Fox Force Five is back! Sort of. We follow ____ on her mission of revenge and I could have never predicted what this movie would bring to the table. Surprise at every turn and probably the most blood I’ve seen in a movie. I hope you enjoyed my Kill Bill Volume 1movie reaction & commentary

As I understand it, you are basically correct. Tarantino could not get away with the amount of blood and gore he wanted to show and keep from getting an NC-17 rating...so to keep his R rating, he used segments of black and white film, and used animation for O-Ren's origin story. Also, scalping is removing the hair OVER the skull...so The Bride was being very extra with the amount of skull she took off! LOL

Agreed! I’m not really a huge fan of over the top violence, but it more or less worked for me here. The black and white probably did help me though 🤣

If I remember correctly, her brain is fully in tact after being scalped... skullcapped... skulled... capped? Skullped! That's it, skull + scalped 😄😁 But not a shred of brain matter - not one brain cell - had been taken off the top, even though it was obviously a clean, straight swipe that took off her skullcap. 😅😂 I'm sorry, I just find it funny that such a flat cut across the top of the cranium left her brain whole, and wholly unharmed.

There is the version on KZbin which is the two movies edited together properly, using the Japanese versions visuals. It’s called ‘kill bill: the whole bloody affair’ and all the parts that were black and white are in their original colour. It’s really good.

It's really good but could have done with some editing. Chapter 4 about meeting Hattori Hanzo could have been a short scene, it drags. Volume II has even more scenes that could have been cut. Sometimes Quentin's fanboyism gets in his own way by putting Sonny Chiba in for stuff that could have been left out or having Bill talk about comic books in Volume II.

"One more thing, Sofie... is she aware her daughter is still alive?" BOOM! That's how you do a cliffhanger!! 😎 Fun Fact: Despite being bleeped out in the film, the name of The Bride (Uma Thurman) is revealed on her plane tickets. Batter-Up Fact: The shot where the Bride splits a baseball in two with a samurai sword was done for real on the set. It was done by Zoë Bell, Uma Thurman's stunt double. Boom! Head Shot! Fact: When Chiaki Kuriyama (Gogo) was shooting the scene where she flings her ball and chain out, she accidentally hit Quentin Tarantino on the head as he stood by the camera. Casting Notes Fact: Quentin Tarantino originally intended to cast a Japanese actress to play O-Ren Ishii, but before casting began, he saw Lucy Liu's work in Shanghai Noon (2000) and immediately changed O-Ren into a Chinese-Japanese-American, so that Liu could play the part.

The thing with blood fountaining during the sword fights is something that was common in old samurai films. It goes back to an early black and white samurai movie where a blood squib was prepped wrong. The scene called for the lead character to slash another samurai with his sword, killing him, and have a reasonable amount of fake blood spurt out as he fell. Because it wasn't rigged correctly, the squib ended up gushing out this tremendous fountain of fake blood. Instead of reshooting the scene, they left in. It was ridiculously over the top, but it looked cool. Eventually other directors started to imitate it, to one degree or another, in many of their own samurai films. Think of it as a kind of samurai version of the Wilhelm scream. Including it in the Japanese fight scenes here was a sort of homage to that.

That’s ridiculously awesome. As a semi random side note we used to have a group of Japanese kids from a preschool come to our pumpkin patch every October and they were always my favorite customers. Super polite and clean and neat. And they were the only group who had their kids line up their shoes out of the walking path before going to play on the bouncy houses. Most kids (and parents unfortunately) just left them wherever and I was always moving them out of places people would trip over them but these guys had their kids trained to politely line their shoes up out of the way before running off and it was the cutest thing. Nicest and most well behaved 3-4 year olds I ever dealt with 😂

With the black and white scene, I would like to point out that this is not the case for every country. In Japan the age ratings aren't as strict so the film over there has that scene in full colour, I own a Japanese copy of the dvd where it is like that. It's incredible.

This was made with the intention of being like a early 1970’s Kong fu movie, the old spaghetti westerns, so the music fits the style. Even the “Feature Presentation” at the beginning was of that time period. Quinten and Uma wrote this together while filming “Pulp Fiction”. You still need to see Tarantino’s “Four Rooms”. Be prepared to laugh your buttocks off!! 🤣

So "Jackie Brown" is Quinton Tarantino's adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel "Rum Punch", and now that you've watched that, it would probably be worth it to check out the 1998 Steven Soderbergh film "Out of Sight", which adapts Leonard's novel of the same name. Leonard would often have supporting characters he introduced in one novel show up as supporting characters in other novels, and this is a tradition that the two film adaptations try to invoke.

You get more information from Volume 2, but yes, Uma was Bill’s lover, despite the thirty year age difference between them. When she discovers she’s pregnant she leaves him to protect her baby as she no longer wants to be an assassin. She attempts to marry the first man that comes along before the baby is born. Bill tracks her down on her wedding day and with the help of his brother Bud and the VIPER squad, massacre everyone in attendance (including Samuel L. Jackson’s character who was originally supposed to be his character Jules five years after Pulp Fiction) and put Uma in a coma for four years.

2:16 oh yes, it is definitely an interesting song. Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down), written by Sonny Bono for Cher. At first, I was very upset that they didn't use the original version by Cher, but after awhile I realized... yeah, this more haunting version fits than Cher's first recording from the '60s, which is more upbeat-ish. But he could've used her '80s haunting rock ballad... which is, by far, the BEST version of the song - other than the live version from her farewell tour.

I can't see anyone else doing the part justice with the necessary toughness and vulnerability. I like the bride's code of honor just as Bill stated in the beginning when he told Elle not to poison her and why the bride is not shy to let them know she is coming she isn't going to dishonor herself or them and catch them unawares or defenseless. These 2 movies were actually filmed as ONE movie. During editing however, Tarantino refused to cut out all of the great scenes. And nobody would buy a 5 hour film. True this would have been NC-17 if all in color but another reason is they used every last drop of fake blood for like a 500 mile radius. The Japanese cut of the film stays in color and half the shots of blood is just water. Also, the American cut plays the scene as 95% serious. The Japanese cut involved more comedy.

I hear some folks say that part 1 and part 2 are simply a convenient division of a single film, but I disagree. The tone, or 'framing'(?) of the second is different... The first I'd characterize as an homage to Martial Arts films coming out of Hong Kong around the 1970s, while the second feels to me much more like one of the Westerns of that time or the decade before.

Don't go into part two expecting as much craziness. It's still amazing, but it's more about the story than action.

If I remember correctly I think I actually said part one had the action and part two had the story 😅

I believe this might have been the first Tarantino movie I watched fully (I'm fairly certain I'd seen parts of Reservoir Dogs on tv but I was young and didn't pay too much attention) and while I don't think it's his best film nor is it my favorite now (both those spots are filled by Inglourious Basterds for me), it holds a special place. I really appreciated how the female characters all kicked ass without being heavily oversexualized for the male gaze. That was such a rare thing for movies at the time, if two women fought each other it was always orchestrated that they both looked pretty, that the fight looked sexy, and that bothers me. None of that goes on here. When these women fight, they fight hard, they get just as hurt, messy, and sweaty as male action protagonists do. None of the moves they do are designed nor shot in a way to show off the actresses bust or butts either. I was immediately attached to that, even though at the time I was disturbed by just how violent it was. Now that I'm older and have rewatched it(as well as unfortunately seen a lot more real life violence), I think the violence is just over the top enough that it's cartoonish. It no longer bothers me.

To me, the foot thing is QTs commentary on the way other movies focus on T&A. Arbitrarily focusing on a body part and concocting reasons to put the camera near them is silly, and he is pointing it out. I think if it was really a foot fetish, he would be embarrassed to keep doing it after he’s been called out about it so often. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think he is too good at what he does, everything is so intentional, I can't imagine him screwing up his films by doing something with as little meaning as a personal kink.

The whole Fox Force Five element that fans latch onto is a bit forced. Other than the fact that there are five on the team, there are no similarities between Fox Force Five and the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. FF5 are supposed to be all women, DVAS is not. FF5 are all secret agents not assassins and we don’t have descriptions or names of FF5 that Mia mentioned that match up well at all. Tarantino may have used FF5 in premise as an inspiration, but if he did, he then went and changed every aspect of them other than the number of team members.

it went black and white cos the movie was looking at an NC-17, so QT cut nothing, just made it black and white and it got an R.
