Miro, I love your channel. I do have to say, this video reinforces to me what I don't like about growing in semi-hydro, and especially pon - the constant need to repot and deal with vagrant roots. When you got to the hanging hoyas on the wall of the grow tent, it occurred to me I have been growing hanging hoys in bagged potting soil, in the same four-inch / ten-centimeter terra cotta pots for up to 10 years, and they are absolutely huge plants, with no repotting in that entire ten year period, but they are still healthy, blooming, and growing bigger all the time. Many times over I have looked at some of my hoyas and thought there is no way that plant could ever be supported in pon due to the immense weight of the foliage. I could cut these plants regularly to keep them small, and there would be even less need to repot. Disclaimer - I do have hoys in pon, and I generally like using leca for many of my hoyas, but I know full well these are temporary setups and I'll never have a hoya in the same pot, in leca, for ten years. But it's fun to experiment. I wonder, though: is semi-hydro really fun, or just a lot of busy work with an accompanying requirement to buy and buy supplies to maintain what is, really, an unsustainable growing method? I am starting to suspect that much like DVDs and Beanie Babies, pon and all these self-watering pots are destined for landfills.
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants Жыл бұрын
Well, you could also trim the roots. The inorganic media works a bit differently; in organic media, a lot of it gets broken down and gets washed away, and in the end you are left mainly with roots. In something like pon, this doesn't happen, so you need to repot. But it doesn't need to be as frequent as I sometimes do it. Many times I do it to have a bigger plant. The plants on the wall are in 3 inch pots, most of them are a year - year and a half old and many are over 2 meters long, but wrapped around multiple times. They could stay like that for some time now, but I would like to repot them, and trim them to make nicer, bushier plants :) I generally don't like single vines, I like them branched out. Many of my hoyas gets trimmed every couple of months. I used to grow them in terracotta, and it never worked that well for me - not just hoyas, any houseplant really. I cannot have 300 terracotta pots in a room, because when I water, the terracotta wicks the moisture, stays damp, gets mould and rises the humidity in the room. The growing space is very small, and essentially a bedroom/ office/ plant room combination :) So I choose what works best for me - self-watering pots, growing in tents and cabinets, and, for a lot of them, growing in pon (though I also have hoya in coco peat and perlite). Some of them in my self-watering pots are in coco peat and perlite, and that is fine too. But I would much prefer to have entire collection in self-watering, than not. None of my pots are going to a landfill anytime soon, and I don't really see the need for them too. :) Even if you upsize, a smaller plant can go in there :) We also could sell them, and someone can make use of them. I would love for that to be an option here where I live, but self-watering pots are not availalble in general (but for example, in Germany, you can see them sold on eBay, used, all the time). But also if someone doesn't want to grow in leca/ pon, that doesn't mean they cannot grow in SF pots. Many Swedish growers do - if you check out Summer Rayne Oakes' video, when she visited late Torill Nyhuus, you can see she grew all of her hoyas in SF pots, in organic mix. And I know that Camilla Gedin does too, also another very big Swedish hoya collector. At the end of the day, for me, it is what you prefer, not the trend. All potting mixes have their benefits and flaws, something I say all the time. Same goes for pots. And as for sustainaility, well, growing houseplants is generally not sustainable, but I try to get cuttings from collectors vs mass produced plants in big nurseries, and I reuse or gift all the pots that I have/ had :) Plus, you can use pon indefinitely, so that is a big plus for me.

I loved the video, as I am side-eying my To Do list right now 😅 I think you are doing an incredible job getting so much repotting done! I’m used to seeing the villosa “Cao Bang” referred to as globulosa. Have you heard this used? Also, I have this plant on a wire trellis and it’s really pretty. You have to be careful on the “downward and back to the base” part, but the thicker stem is surprisingly pliable. Also, did you take the hanhiae bloom photo with your new macro lens? I loved the picture 😊
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants Жыл бұрын
There is no Hoya villosa, it is all Hoya globulosa :) So, the correct name is Hoya globulosa (from Cao Bang, Vietnam) :) Hoya villosa is a newer name for the same plant and old name takes precedant. There are many clones of globulosa out there, smaller, longer, more and less fuzzier leaves, but they all flower the same, making them the same species - globulosa. Yes! :) The bloom photos were taken with my macro lens. :)

I let my OG plants ( publicalx, Kerri, varg obavata etc) sit in their nursery soil/pot for a few years. Every one said they like to be tight... well that's a big NO!! They all ended up getting root rot because the soil was trash and no matter how long I soaked it would hydrate. Less for sure that your carnosa can't stay in that pot for 20 plus years unless that medium is good tp begin with. So yes I feel your pain
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants Жыл бұрын
I don't buy them from nurseries anymore, I find the IDs are unreliable, and as you said, the soil doesn't really work for us. And often times, the one in Europe that are imported from Asia in coco chips will have root mealybugs. So not worth it.

Miro, this video tickles my Hoya bone, always very dangerous for my finances when I watch a video of yours 😅. Regarding the problem with the "tauteness" of your grid in the 2nd tent: could it be due to the orientation you installed it in?

It could not fit the other way :) In smaller tent, that was the best orientation because the grid is 120cm tall, but in the 150cm tent, you have to turn it around.

Unfortunately, I ended up having to reroot about 25 of my hoyas that got too dry during an early heat wave in FL in February. Some of them were quite large. I am hoping they are able to recover well enough. Such a bummer, because I missed out on a lot of blooms due to it. This whole business about how they like to dry out completely between watering is such a fallacy, in my experience!
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants Жыл бұрын
It really is :( They can really sufffer a lot if you let them dry out so much that the leaves get wrinkly, but, we all make mistakes. I try not to do it, but as you can see, it happens.
