End of the World is one of my favorite final levels in any game, ever. I love the intimidating descent into the darkest depths of space like a black hole, the quiet, music-less intro in Gate to the Dark. The ominous message in the Ark. And CHERNABOG as the guardian of the last stretch should tip you off to how deep in it you’re getting.

It reminds me of the final dungeon in the OG Persona 5, which I won't name for spoiler reasons. But like in KH1, you think you've already seen the last world when the game tells you there's one more villain to fight. So then you get to dark, ominous place more horrifying than anything else you've seen in the game, and keep thinking you're in the last stretch right before the final boss only to be met with a whole new area of challenges. Fantastic build-up to a final boss fight (and one of the reasons Royal didn't feel nearly as climatic to me).

I dunno if anyone ever told you, but pretty sure the reason Riku stays in there is because the door has to be closed and sealed with the keyblade from both sides. Sora, Donald, and Goofy closed it on there side and Riku and Mickey closed it on theirs.

The actual reason was it won't let a heart pass through from that side, which is why darkness is all that keeps spilling out. We don't actually learn this until much later though.

Riku legit CANNOT leave. He has no physical body since ansem took it. His heart is trapped in darkness

@TargetSniper365 Yes, that's how he got to the realm of darkness but by the point he appears on the other side of the door Ansem is defeated and vanishes with the light. So it stands to reason by this point his physical body has been returned to him. Now I don't remember if what the other guys says is true or not but I do remember that the Door to Darkness needed to be closed & sealed from both sides which was made easier by Riku being there.

@@TargetSniper365 No, I played COM and aware of what happens in it. I don't see your point though. There is nothing at any point saying that the darkness is what is keeping Riku there trapped behind the door. It isn't until Ansem's defeat that his body was returned to him. However, since his heart was on the otherside of the door that's where his body went when Ansem vanished after being blasted by the light of Kingdom Hearts. And I think what most likely happened is at some point Mickey who had been talking to Riku throughout his time within the Realm of Darkness told him about the door needing to be closed from both sides along with his and Sora's keyblades. After all in another game recapping this event we see Riku spawn seemingly out of nowhere and immediately run towards the door to close it. Something he otherwise wouldn't immediately know to just do. Now after the door vanishes and Riku is left where he is at the start of COM that I would say was because of the darkness.

For me the hardest part of the Final Boss fight is the second stage against Ansem, (the one without Donald and Goofy) in the same chamber you fight that Darkside. The stuff against Ansem as giant ship was a bit annoying, but relatively fine once I figured out how I was supposed to do it. I was definitely hoping for a more fun final phase, so I was disappointed when it just transitioned into the cutscene. For all the flack Atlantica gets, it does a great job preparing the player for flying in Neverland. Since you already learned the mechanics through swimming in Atlantica, flying feels almost as exhilarating for the player as it does for Sora, since it's the same thing but faster. And the game really wants you to feel like you're good at flying, since it's needed a few times in End of the World.

For KH secret bosses, being smart with your magic and learning how to guard are essential. Dodge roll and super glide are good as well. Aeroga and Tinkerbell/Bambi are worth mentioning

Not a spoiler, but a warning for Chain of Memories. After you beat it, there's a second story for Riku. So you technically have to beat it twice. But Riku's story is about 1/3 the length of Sora's.

Literally watched the whole thing. I hope you will consider posting KH2 on your channel :) Amazing playthrough. loved the whole thing. But maaaaaan that Ansem fight was a struggle hahah. I loved the flying mechanics as a kid. I think the only thing I wish you did was get Ultima Weapon here because you were pretty close having already gotten all the dalmations and trinities! Thats what helps you do big damage to the secret bosses. You were tickling the unknown pretty much haha. Also had to pause and watch your cover of Simple and Clean. WOW it was incredible. Blew me away. Really cool that you came back and played through this game after that cover a few years ago. Thank you for the effort you put into this playthrough. I really do wish I had a bit of extra time to get the Ultima weapon (especially because like you said, we were so close!) and beating all the side bosses would have been fun but oh well - I'm happy to say at least we'll have all of that to look forward to in my KH2 playthrough, so not all is lost! Thanks again for experiencing this with me! :D

Fun fact: In case you were wondering why Mickey was hardly in the game, it’s because Disney (at the time) didn’t trust Square Enix to portray him properly, so they heavily restricted them from using him. As a result, Mickey doesn’t appear until the very end and only has a few lines of voiced dialogue. Another fun fact: Mickey is the voice that speaks to Sora (and you) during the tutorial.

The actual reason is because another game called "Disney's Magical Mirror Starring Mickey Mouse" by Capcom came out the same year, and Disney didn't legal issues with two games featuring Mickey releasing at the same time. Ironically the game is most remembered today for restricting Mickey from appearing in KH1.

Thanks for taking the time to edit these! I know it's a lot of effort and it's greatly appreciated =) I know you said there'd be breaks of other things before more KH content. Is the upload schedule for the channel following the order you played things, or can we expect more KH stuff soon? And yeah, the secret bosses in this game mostly have a trick, and the desert one is actually the most fair of them all. Phantom is stacking MP (you never got MP Rage on Sora cuz of your beginning choices, but "get MP when you take damage" is crazy good), Sephiroth is "have elixers for soul harvest unless you clutch interrupt every cast," and ice giant is "use guard" (We all knew that one wasn't happening lol).

Second phase ansem is easier if you choose the shield instead of the sword because you get an ability called second chance early and second chance allows you to survive big attack when your health low as long as your not on 1 hp

Unpopular, but I like Chain of Memories. Once you get a good deck built with some good combos it gets very fun imo. I had it on Gameboy, I still remember being a kid and finally beating it in the backseat of the family car in a parking lot haha, the I had to wait for KH2. I also remember a bit later, seeing the first commercial for KH2 on my tv between cartoons and absolutely freaking out lol

I'm glad you enjoyed your time with Kingdom Hearts 1 (Final Mix), on top of the future ones, I'm sure. On to my TLDR; Yes, there is a certain way of dealing with these secret bosses, and many people, like you, tend to have a difficult time with them, even on lower difficulties. I find myself having no need to deal with the first secret boss you fought after beating the game because (spoiler) ... It does give only one thing by defeating him... And that's turning your Stopra into Stopga. And that's it. Nothing else. *shakes head and rolls eyes* Its hardly necessary for one to fight Phantom, as in that instance, it doesn't ADD anything more to the lore, or otherwise, I'll be honest... As for the fights of Unknown Figure, Kurt Zisa, and Sephiroth? Here's the kicker to them, if you didn't already know... They each have their own Ansem Reports in this game for Final Mix. Unknown Figure has Report 13, Sephiroth has Report 12, and Kurt Zisa has Report 11. If I recall correctly, in the original 2002 version of the game, these Reports weren't there and were just something different in comparison to what was added into the Final Mix version of the game as they added more of Ansem's Lore and what he was doing as these last three reports were and are referencing certain key elements to the next two games (Re:COM/COM and KH2/FM)... I'll be honest with myself, and others... Unknown Figure, even after my 9-11 year gap of playing this game, didn't give me too much trouble (though, I literally will say, I grinded to level 85 to face him at that level, which, I'll be honest, took me about three to four hours with sending Ice Titan's Ice Shards with Block right back at him... As it gives up to at least 100-150 Tech Points, at most, for each Shard redirected back at him, depending on if you're using EXP accessories or not...)... I'll be honest, on my channel here on KZbin, I can safely say... Getting to level 85 to 90+ or more took me at least seven to eight hours because I had the "Road to Midday" levelling curve that I chose at the beginning of the game with those questions in the "Station of Awakening" tutorial segment... A slow levelling curve at the start and end, but really fast in the middle... Still... First trying Unknown Figure myself on Proud Mode in KH1FM, might be one heck of a highlight (though with the Tinkerbell summon, Divine Rose, and having Donald and Goofy just on "emergency only for abilities" and "Frequently" on basic attacks... Made this fight manageable a bit, is indeed a bit broken, as Tinkerbell has a healing of every 5 seconds to you and your party members)... Kurt Zisa? I believe he took me at least three tries on Proud Mode... Sephiroth? Also on Proud Mode, I may have edited my 7-8 hour recording during that time with his fights to cut down on the multitude of retries on him, but, safe to say, he did take about 13 attempts at most, which isn't a lot, but with Ice Titan grinding... Yeah, he got cut down to just the only winning attempt on my recording of KH1FM... Which, even then, were mostly me facing Sephiroth at few lower levels than recommended (and not having some Elixirs to deal with his attacks, until I fought him with them at level 90, so my replaying of this game years later, as I re-understood his moveset and skills...)... But, regardless of what I'm saying. "Well done." And, I hope your enjoyment with Re:COM/COM was enjoyable as well, even with the change in combat with that card system... I know that that game was ahead of its time, but, it was also the easiest by far to somewhat understand...

Now I'm curious how that new staff and shield compare to their ultimate weapons. If you beat the Hades cup solo you get one and if you beat it with the time limit you get the other. You can also synthesize Soras ultimate weapon but it takes a lot of grinding for materials.

I've been wondering if maybe they've kinda "soft-retconned" it into being a certain character that I don't to name because of spoilers, but would probably make a lot more sense than Mickey. Until something confirms it, though, that's all just speculation.

I still remember beating the game for the first time back on the ps3 (I had gotten to the second fight with ansem and almost beat him once on ps2 but the system got unplugged and I Iost my progress although funny enough I ended up beating kingdoms hearts 2 on ps2 long before I beat kingdoms hearts one but even now after 17 years of playing the games and beating the series 7 times now I still get chills at “I know now without a doubt kingdom hearts is light!” and cry at the end of this game 🥹
