Many factors played a part in it bombing. The main reason was Disney was never interested in marketing Treasure Planet even though it was the dream project of the makers who worked with Disney for a long time. Disney never even considered their hard work and continued not to market or promote it anyways. The other reasons are as the above people said that it was not a princess movie and was released alongside Harry Potter.

In case you’re wondering, John Musker and Ron Clements also directed The Great Mouse Detective, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, Princess and the Frog, and Moana! ❤️ This movie was a dream project for the two of them for over a decade, which makes it all the sadder that it became the box office bomb that it was. 😔 Fortunately, it was nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, did a lot of cool revolutionary techniques with combining animation styles, and has a passionate audience. ❤️
@lawrencejones1517

This movie is based on the book, Treasure Island by Robert Lewis Stevenson. Interestingly, Disney made a live action movie of the book, one of their first live action movies, also. Treasure Planet is amazing from an animation point of view because it was a hybrid of classic cell animation and computer animation. It was well written and fantastically animated, but while Disney originally green lit the production, with the proposed follow on TV series, several companies lead by Pixar, were making computer animated features that were a step above cell animation. Disney saw that cell animation was dying, and computer animation was the future. If they wanted to be a part of that future, they were going to have to follow the other animation studio's lead. This resulted in Treasure Planet being under promoted so it wouldn't do well at the box office, and also canceling the TV series.

I think this movie connects more with boys/men because it's basically a father and son story. A lot of boys can sympathize with Jim Hawkins (wanting a dad/man role in their lives to show them the ropes), and a lot of dads can sympathize with John Silver (making mistakes throughout life, but finding redemption in being a role model, and using tha to be a better man)
@SusanaCanales1
@SusanaCanales1 2 жыл бұрын
I think that’s being overly specific. It’s more a parent-child relationship. Fathers and mothers abandon daughters, as well as sons. I can’t imagine them not relating simply because Jim is a boy and silver is a man.

Also fun fact: both movies share the same musical composer, James Newton Howard who also did two other animated films for Disney "Dinosaur" and "Raya and the Last Dragon" as well as "Maleficent" and all 4 "Hunger Games" films. If you like adaptations of Treasure Island featuring strange creatures in classic roles, there's (I'd argue) the best version ever. Starring the impeccable Tim Curry, with a banger of a soundtrack, Muppet Treasure Island is a tongue-in-cheek, semi-parody of this same story. It's hilarious, it's got great lines, and Kermit gets to play the captain.

John Rzeznik from Goo Goo Dolls does the song "I'm Still Here" Which is used during the Jim and Silver montage where he has his flashbacks. Also the movies ending song used in its credits "Always Know Where You Are"

You got my subscirption for Treasure Planet and respect for seeing you also reacted to Atlantis! You are awesome! I really liked the cooking scene Silver did in this movie, as a kid, I found it mersmerizing for some reason. As an adult, I just realized I liked watching cooking. And animated cooking done in detail was extra so!

In my opinion, this was the last great hand-drawn animated movie ever produced by Disney. I hope that this style of animated movies will come back someday.

Fun fact: RLS on the ship are initials for the author of Treasure Island. So it’s the legacy of the author himself.

Totally underrated movie. Since it came out when CGI became a thing, everyone started to throw shit at 2D animated movies (and still do to this day). And it's a shame because this adaptation of Treasure Island is sooo good!

I was literally thinking back to old memories and came across this movie, bought it, watched it 5x, cried several times due to the nostalgia and then looked up people's reactions to see if they also enjoyed the movie. My goodness this was and is still a tremendous movie

ok to answer your question about why flint kept the treasure after his death. To put it simply, its extreme greed. He wanted the satisfaction that the treasure would only be his for eternity no matter how wasteful that would be.

Stevenson's books are, for some reason, considered suitable only for kids - but nowadays, kids find them dull and hard to get into. They are certainly suitable recreational reading for adults.

Ron Clemens and John Musker, along with composers Howard Ashman (rip) and Alan Menken are the ones who bassically kicked off the Disney Renaissance in the 90s.

The directors made The Little Mermaid(Which saved Disney feature animation, started the Renaissance and gave birth to musicals and return of the Princess in animation), Aladdin, and Hercules so that the studio would let them make Treasure Planet... then they got screwed over when the corporation intentionally marketed the film poorly.
