I believe Sean Baker is what Sam Levinson tries to be so many times. Sean Baker’s films show that straightforward grittiness of Americana culture without any pretense. He really just understands how to communicate realism through film.

Asinine take honestly
@whenaubreyhearsthis26 күн бұрын
there is nothing about anything sam levinson has ever done that aims to portray the realism. i cant speak for that black and white one with zendaya, but euphoria and the one with the weekend are NOT meant to be realistic, they are abstractions, maximized with movie magic that sean baker doesn't really use (like lighting lol)

@shaquillesoneallis9679 күн бұрын
@@whenaubreyhearsthis yes they are... kinda. euphoria was meant to be realistic and speak and represent real issues among teens. (it flopped doing that) the idol was supposed to represent and speak on the reality for women in the entertainment industry before lily rose depp was kicked off the writing. (it failed big time a doing that, going for this weird the abuser is actually the victim). sam levinson himself is really big on abstract metaphors that exclude him from the realism category (at least in euphoria and the idol) but his aim has always been to show the "real" in his films. you can see this in a lot of his interviews about his work, especially the black and white one with Zendaya lol. but bc he cant commit to either one genre they always fall flat. its kinda like he wants his cake and to eat it too tbh.

The screwball comedy of the 2nd act had the whole audience laugh out loud for an hour straight. That makes the comedown of the 3rd act so much more devastating. Just like Ivan was having fun at Ani’s expense, so too were we the audience. While we may have fun with Ani for a couple of hours, she’s left crying as we leave her.

I feel like I had a different experience with this film than most people. The comedy elements were definitely there, but especially in the second half, I was just worried for Anora. I felt like I was in her shoes, and through that lenses, the movie is just pure anxiety, because she really is in SO MUCH danger. I kept wondering, "When is she gonna breakdown?" And then that ending scene happened and I was just so sad for her. For the record, I did like the movie, but calling it a "screwball comedy" just kinda gives me pause.

I just got out of the theater and the end of that movie broke me, the movie is an example of how much material things consume us. Having to degrade yourself for money is hard enough in life then to only love and marry for money. Anora was a product of a damaged society that in the end collapsed on her the moment she had an opportunity to show love and affection in a way that didn’t involve sex or an exchange for goods. The message in this movie is strong, very direct and is very important.

Couldn't disagree more about the tone issue. The screwball comedy section in the middle ties directly into the themes and the underlying thesis of the film about class, capitalism & the American dream. Desperate, financially dependent people manically running around trying to find and reign in someone with unlimited money and 0 consequences for their actions, only for him to make an even bigger fool out of all of them felt perfectly in tune with what the film was saying about exploitation and class. Not to mention the way all of the working class people are pitted against each other in order to further their own survival. Everyone is being played here, not just Anora, and I think it's important that it uses these additional side characters to show how different people and aspects of society are affected by the ruling class
@mossicely21 күн бұрын
Absolutely, you're completely on point. I thought the comedy was a welcome way to balance the bleakness underlying the direction the film was heading. It humanized the "goons", and demonstrated how the working class is pit against each other by real power. The tone was a masterful balancing act to me that really worked, in a way I don't think I felt since Parasite.

I agree with all of that, but I did find that part both amazing (for every single reason you listed) and also kind of exhausting, because the movie did kind of drift away from Anora (figuratively) a bit too much. It became about the goons, which were again done super well, and I was laughing and having a good time, but it was such a far cry from the first part of the movie and it kept going for so long, it was a bit rough. Still, terrific movie. I agree with the 4/5 just because of that minor pacing issue.

Uhg! I’m giddy because u left the film thinking it reminded me of Julia’s character in uncut gems. That is honestly a major compliment because Julia is a true NY girl so it wasn’t a stretch for her which made it her so character believable and likable. I watched an interview with Mikey after the film and was shocked that she was so different than the character esp in voice because of how well she delivered. Living through NY in bk through my 20s and now 30s i feel like I know her and her friends it just so on point. If she didn’t deliver, it would have ruined the entire movie and I would have been irked and hated it deeply but she executed the persona flawlessly and accurately. She must have really spent time with us cause she nailed it even in the nuances.

The young boy (Ivanoff? I keep forgot it his name) being just nowhere for like an hour after driving the story to that point was jarring. Still, amazing ending and good movie. I finally got to see this movie in theaters today and really enjoyed it! What I love most is how Sean creates chaos with characters talking over each other, moving throughout the world in tumultuous circumstances then at the end ending so quietly and this was no different. I still believe Tangerine will always be his magnum opus as it is one of my favorite movies of all time. Mickey ate up in this film and most of it worked for me. However, surprisingly for me the ending I wish worked for me more. We didn't get to see her depth much throughout I wish in a way it was hinted more then the ending would feel more real? I am still trying to find out why. Great movie though excited to see where he will go next.
