meh. the main thing that makes subnautica terrifying is the ambiance. so getting rid of any music and it being much darker under water but not pitch black. that alone would make the game like 10 times scarrier. also no jumpscares. passively running into the hostile seal life would be enough. oh yeah and no map. if you know where you are going then its a lot less scarry. idk maybe a manual map you hold that doesn't give details.

I just used Tweaks and Fixes to make creatures do 1.5x damage, slow movement, and a longer day cycle so that there are longer nights. Pair that with a ton of QoL mods, Realistic Craft 2.0, and a fragment count tweaker. I like extending the progression so I can have a longer play-through. I used to use the map mod but decided to just use beacons from now on

Getting rid of any music is going in the opposite way of ambience because the music plays a crucial role in making you more focused on the game and more emerged, try for example turn off music while you are being attacked by any leviathan and it gets on fire, doing this is just making things boring

The possessed beings you see are the result of some sort of skeletal-diver mimic that harms you if you look at it directly (ambush predator, man-sized). Doesn't seem to affect players much if they keep their back to it, but it's very unsettling nonetheless. Hang around the shallows and whenever you see a possessed diver/seamoth, look around for a stationary humanoid staring in your direction.

Due to a compatibility issue with the red plague and the increased inventory bags mod, you will need to disable the inventory bag mod to progress through part of the red plague, after you launch the red plague sample you can re enable it no problem though
