This is my camera. I’ve had one for 6 years and have run over 500 rolls of mainly Ilford delta 100 through it. I bring it on my travels to Europe. The weight is worth it. I’m off on a cruise next month and the 30 rolls of film just came today. It will take me weeks to develop the film, make contact sheets and then print the final dozen or so keepers. It is like going on the trip twice. Open your mind to a different photography experience. It will reward you in the end. Charlie in Virginia

I'm happy to see that you are going to get some use out of it! Last week, I just sold my mint: 500CM, 50, 80 & 150, all three extension tubes, bellows shade, WL & 45 degree prism and whole lot of extras. It's not that I didn't want to hang on to it, I just wanted to let someone else fall in love with it and enjoy the process of medium format film shooting. Having owned and shot professionally with Mamiya, Bronica, Hasselblad, Sinar, etc., film cameras since the 1970's, I still have a soft spot for them and miss it. For now, a Fuji GFX50s with the articulating finder and the 50mm 3.5, 110 f/2 and 32-64 will have to do for the limited time I have to shoot personal projects on medium format. I'll look forward to seeing what you create!

Good Morning Hugh. I would love to know how often you are using the 500 c/m, I bought a little used one with a Zeiss 50mm f/4 lens for landscape work and it is simply gorgeous! I would be interested in your thoughts regarding colour/mono film, I have put some HP5 through with lovely results but here in the UK colour film like Portra is cheaper and processing is also cheaper and quicker so how about using colour then converting to Mono in Lightroom? Nowadays when we get film processed we can get digital scans from the lab included so we get the best of both worlds, Shooting on film with negs and digital results! Wonderful. I would love to know your thoughts. Kind regards, John

My photo prof in undergrad used a Mamiya with a 90mm lens. Great prof. Taught me a lot. Thinking earlier…Kodak Brownie in various iterations using 120 film. 12 shot rolls. Were us poor country folks kinda-sorta shooting medium format for those old cameras? I really learned on my dad’s Konica Autoreflex w/40mm lens…now a video pro, but returned to photography with a Leica Q2. Minimalist heaven.

The Hasselblad 500 C/M was so expensive over four decades ago that it took me several years to save for one after I bought my first SLR. It wasn't even available locally and had to get it through mail order. Then there were the usual accessories but importantly, the meter prism finder & Polaroid Back. Since it wasn't my primary camera, but mainly for detail works, theatre posters & PR materials and studio portraits, it was an expensive system to own. Although during the first few months, I did took it out to shoot outdoor fashion shows. As well, I wonder how many of the new generation of film photographers know about the Hasselblad notches. 🙂

It's a beautiful camera. I've used the 500CM for some years now. I would recommend using an ACUTE MATTE D ground glass with the 150mm lens because of the light fall off. Seems to be a much brighter, clearer image on it.

Cool! Welcome to the party. If I may share a best practice: Especially when using it with the waist level finder for street photography, try holding the body with your left hand, the index finder on the shutter release button and focus with the right hand. It is quicker than focusing first with your right hand and the changing grip to press the release button with the right hand's index finger. But I guess you knew that already.

What a beautiful camera. I think that sometimes we need to forget about practicality, and instead, simply immerse ourselves in an aesthetic experience for the sheer joy of using a piece of gear that is well thought out and refined into something that transcends utility. For me, many years ago this came from using a Rolleiflex twin. I felt like I was 'one' with that camera. I have been thinking of doing exactly what you are doing, only with the Rollieflex, as it was the camera that I felt connected to. Being 6x6, I can easily make contact prints, and Hugh, I am sure that you know of the intrinsic beauty that contact prints have. You have something special in that Hasselblad. It truly is beautiful, and I look forward to seeing what you will do with it.

It’s a lovely camera! I have a very old one, with the 80mm lens and waist level finder, which REALLY gives a different way of working, with the image reversed in the finder. Slow photography, but very satisfying. No meterig prísm, but I found an iPhone app that did the job nicely. (Negative film, plenty of latitude.). Time to dust it off and put it back into use…. Have fun with yours!

I have a 501c/m which I bought as new-old stock in a sealed box about five years ago. I have a hot and cold relationship with it. It's heavy and I find it difficult to focus especially wide open and close up. When I'm not using it I think about selling it, but when I see the results it makes possible I fall in love with it again and think I never will. You'll probably need new seals for those film backs; they are cheap and not hard to do yourself. Good luck!

I love shooting with my 500 C/M. It is a slow shooting process for me. I meter with my Sekonic unit. With 12 frames per roll, I take fewer photos. I don't know if that is good or not. I can't quite use it as a snapshot camera. Too many steps from scrutinizing the potential photo through metering, setting the Ap/Ss, framing, focusing then checking framing again, removing darkslide. But the sound of the mirror, shutter and rear curtain working together is intoxicating. Good luck and all that!

I have the Hasselblad 500 CM, oh yes! It’s an expensive camera system, but I have tried Rolleiflex, Mamiya TLR’s, YashicaMat 124G and the Bronica SQ, and I can say that the Hasselblad images with its 80mm 2.8 lens is sharp, so sharp that I added a 50mm and 150mm to round out my Hasselblad kit. Yes, I shoot full frame digital, but for film, this is my go-to the camera that I use the most for film photography.

Out of my range (sadly), but I'm working up to self-rationalize a more affordable Pentax 645 setup. My mother always dreamed of being able to spring up from her Minolta cameras to a Hasselblad, before she had to give up photography due to hand issues. She'd still love one, though.

My Mamiya C330 is my poor man’s Hassleblad because it has the option of lens interchangeability. I love the 55 and keep it on the camera most of the time. Hint HP5+ is amazing well toned and smooth in 120 and developed in HC110. If you want near 4x5 quality a tripod mounted MF camera loaded with Ilford Pan F is amazing.

You absolutely owe it to yourself to get to know the 500 c/m & the amazing Zeiss glass it paints with. I love those lenses, & the auto stop-down function is a delight, even compared to the Leica R lenses I love so much =) It’s also great to just push yourself outside your comfort zone to discover how you see things differently through another format. Last year I picked up a digital scanning back & a lovely old Linhof Technikardan 45 & found that large-format shooting is freaking zen & I bloody love it. I love my smaller cameras too, but I all too often find myself craving my century-old symmetrical lenses & the simple ability to employ tilt & shift…

I swoon whenever I think about my former Hasselblad kit. A beautifully crafted machine w/ stellar optics and such a feel in the hand. I sold it in the late 80’s when I was no longer shooting professionally (another story) and no longer wanted to lug the gear for casual shooting. I still think “film” when I shoot digital and never have been able to shake that. Hours in front of a computer screen don’t hold a candle to the magic of a darkroom for me.

You should look into the PME 45 prism finder if you want something with a meter. the PM 45 you have is just sort of ok. The PME 45 is significantly brighter and the nearest to the brightness of the WLF and the PME 45 works properly with the acute d split screen microprism. To my knowledge, the PME 45 is the only metered prism finder that works properly with that focusing screen. The PME 90 is next in brightness and offers a higher viewpoint but does not properly meter with that focusing screen.

A good decision! A similar camera, the Hasselblad 205FCC (focal plane shutter) with the 80mm f/2.8 CFI was what really re-ignited my interest in photography in 2014. It almost immediately made me see images in a completely new way that I had never experienced with any other camera, analogue or digital. Since I got it, I have put a few hundred rolls (B/W, C41, E6 and a little ECN2) through it and have bought some lenses, film backs, finders and other accessories. The biggest drawback is the weight of a kit with the camera, 3 lenses, 3 backs, film, tripod and a few extra items. Still, a lovely camera to use. I dread the day the focal plane shutter dies.

Please, just do it. You tried the 4X5 (and I also have, with the same camera) and that is far more work just to grab an image. I'd suggest getting one of the Reveni Labs light meters and using that on the camera. With this, and the prism finder which you show, I find that I'm really pretty close in speed to what I would shoot anything digital or 35mm film (I came up as a film guy so I don't "spray and pray" even if I can shot 10+ FPS) and the negatives print beautifully. Good luck, and much thanks for all the videos.

You as someone who probably hasn’t shot much film in the last decade I have to urge you to try Portra 400 and 800. And know it sounds basic but these films are truly impressive technically. I was able to shoot a massive could only lit by the moon with a 50mm f1.5 at 1/8th semi handheld with 35mm Portra 800. This film is truly able to capture light where there almost is none. Portra 400 is not as sensitive but it’s basically a C41 Vision3 in terms of characteristics. These films scanned on a well operated, darkroom paper emulating, Fuji Frontier will give you the most gorgeous colors and contrast you can get. I promise you will be blown away by the quality and tacitly of a Portra medium format shot scanned on a Frontier. Side note: While the Frontiers render a rather contrasty print like contrast curve, they have a toe and shoulder that hides impressive amounts of dynamic range in the shadows and highlights. That can be brought back during editing. Portra and a Frontier are one of the most accessible ways of getting colors akin of shooting Kodak Vision3 movie film and printing it photochemically onto 2383 print stock. And you don’t even need it overexpose the film for it.

oh yes it's my dream camera I never could afford when I was younger and I could buy second hand a few year ago. This is a genuine "old" 500CM in nice shape. To make focusing much easier you have to change the focusing screen by the last one with the D outcut on the metal frame and recalibrate the meter prism for the brighter screen. And not to forget the new Hasselblad 50 Mpix digital back that fits perfectly and automatically on this legacy camera. And the legendary lenses like the 50 CF FLE, 100 Planar, 250 Superachromat

I'm sure you'll have fun with it, Hugh. I love my Mat 124G, so I was always drown to a modular 6x6 SLR - but with my already massive investment and overspending on 35mm cameras... *cough* Leica... *cough* *cough* ... I didn't want to spend Hasselblad money. I ended up buying a Bronica S2A, serviced it myself to fix focus issues. The Bronica is nice enough, it's probably heavier but the main reason I will stick with it over the Hasselblad system - beyond affordability: that gorgeous Nikon 40mm f4 lens which renders an 35mm equivalent field of view to a 20mm lens on 135. Hasselblad does not offer anything in that range. There's nothing like an extreme, rectilinear wide angle on 6x6.

I figure I'll shoot Ektachrome 100 for color, but I'm not sure about B&W (I'm looking at HP-4, HP-5, Tri-X and T-Max; leaning toward HP-4). I intend to farm out the developing and scanning. Thoughts on black & white, anyone?
@chesslover8829
@chesslover8829 Жыл бұрын
@3BMEP Ektachrome 100 has a narrow exposure range of 5 EV (exposure valuation); that's five stops, similar in regard to Kodachrome, which had the same ability to capture both shadow and highlight detail. If highlights are important along with good color saturation, then three F-stops might be prudent. You may have to use a graduated neutral density filter to keep the highlights from being blown out. Ilford FP4 is a popular film among landscape photographers who value sharpness, reasonably fine grain, and higher contrast than the other black and films on your list. Note that commercial labs often develop black and white flim, including Ilford FP4, using ID-11 Plus or Kodak D-76. Better and more expressive results can be had with a compensating developer, such as Kodak HC-110, a formulation favored by both Fred Picker and Ansel Adams. Other favorites include Adox Adonal (Rodinal) 1:50, 510 Pyro, Kodak XTOL, Wimberley WD2D+, PMK Pyro, and Pyrocat-HD. Because of its 400 ISO rating, Ilford HP5 allows for higher shutter speeds, good for hand-held work, and it has a lovely, softer tonal scale than FP4. The look and feel of silver gelatin prints made from HP5 reminds me of platinum prints. Grain will be more visible with HP5 than with FP4. If you're looking for a more coarse appearance to your images, you may want to use Kodak Tri-X, a film made famous by Henri Cartier-Bresson and a legion of reportage photographers. Tri-X works well with HC-110 and D-76, diluted 1:3. T-max 400 may be the Goldilocks film among those you have listed. It gives you reasonably fine grain for its ISO but it also allows for faster shutter speeds in dimmer light. T-max 400 works well with most of the developers listed above, especially Ilford ID-11 Plus, HC-110, D-76, diluted 1:3, and the T-max developer. For a slightly coarser look, Adox Adonal (Rodinal) 1:50 works well.

I might, just might(!), have had more cameras than you have had. And, given the number of culls of 35mm slides - filling multiple garbage bags . . . but then still to do it again, and again, wondering how there are still so many left! - dread to think how much film I’ve used, ‘am every bit as ‘guilty’. To the point that, last week I couldn’t resist another Rolleiflex (I can’t afford = heating system now off!) to replace the ones I regretted selling. To your point, of the last cameras bought and sold (all but two sold at silly losses) I never shot a single roll through a Leica IIIF (your fault!), a beautiful Alpa 10D, a Linhof Master Technika IV, an Arca Swiss F-Line 6x9 , anArt Deco style gray Rolleiflex and a Leica R8. Many repeat buys of ones actually used in the past. And one or two rolls (some yet to be processed) through Nikon FE, Nikon F3, Nikon F5 , Leica R8 and Leica R6.2. Maybe I have a problem? But, now you have motivated me to start. So, tomorrow it’s some macro work with the Rolleiflex (with close up filter/lenses) and OM2. About time…

With Medium Format film almost cheaper than 35mm and the well worth path in the grass of Leica Shooters to Hasselblad, not even *remotely* surprised 😂

This is my medium format dream camera. I can afford it, but if I buy one more camera (bought three in the past six months already) my significant other will NOT be amused. So it'll have to wait... for now.

This is a dangerous path you are going down. The 500C/M is addictive and easy to use. Sometimes I think it can shoot itself. And by the way, the keep ratio is much higher than any 35mm I have ever used. Shoot and enjoy.

All of these cameras are going to give you a quick and easy result. Why don’t you get something a bit more challenging, like a Lubitel 166? Then you have to actually work for the photo.

THANK YOU! I got through ten shots, then read this and simply tripped the shutter to finish the roll and brought it in for processing and scanning. ETA: two weeks!! #holdthatthought

Shame on you for all the Hasselporn. I had a Hasselblad 500 c/m many many years ago and loved it. But, I finally let it, and the lenses, go when I determined that photography wasn't going to be my career. But, I still find it alluring and enticing even though I know I wouldn't shoot with it often if I had one now. I am on the lookout for a nonfunctioning one, though, just to put on a shelf.

Well, first, good luck to you with your camera. Perhaps you could put off using it even more with a few cold showers. Or perhaps an intervention is in order. A content-driven photographic intervention consists of viewing KZbin for 24 hours straight. Watch only camera gear "reviews" with only an occasional potty break and frequent breaks for Coke and chocolate. After all of our reviewer "friends" have influenced you, their information flow congeals into white noise with imperceptible value. Then, and only then, will you be able to continue life with or without the camera in question. Its value will have reduced to nuts, bolts, plastic, metal and glass. The cure is glorious. Love your channel.

Great camera system choice! Only missing for me is 50mm f4 T* Distagon wide angle in your 'starter kit', not sure of your use and applications but the lens is a beast for a medium wide, 75 degree angle of view excellence. (And maybe add one of those new digital backs that go with System V?). Kudos for continuous, superlative content!
