Hey everyone! In the beginning of the video I mention that I haven't used pastels in years, I meant to specify that I haven't used regular OIL pastels in years. I have used soft pastels, pastel pencils, pans and water-soluble crayons, some of which I have used on this channel in the past but not regular oil pastels. I just wanted to mention it in case I wasn't clear in my voice-over to avoid causing any confusion. Enjoy the video and thanks for watching! 😊

I’d love to see more oil pastels videos. I’m still a beginner in drawing so I’m sticking to graphite and charcoal for the moment. But I always loved watching oil pastels videos. Being so unpopular only made me more interested in them. I’ll definitely try them out once I jump into colors.

I agree, the unpopularity is what made me look into them more too! I will definitely have to do more in the future! Thanks for watching!

If you put your paper on a warm surface, like a pancake griddle on the lowest setting, you can bled the pastels very easily without using liquid blenders like the odorless one you used. No waiting for the liquid to dry and also allows you to use paper that doesn’t hold up to liquids.

Hi there (again)! Yes, I've fallen in love with oil pastels, too. I am finding that they work well on many surfaces, especially those with good tooth. They really shine on Canson Mi-Teintes pastel paper and Clairefontaine Pastelmat. Perhaps no surprise there. I currently have the full set of Mungyo Gallery Artists' oil pastels (from Jerry's, Blick doesn't carry them). These are Korean made and are a bit softer than the Van Goghs. Very good pigmentation and blendability. Jerry's told me that the Mungyos are lightfast, but Mungyo's website doesn't provide lightfast ratings for individual colors. So...? I also have a 24 set of Sennelier, but eventually I plan on getting a full set of the Caran d'Ache Neopastels (when I get enough $$$$$$!). I KNOW they are lightfast. Oil pastels are really fun. I think your effort in this video came out really great! Thanks.

Hello again! I need to try these on Pastelmat next! I love Mi Teintes, it's one of my favorite papers for colored pencil but I haven't tried oils pastels on it yet. I will keep that in mind! I have a few of the Sennelier pastels as well, but it's just a sample set so I haven't had the chance to get a real feel for them, and I haven't gotten the Neo Pastels yet either, because of the price lol. I would like to try them though! Mungyo pastels do look nice, but I also could not find any definitive lightfast information on them, so I haven't bothered to try them. Thanks for watching!!

Those blueberries look good enough to eat. I have a whole set of oil pastels. I drew some pieces of fruit with them and worked on blending them with my fingers and OMS. They haven't become one of my go to mediums though.

Thank you Sara! Yeah, it's an interesting medium for sure, not sure if it will become a go to medium for me either, but I definitely like them a lot more than I expected to. They do seem to work great for fruit. I need more practice with them for sure but I did have a lot of fun with this piece.

Never would I have thought of using oil pastels on sanded paper! I use them on cheap drawing paper, which doesn't really have much texture at all. I'll have to give this combination a try because your results speak for themselves! Stunning.

Thank you Ramo, yes you should definitely try them on sanded paper, I really enjoyed the process, I was able to get so many layers! I even spray varnished it after and am so happy with the results!

After six months on watercolor pencils, I am full gear on soft pastels and now on oil pastels. Soft pastel is brutally messy, you should practice avoiding the pastel mess(iness). As usual, whatever you do is excellent, which is quite normal from an educated and graduated professional.
@CautionArtistatPlay

Thank you Miklos! You are right, soft pastels are really messy, definitely a fun medium though! I haven't worked with soft pastels in a while. I will have to do a soft pastel piece once my studio is up and running again. It's not a medium I would want to use around my pets, so it will have to wait until my space is renovated.

I have a small sample pack of them that only has like 5 or 6 pastels in it, but I haven't used them much on an actual piece. I tried to use a bit of the white one in this piece but the consistency was sooo creamy and different than the other pastels I was using that I got a bit intimidated and backed off from it. I will have to try them separately. They are almost like a lipstick consistency so I'm interested in trying them out!

Wonderful wonderful…..I too bought oil pastels a few months ago….found it too messy but loved it….now I too am going to wear gloves……and….what are your thoughts on varnishing? Or can we just put it behind glass?
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 3 жыл бұрын
I varnished mine with a spray varnish and workable fixative by Krylon, but on the sanded paper I found that the pigment stayed put better than it does on regular paper, even without varnish.

This is so amazing😍I use oil pastels often, but they are very oily as the name says and I find it impossible to use colored pencils to go over the oil pastel layer...it simply smears and ruins everything...

Thank you! For this one, I think I mostly used Polychromos, Prismacolors, and Derwent Drawing. Other brands will work with this method, too. The paper is pretty receptive to the layering process.
