I believe I watched the same video. It was a bloke over east and his mate was a pro snapper fisherman. And he said his mate was happy for him to share his way in his video. He also talked about fishing the single fish on the sounder not big schools, single better fish to catch more quality fish. Same video for sure. Just checked back on the video, his channel is Outer Line. Titled once you try this- there is no going back.

Yep thats the one. inshore where we fish is a bit different to their set uo and with our wind in Perth drifting individual fish would be tricky. maybe with an electric and spot lock i could do it. but the mono thing kinda make sense so figured id give it a go. Im not super fussed if I catch or not just love being out there, so happy to experiment . Ive fixed the dodgy guide so will try again soon . not really the best time of year for snapper here, but worth a shot. Cheers

Great vid Scott. I saw the same vid and am also going to experiment with mono, but will likely just use longer leader and see how that goes. Love the vids, your approach to fishing (ie fish are a bonus) and conservation, which I also try and follow. Gotta say I would have taken home the two dhu’s though…. That is enough for a decent party!

Definately some fish hang out there , maybe its just easier to target them in that area rather than in amoungst all the heavy reef with all the pickers,. Works for me. Cheers as always Lockie. Tight lines.

Yep. Mono is great for plenty of things but you just cant beat the pulling power and the amount of line you can fit on when using braid. If you tie a SOLID fg knot and run 2-4m of leader then you are sweet
@michaelwest188

Great vid mate in nice conditions. Two solid inshore dhus well done. On the circles my reading and experience is to apply reasonable drag, count to 5 when the reel sings, and wind it in …no strike.

Where we fish here in Tas, there's huge amounts of tide, so the thinner braid is a must. I just run 3-4 m of 25-30lb mono leader with no dramas. Also much more abrasion resistent than braid.
@Saltfix
@Saltfix 4 ай бұрын
Yep I think running a longer leader could be the go, I really like the feel of braid and it doesn’t struggle with like twist as much as mono.

I love your videos how your willing to try new things, and old things in this case as well 😅👍. I my self tie a longer than standard top shot of mono or fluro about 6 to 8m. I to my self have a shimano bantam magcast sx10 i believe to be a 1982. It was my reel as a kid not as old as yours, but i am not as old as you either 😂. I recently referbished it the best i could and re-greased. Unfortunately my overhead rod is completly cactus, but i will work something out for nostalgia reasons 👍. We do use some abu 7000 reels that are also 30 years old and they are in awesome condition still. That was a awesome fish for 10lb line looked loads of fun, this is exactly how i fish in port philip bay, but i don't have to worry about the bottom as much as you..

@Saltfix i recently been buying flurocarbon leader, i have all ways used mono. Technically the ones i got are copolymer so part fluro with mono coating. They are low streach and still hold a nice knot. I recently purchased berkley flurosheild copolymer 300 yard 274m in the bargain bin for $5 and a asari copolymer 250m for $14 (normal price). Both feel about the same with fairly low streach and really nice to tie. I wonder what it would be like a full spool on a rod compared to mono, its cheap enough. I do have the black magic flurocarbon copolymer (black lable white writing) it also feels similar to these cheapies but $20 for 100m is getting pricy and thats a cheap compared to the big brands. You can pay $20 and more for 50m and 20m so just keep a eye on it if you want to try. Mono i have all ways uses maxima ultragreen and just love it. Its my goto standard mono where the streach and memory isn't as bad as some i have used. I have some spools of platypus and hate it. It seems to have really bad line memory paired with massive streach.

I use monno on all my surf reels, daiwa sealine 30, penn squals casting specias. Catches less weed, casts a mile. Not that you need huge distances here. But if I need to, I can punch a 5oz luer 180m, with a bit of refined technique I should get over 200m

So you sit on the reef and fish/burley off the back of it, I would have thought letting the burley drift into the reef would bring the fish from the reef upto the boat, obviously not!
@Saltfix
@Saltfix 4 ай бұрын
I think snapper travel the back edge of the reefs wher it meets sand patrolling for baitfish which get pushed into the back edge then congregated , i may be wrong but it mostly works. Dhu fish like to live on that back edge too where the reef meets the sand. always exceptions to the rule. im no expert just showing how I do it. other do it different.

@Saltfix
@Saltfix 4 ай бұрын
Yeah true that. Braid does have a very cool sound when its being ripped off under pressure, not moving away from braid just trying something different, and fishing with the old school gear was kinda fun. Think running a longer leader on the braid is the compromise.

Your putting too much meat in the gape, not allowing the hook to do its job and roll around the fishes mouth unobstructed to catch the barb. Either smaller bait, pin the bait differently or larger hook.

Yup braid is sh@# I hate it ya pull to many hooks. I don't know about the fish caring about it because I have mates that use braid and they seem to get there fair share of fish. Maybe when the water is real clear the fish can see it more I don't know 👍
