Wow this is a VHS gem! I loved their album. Wish it had been successful enough to make a second or third album. I still listen to the CD occasionally. It’s not on Apple Music or Spotify yet which is kinda annoying.

John Dillabough and I were in high school together at Lisgar in Ottawa, Steve grabbed both of us- the LA thing fucked John up and we’re still friends and he’s still playing away in rural Ontario with a big family. It was a wild ride for all of us back then and I’m very thankful I had the opportunity.

Thank you very much for share this in KZbin!!! I always was a big fan of this band, but in Spain at that time was really difficult to find anything about them. I get the one and only album but I never watched any clip or live show so I used to think for some time this band it never really existed, jajaja. I´d like to say this album and this band deserves right now a decent re-release on 24bit with Rock Candy Records with additional pics and tracks if it´ll be available.

Steve and I were good friends for a few years...We used to play music together....1980 - 1982. I actually was at a bar with Steve when I met my wife and we are still together 43 years later. Hope he is well. I would love to catch up with him.....

So the guitar player here Doug was my friend's roommate and we both auditioned after the record was done. Doug could sing backups and I couldn't so that was that lol. The real guitar player on the album is John Dillabough, and you're right...some of my fav guitar work of all time too! One step crazier is please tell me you have that NBC piece that starts after this with Tom Brokaw, because that's a day they filmed at GIT and I'm in it with my teacher Marty Friedman in the audience lol.

Hey! So that one guitar player did all the solos on the record?? Wow! I never heard that! What else did he record? Unfortunately I don't have anything after this...once the show was done I stopped recording 😟

It's been written here quite a few times already but these guys were indeed unique and their sole album is timeless classic in my book. If you ever come across it in a record store or record fair and you don't own a copy then pick one up and give it time to get its hooks in you. And when it does you will be just as addicted to it like the rest of us.

I see someone else here mention John Dillabough as the original guitar player recorded on the album. That is true fact and likely the reason they never recorded again. To this day not many people can play like him. Cool to see this video though it was likely only a few months after John's departure.

This was a treat to see. Both I, Napoleon and Mozart (who later changed their name to The Flyz and had a massive hit) had a very European-type presentation and almost classical-influenced hard rock sound. Both didn't get past putting out one album each, even though both are masterpieces of the era, in my opinion. No one knows who I'm talking about when I mention either band. I agree with the others who posted that I, Napoleon's sound was almost too original for the general hard rock audience at the time. They also had the misfortune of arriving onto the scene just as grunge was taking over. I've always felt that the best hard rock of the era came out during the tail end between 1989-1992 or so. A ton of great bands were signed but never got to release more than one or two albums, and weren't able to break through.

I'Napoleon's sole album is an absolute gem because it sounded quite unique (and in fact still does to this day). Not your standard melodic hard rock (not that I have anything against that, on the contrary) which led to the general record buying public not grasping their sound. Shame really cause it would have been most interesting to see what they would have come up on a sophomore effort.
@dreamstorm3297

It is truly a hidden gem, fiercely unique. Having observed behavior throughout the decades, I think their sound was too nuanced for even most of the '80's AOR/hard rock/glam metal enthusiasts to grasp. The melodic hard rock was the base but it was adorned with some elusive shade of European almost "baroque" type of atmosphere that was sprinkled with a slightly dark and solemn mood. The band name and CD cover art inside out /w photoshoot also helped support that atmosphere, nonetheless. Very artistic.

I think they sounded pretty generic just from this video. Maybe that's why they never got big enough to justify making a music video. But it's still cool to see a band from that era that I've never heard of. Thanks for sharing.

Not the best quality to be judging them. To this day their debut album is a mainstay in my headphones, incredibly unique sound compared to what was out at the time. They were one of the many bands Geffen summarily dismissed when Nirvana killed rock.
