profile from a girl living there. After a while I realised that she is not happy living there. She went on holidays to Berlin and was more fascinated. And since then I realised that it is human nature. We all looking for happiness. But tbh it is so simple yet. Make the best what you have :)

oh hell nah, I lived in Sweden for more than 6 years. and trust me it's the most depressing country. I have been in many many country in my life and lived in the different countries for some time. But sweden was so depressing and it's actually known for one of the most depressing countries where many take their own lives. I've been so depressed in Sweden that I actually now live in Germany and i have been here 2 month already and I can already see the difference and how my mental health have been changed. and yes I do agree that the people around you have a big big role in how you feel and so on, but in Sweden actually another thing is that it is really hard to make friends. Especially if you are like from another country, have black hair or skin, you get allot of hate. And me myself actually I have been through allot of mobbing and even physical abuse. Because I was not like them. And yes you may say I had a bad luck and went through that, but that's not bad luck, if it was about bad luck, there would not be alot of other people that go through that, Sweden is good at hiding some realities I think. I know many that took their own lives because they could not go through the hate they get in school or even outside. Not even one year ago one little boy died because his friend physically abused him. This is not right.

I've spend a semester in Sweden and totally agree with what you said about the difficulty of making friends in Sweden. People are very reserved and not really interested in you if you're from another country.
