My first time watching Misery! Kathy Bates was AMAZING! What happened to this girl to cause her to.... well... so many things! I kind of love how they never explained her reasoning for any of the events or clippings. I hope you enjoyed my Misery (1990) movie reaction & commentary

One of the best Stephen King adaptations out there. Easily earns a 9/10 from me. Sheriff Buster and his wife is easily a highlight of the movie. Director Rob Reiner went out of his way to make him and his wife rich characters. I honestly would have love to see more of him solving crimes. Fun Fact: James Caan and Kathy Bates clashed over their acting methods. Caan believed in as little rehearsal as possible. Bates, with her theater background, was used to practicing a lot. When she commented to Rob Reiner that Caan was not attempting to relate or listen to her, Reiner told her to use that frustration toward her character.

Kathy Bates won the Oscar for her role in this movie Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Warren Beatty, Ryan O'Neal, Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford, Paul Newman and Robert DeNiro were almost cast as Paul Sheldon. The scene where she breaks his ankles was on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments. Saw this film on CBS Sunday night Movie in 2003, didn't know what it was about, then I learned its about an author, believed dead after a car accident, is rescued by an obsessed fan, whom forces him to write a new book just for her, or he'll face the consequences.

_Misery_ is about the insanity that fans can get into. It was a cathartic story about the crazy people that can latch onto famous folks. The great Harlan Ellison wrote a story about such fans, what he called "psychic vampires", who can suck their idols' lives away with their grasping and their entitlement. It had the perfect title: _Try a Dull Knife._ (Harlan was a master at titles.)

In the book, he burned a stack of blank paper with the title page on top. He'd actually saved Misery's Return under the bed, and had it published. It was widely regarded as his best work, and ignited (ha, ha) the popularity of the series. He reconciled himself to the fact that was always going to be writing Misery, but that that wasn't so bad now. Also in the book, Paul's injuries would have kept him from ever walking again without a very severe limp, but Annie hobbling him (cutting off half his feet with an axe) enabled him to be fitted with prosthetics to walk with a cane after physical therapy. This was directed by Rob Reiner. Please watch another Rob Reiner film based on a Stephen King story, Stand By Me.

I have said this in other videos, the move is pretty tame compared to the book. Annie cut off one of his feet and cauterized it with a blow torch, cut off one of his thumbs with an electric knife and put it on a cake like a candle, and ran over the cop by driving a lawn mower over his head.!! That being said, I though it was one of the best movies adapted from a Stephen King novel.

Trivia for you. You recently watched Casablanca and the Maltese Falcon. In this film, Paul Sheldon's agent was played by Lauren Bacall ... wife of he late Humphrey Bogart. It all comes full circle. :) The African Queen is a great film to see Bogart as an "older" actor (he died rather young from all that smoking). And finally, Bogie and Bacall acted quite a bit together. Check out Key Largo.

This was one of the few times I had read the book BEFORE seeing the movie. I had just finished it when the trailer for this came out, so I made sure to see it. I have never seen a more faithful adaptation of a book - not even another King movie - and so I think I was even more able to appreciate Kathy Bates' & James Caan's performances. I can't say when I read the book, that I had a clear idea of what Paul Sheldon looked like, but once James Caan read through the first couple of scenes, he became the detail on silhouette and Paul Sheldon came to life. And Kathey Bates... She should've taken the Oscar for this, no question!! She was exactly how I pictured Annie Wilkes. And her delivery of some of the most nonesensical lines, yet somehow her delivery gave them meaning and weight, as things like the 'cocka-doodey car' could have easily come off as camp, or cartoonish. I expected Annie to be a bit older, but otherwise - spot on. And the Sherrif and his wife were a true delight...until Annie. :( Anyways, LOVE the channel. Subscribed & Liked! Can't wait for your next one.

In a special feature on a collector's edition DVD of Misery, forensic psychologist Reid Meloy states that Annie suffers from bipolar disorder, severe borderline personality disorder with schizoid, and has schizotypal and obsessive compulsive features. Basically, she was just cray. Born that way. I thought it was amusing that King originally planned to have the pig kill/eat Sheldon, and have Annie bind his final draft of Misery's Return in Sheldon's skin. That sounds like a King novel. lol King said Sheldon, "turned out to be more resourceful" than he originally planned. So, he lived.

Solid reactions - one of the best King adaptations - and again Rob Reiner directing (he also did the well done STAND BY ME by King) - with a truly unsettling turn by Bates who justifiably won the Best Actress Oscar as Annie - one of cinema's great psychotic villains up there with Norman Bates and Hannibal Lecter. Kudos to Caan for his out of his wheelhouse comfort zone of being a macho tough guy and showing his vulnerability.

The way she responded to the fire in the BBQ pit when he threw a match on the book: What do you expect? 4. In the book Annie chops his feet off (not just hobbling him). William Jones - 6. isn't entirely true. Stephen King wrote the original book based on his own drug addiction. Annie Wilkes was a metaphor for the cocaine he took and how he felt imprisoned by it and he based Paul Sheldon on himself and how he got through feeling trapped by the drugs when he was writing his earlier works.

@@williamjones6031 - You're right in that he wrote it based on an internal fear, but it wasn't as literal as you suggested in your original comment. He didn't have an internal fear of an actual human "number one fan" who was obsessed with him and would kidnap him. The "number one fan" was the cocaine that he was addicted to, which is again what Annie Wilkes represented.

I am writing this just previous to watching your reaction. I can only hope you enjoy this not only as much as I enjoyed watching this movie, but the repete enjoyment I have gotten dozens of times watching others reactions to it. My only problem is I can only give one thumbs up to you reacting to it. Enough with the emotional blather, lets get on to what you thought ....

Paul Sheldon was an extremely hard role to cast, as Rob Reiner deliberately wanted a "tough guy" actor to contrast the extreme vulnerability he's in, and just about every such actor he went to (including Warren Beatty, Robert De Niro, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Gene Hackman, Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, Robert Redford, and Bruce Willis) turned it down because they were worried it would hurt their image. But luckily he also went to James Caan, who actually was willing to humble himself to take the role, and the rest is history.

Boy do I know a thing or two about being a hostage in writing. I can't watch Misery without the movie reminding me of an ex that wanted to self insert herself into everything I've ever written. Whenever I disagreed she would become distant or just outright become emotionally vicious. At one point in the relationship I committed some form of career suicide and lost opportunities and relationships because of it. Almost ended my own life in the aftermath. She turned my life outside down. The only thing missing was having both my feet bludgeoned as well. But I'm mostly okay now, apart from some very harsh trust issues. It took a very long time to just get a sliver of a recovery from it.

You know, I really enjoyed your reaction! The only thing that was a drawback was at the beginning when you nearly spoiled the movie...twice. What I mean by that were two highly educated guesses that turned out right. However, as one reacting you must train yourself to REFRAME from saying those those things because your audience knows before you know and it takes away from their viewing enjoyment. Overall, a very good job.

I love the story telling aspect (as well as Kathy Bates' performance) of this story, but I am a bit tired of S. King's stories because they have become predictable, even formulaic. I would like to see Hollywood veering away from King and more in the John Saul/Robert McCammon/Larry Niven direction. John Saul's novel 'The God Project' would make a fantastic film, as wood, Robert McCammon's Boy's Life, Swan Song, and of course his two monster stories: They Thirst and the werewolf in WW2 action horror 'Wolf's Hour'. As for Larry Niven, he has the award-winning 'Ring World' saga, and the Tales of Known Space--including the GIL Hamilton stories like 'Patchwork Girl'.
