My first time watching Firestarter (1984). What a great story! The special effects weren't bad either (mostly lol). It is a product of the 80s in every way, but it was still a compelling film. I do kind of want to watch the remake now... I hope you enjoyed my Firestarter movie reaction & commentary

Please maybe look at Dolores Claiborne next in your King journey? It has Kathy Bates in a roll that was specifically written for her after she won an Oscar for Misery, but gets so much less recognition. Far less than it and her deserves!

Nice, I especially like Forbidden Planet and Alien Resurrection (I'm assuming you have seen the other films). I can't believe I was @16-17 when this came out, I remember going to the pictures with my GF and quite a good time watching it. Man, time flies !! I think I prefered wargames tbh. But still fun. You should probably stay away from Maximum Overdrive, I like it for the ACDC soundtrack and I like the story and effects personally but I doubt it would do well in terms of views... Although your reation might be interesting to watch lol.

Decent film. Great electronic score. It’s one of Tangerine Dream’s best soundtracks IMO. (There’s a limited edition re-release on vinyl and CD available now...which I’d ordered, and just received.) The whole thing is nostalgic for me, since it was my introduction to the band. Their studio albums and soundtracks from the 70’s to the mid 80’s, were something special.

One thing, probably out of many, that was in the book and not the movie, was that when her dad used his powers it caused him pain. Headaches and the nosebleeds. But her dad notices at the farm that she has an opposite reaction to using hers. She seems to be have pleasurable experience while pyrokineting

You doing this film makes me so absolutely ecstatic! It’s one of my very favorite DB films. I like it more than ET. In the book John was JOHN RAINBIRD. He was a Native American, and believed in absorbing power through that background. That’s why he wanted to kill Charlie himself. To absorb her Godlike power into his spirit.

Charlie's hair blowing back when she used her powers is kinda a throwback from a few years before. In 1978 there was a movie called ''The Fury'' about a government agency controlling children & teens with powers. And when ever they would use their powers, the wind machines would be activated. That's why growing up, I thought they were the same movie. But ''The Fury'' was written by John Farris and of course this is based of King's novels. And this is in a long line of stories King wrote about children with telekinesis. From ''Carrie'', ''The Shining'', this story, followed by ''The Dark Tower'' series. It is said that all writers have a certain idealize themes in their stories, and Stephen King's is kids who can blow your head up real good.

A bit of trivia: In the novel, Charlie and Irv Manders went to Rolling Stone, not NYT with the story because they thought there would be less of a chance for the story to get buried by the shop. Manders wife played by Louise Fletcher also played Nurse Ratched in the movie, "One flew over the cuckoo's nest." The actor who played Dr. Wanless also played the Mentat Thufir Hawat in the movie Dune the same year as Firestarter. Also, Andy never lost his powers, he was conning the Shop so he would have the opportunity to turn the tables on them.
@Kayjee17
@Kayjee17 2 жыл бұрын
Andy DID lose his powers for a while in the book, and they were at The Shop for about 6 months vs the short time in the movie. Andy couldn't use his powers at first because of the drugs the government doctors got him hooked on. Later on, he had a flash of intuition (like he did about his wife's death in the book) that Charlie was in danger, so he used his power on himself to get rid of his addiction to the medication and after a few days his power came back. Also, Irv Manders wasn't with Charlie when she went to Rolling Stone Magazine. She left them in the middle of the night after she had a precognition that government agents were coming to the farm looking for her. The book ends with her going to the offices of Rolling Stone with an orange in one hand and a paper bag full of change in the other, showing that she could use her powers to get change from pay phones and vending machines to support herself and she was going to finish "burning it all down" by exposing what was done to her family.

I read the book for Firestarter and I can tell you that Rainbird's attraction to Charlie is even more unsettling in the book. Now that I think about it, the book overall is more unsettling. But the movie does a good job of condensing the material and making it palatable for the times.

2:35 Charlie was the telekinetic. Her dad had the sort of 'hypnotic suggestion' ability. In the book, she was trying to fiddle with the payphone telekinetically, to get it to spit out some money but when she focused, the 'big power' in her head slipped loose and she had to push it away from her...and it landed on the soldier's leg, because she had been thinking about him being mean to his girl..

Heat actually creates a draft. the higher the heat, the higher the draft, so the wind on her when she's using her power is actually pretty believable. If you want to see some fun ways that heat creates drafts, check out fire whorls :D i always loved the soundtrack of this movie, but i'm a child of the 80's so that might have a lot to do with it lol. This is still my favorite version of this story. Not sure if you knew but it's based on a Steven King novel :)

I love King's various explorations of psychic powers. It's a pervasive theme in his work, for good and ill, but when he uses it surrounding strong topics, it really hits. The Shining, Dead Zone, and Firestarter are all top of the King adaptation list with me. For a spiritual successor to Firestarter - Push, with Chris Evans and Djimon Honsou.

Especially since I've read the book and am a definite fan of Stephen King, I have been a constant reader since I was 12 and I'll be 40 this year. Plus, even as a child Drew Berrymore was really interesting to watch in any film. Cat's Eye included, that'd be another King film she was the star of.

Man, I just love this movie! It just so nostalgic for me, having grown up a good portion in the eighties, it really scratches that nostalgia vibe. The feel and the set pieces and design, very relative of the era. And the music by Tangerine Dream, one of The Godfather’s of electronic music. Did you know Tangerine Dream made the soundtrack without even seeing the film first? Crazy how they caught the vibe so well.

I enjoyed this movie, even though I wish her father had lived. The effects/fire bombs fit perfectly with her abilities and didn't seem over the top or not enough. As far as her hair getting blown around before she started a fire, I thought it also fit with her abilities because it shows the energy she is harnessing. I will say that as cool as it would be to have super powers I definitely wouldn't want to be a Firestarter. I'd want to fly🧚‍♀️

the german electronic music band tangerine dream provided the film score. they had had a great success with the score for the coming of age comedy "risky business" in 1982. there was something of a vogue for electronic music scores in the 1980s, probably started by the film "chariots of fire" (1981), with its famous theme by the greek electronic music composer vangelis.

I love this film, I liked the soundtrack in the sense that it DID date it, I see that more as historical/nostalgic settings. I think Rainbird played by George C. Scott is one of the most under rated villains out there. Such an amazing actor playing a complete and total psychopath but one with some murderous power philosophy. It's all so horribly dark but wonderfully performed. Another brilliant reaction and one I was waiting for since I saw it was coming up :) I highly recommend The Dead Zone starring Christopher Walken, another King adaption from the same era, a few big names from movie history dotted about. I enjoy it about as much as Firestarter just for quite different reasons.

While the 1984 version of "Firestarter" won't make anyone's top ten lists, it's still not a bad way to pass a couple of hours. It's got a solid cast and pretty much sticks to King's novel. However, the 2022 version is another story. It's spectacularly inept. Fails on every level. Makes a ton of changes that bring absolutely nothing to the table story wise. I was not surprised to see that the script for the 2022 version was written by the same hack who wrote "Halloween Kills." How does this guy manage to keep getting work?

The movie is reasonably faithful to the book. Some subplots are left out and some characters are presented different than they should be, but it gets the main stuff right. One funny change that sticks out to me is at the end. In the book, Charlie turns to Rolling Stone magazine to get her story out, not the NYT. I'm guessing they made the change because the Times has that sign that is both iconic and easy to film

The tension is real, because the fire is real. There was no CGI used here. One of my favorite movie reviewers gave the newest movie a "Dogshit" rating. Fun Fact: It was Art Carney's idea for his character to wear a hearing aid since he personally needed one because he couldn't hear. Director Mark L. Lester thought it was a great idea and used his suggestion. Bonus Fact: Firestarter was the first Stephen King novel published in a limited edition. King later regretted this decision because of the copies' preciousness and unavailability.

Drew was such an adorable little girl and had quite a start to her career, but then she dropped off for a while. then she came back and had written her autobiography called "Little Girl Lost". I think that she had started getting into drugs around the time she was 12? Cat's Eye was another Steven King movie with Drew in it; a collection of short stories around a central theme.

That 80s "synth" sound is a double edged sword in these 80s flicks. You're right that it comes off a little shmaltzy in Firestarter. On the other hand, it's become iconic in movies like Beverly Hills Cop. Peter Weir uses synth score in Witness and Dead Poets Society (which I know you have a very moving reaction video for on your channel). Both are excellent films, with captivating and haunting scores.

They started out as a rock band back in the 60’s, but eventually became one of the premiere pioneers of electronic music. In the early 80’s, they started doing film soundtracks. This one is not their best, but still had a couple of outstanding tracks IMHO. Their first soundtrack gig was for a film you’re going to be reacting to soon, “Sorcerer”. The interesting thing about that is the fact that they scored the movie without ever seeing a single frame of the film. I’ll be interested to see how you feel about that score. It’s quite a bit creepier than this film’s score. Other films they’ve scored include “Miracle Mile”, “Flashpoint”, “Near Dark”, Ridley Scott’s “Legend”, “Risky Business” and my favourite (from the standpoint of TD soundtracks), Michael Mann’s “Thief”. They also did the theme for a short lived TV show called “Streethawk” (basically “Knight Rider”, but with a motorcycle instead of a car).

Except it's not a great score, and it's used in a cheesy way by the director. Tangerine Dream is all right, but they were hardly the greatest ever and were just as apt to have duds on their albums and film scores as anybody. "Risky Business" was a great soundtrack from them in '84 (even if they were ripping off Steve Reich); "Firestarter" was not.

@@TTM9691 agreed. When I said there were a couple of decent tracks on this soundtrack, I meant 2… The rest is generic dreck. As is a lot of the soundtrack work I made mention of. “Near Dark” for instance has only 1 decent track. Even though I’m a fan, doesn’t mean I can’t distinguish their bad material from the good stuff.

I went through a big Stephen King book phase back in the eighties and was excited every time a new movie came out based on a book I had read. This wasn't my favorite...it came across as a second-rate version of Carrie, and the movie pretty much followed suit. I just saw it that one time in the theater, and then again with you here, and yes-- it definitely has that 80's cheesiness to it with a horrible synthesized soundtrack. It's too bad, because it has a really stellar cast and the effects do appear to hold up fairly well. Watching this video did make me think of fixing some barbecue this evening...

It's just so sad the people in the Shop couldn't see what was plainly right in front of them. A little girl who could light ice on fire with her mind? Showy. Maybe even spectacular at times, but she's clearly a one-trick pony. But that "Push" power of her father's. It's versatile, it's effective, and it doesn't potentially light up the nuclear threat board at the Pentagon. If the Shop people had any sense, they'd be trying to cultivate the father, and keep the little girl too doped up to burn anything. (And the book title would be "Pusher," of course.)

In the book she potentially had the ability one day to crack the planet in two like a plate in a shooting gallery. The lot program had other people with powers, like 3 i think who didnt die in the experiment. One went insane and sits in a little room in the shops maui compount where he will stay till he dies. Another comitted suicide, and the other had like a heart attack or anyurism. When theyndid the experiment they gave EVERYBODY lot six, there was no water, and whyneveryone was tripping from the lsd component of lot 6 they had shop agents dressed as teacher aids give tests to see emerging powers, like moving vlocks or dominoes with vickis moms mind not her hands. The whole program was just to give people powers. Problem was that it would wear off, but some retained some powers tho they were weak. Andy and vickies chromosomes dna were altered somehow and when they had a baby she might be called a mutant or divergant. Prob was when her parents used their powers it hurt them physically (nosebleeds), but charlie being born inherantly with them it didnt hurt her, quite the opposit, she actually feels good when she uses them, i think it was referred to like a tickle, when she burned the farm guys she started to go into a kinda daze and andy saw that she had a dreamy look and a small smile, thats when he was scared to realize she enjoyed it. Oh n charlie had pyrokenisis, telekinetic, and precog powers, i loved how she was kinda like a swiss army knife lol. Dam i love this movie and tangerine dream. Just so you know....even in the 80s it felt cheesy! I'm actually enjoying it a little better now, because of the kitsch value. It's not King's all-time greatest novel ever, but it's not "cheesy"! That said: what a cast! I totally forgot! Art Carney? Louise Fletcher? George C. Scott? Martin Sheen? Heather Locklear? I forgot about all of 'em! Obviously Hollywood was sparing no expense! Too bad they didn't hold out for a better lead actor! :P (he was ok) And the music, as you say, is just the pits. Drew is great, though! And the story is great. Haven't seen this since 1984, in the theater! Thanks for making me revisit it! The wind....hahahaha!

YES...one of my favorite. Also one of Drew's earliest movies and she's great in it at such a young age. Yes with no CGI back then they had to use real fire of course so it all had to be done with real pyrotechnics and careful camera angles. Then you add in child actors and it was difficult to say the least. There's a great making of the movie documentary out there. It's not exact to the novel but they did get all of the most important parts in my opinion. The fathers powers are being squelched by the drugs they are giving him. And John wants to kill her while looking into her eyes because he believes he will be able to steal her power when she dies according to an indian belief. The finale really was an amazing feat of special effects and pyrotechnic incredibleness. Now I always feel it doesn't make sense when people watch an old movie and call it cheesy...when it's just a difference what was the style of the time. Most movies of that time had those same attributes back then so it's not something that should be considered a fail but a trait of movies of the time. The same with the soundtrack. That was very common for a soundtrack back then. And I have to laugh at your criticism of the hair blowing. How do you know that someone with Pyrokinesis wouldn't have blowing hair? How many real Pyrokinetics have you seen in real life. I bet it would look exactly like that. LOL. Anyway...great reaction. Next you should do CHRISTINE. Another great Steven King film.
