Saw a BTS about the film and it was written consciously channeling the same vibes as The Lego Movie and Scott Pilgrim vs The World where allusions to real world issues are mixed with stylized video game aesthetics and tropes. Succeeded where Ready Player One tripped. Also, this serves as a big middle finger to execs ruining games (and movies) putting profitability over creativity.

One other movie that you should watch if you haven't already is Sing 2. I'm willing to give you that in the future there will be NPCs that are AI and do have their own lives, but I can't believe that there would ever be a time in which *every* single filler NPC that just spawns in an area to fill it with people would have a full "character" behind them, aside from a few, very specific games or game types that cater to that feature.
