Oil pastel + oil-based colored pencil is the less messy equivalent to soft pastels and pastel pencils... this lady knows what's up
@unboundbytiffany
@unboundbytiffany Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if that's factual, both in the equivalent comparison and the less messy aspect haha. Oil pastels are quite messy and less easy to clean up in my opinion. But also oil based color pencils have a whole different binder in it than pastels altogether and has wax in it as well. Whereas oil pastels, I'm not sure their exact binders and if they have wax as well, but from what I've learned and experienced they do not. But I do think oil pastels and even wax pastels are wonderful with color pencil, just as soft pastels and pastel pencils etc also can work nicely with color pencils. Everything goes with color pencil. Hahaha

Hi Shana! Like I said on Instagram, great work! Yes, I, for one, would like to see you do a slower tutorial with the oil pastel sometime. Also, I agree that you are likely to really enjoy doing a landscape in oil pastel. With the great landscapes you do, I think you would do very well with the oil pastels in that subject. I particularly like the way I can easily achieve a impressionistic look with oil pastels. Recently, I have used oil pastel on Stonehenge's new black Aqua cold-pressed watercolor paper, and on Clairefontaine Pastelmat. They work really well on both. I've been using Caran d'Ache Neopastels, which I love. They are lightfast and almost as soft as Sennelier. I love the effect of the pastels on a black paper for landscapes. I did a landscape of an ancient Scottish castle on a loch recently that came out very nicely, I think. Don't know if you saw it on Instagram... I think I posted there (I'll have to check). Anyway, another fine video, and I look forward to whatever you post next. Take care... bye!

Thank you! I will definitely have to try that paper! I have heard of the Neopastels, but haven't tried them myself. May have to sometime.
@atvalleau
@atvalleau 3 жыл бұрын
@@CautionArtistatPlay Yes, the Pastelmat is also a bit pricey, but it is very good quality, too. The Stonehenge Aqua is not too expensive for an 11" x 14" pad (what I usually buy). I initially tried the Aqua with colored pencils.... nyahh! The pencils tend to abrade the paper very easily. Not good, but great with the pastels! Probably great with watercolors, too, since it was made for that. Later!
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 3 жыл бұрын
I have some pastelmat and have used it for soft pastels, but not for oil pastels, not extensively anyway. I haven't tried the black Stonehenge though, definitely sounds intriguing.
@atvalleau
@atvalleau 3 жыл бұрын
@@CautionArtistatPlay Well, I think getting the Stonehenge Aqua might be worth a try. And I don't mean to make it sound like it is not a good paper. But it's different than the regular Stonehenge I usually use. The Aqua is very soft. I tried colored pencil with oms (thoroughly dried!). Nope. No matter how lightly I worked, the surface eventually started to tear. Even with Inktense, you have to be careful. I recently drew two colorful Macaws with Inktense on the Aqua. After putting down an initial layer or two with the pencil and activating it with water, I then used my wet brush on the tips of the pencils to paint on the pigment for the rest of the piece. It came out well and is brilliant on that black paper. Maybe it is just my heavey hand, but I couldn't work with this paper for my usual colored pencil techniques. If you get some (Blick has it), I'd be very interested in your thoughts on it. Maybe do a review sometime? Anyway, thanks for your videos, and for taking the time in reading and answering my missives! Much appreciated.

Hi there and thank you for watching! I don't think I will be posting this particular piece as a slower version, because it was a labor intensive project with hours of footage involved. However, I do plan on doing an oil pastel project geared more specifically towards beginners in the future. That one will be slower than this. I have not tried oil pastels on canvas, but I feel like it would be challenging to cover the canvas texture. I like the sanded paper because its a nice even surface that can still take a lot of layers. Thanks again!

This is so awesome!! Now I need to know...what type of color pencils do you use? Reason why I ask is because oil pastels are my prefered medium...but as we all know...they aren't the best for fine details. I saw your white pencils do a great job bringing out the white touches...so I have to know what type of pencil it is. Is it your typical pencil or are they oil based??
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 2 жыл бұрын
I mostly use Faber-Castell Polychromos when working with oil pastels. They are oil-based and oil-based pencils work best on the Lux Archival paper I am using. Normally the white Polychromos doesn't show up that well, but it's a dream on this paper. Occasionally I will pull in a Derwent Drawimh Chinese white which is softer but is my all time favorite white pencil.
@kristenr1986
@kristenr1986 2 жыл бұрын
Ok awesome! Currently using smooth surface paper since I like the fact I don't have to struggle blending the colors together unlike the paper that have "teeth". I discovered (not to long ago) eye liner pencils work wonders when getting the more dark details. But the white doesn't pop out as brightly as I like. They do work , just lacks the "pop" I'm seeking. So I wasn't sure what pencil would work the best for the paper I use, and I haven't yet come across any tutorial that covers my situation. lol
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm not so sure the Polychromos would work as well over oil pastels on smooth paper. I personally don't like smooth paper for my oil pastels because I feel like I can't layer enough on it. I like Lux Archival because it has a nice evenly sanded surface which still allows for easy blending, but can take a lot of layers, which makes it easier for white highlights. It is pricy though. I have heard people say they like to use a white Sennelier oil pastel for their highlights, even if the rest of the oil pastels are a different brand. It's really soft and buttery, almost like lipstick. Sennelier is pricy too, but open stock may not be too bad if you just get the white. The eyeliner trick sounds like a fun idea, but you may want to be careful if you are selling your work because products that aren't made specifically for art may not be archival down the line.

@@lndlcy Just to clarify a bit more, because I think I know why you got that impression; if you hear me refer to an oil-based pencil, it means an oil-based colored pencil. Colored pencils, by nature, are made up of wax and oils. Some brands lean more towards the oily side and are easier to get fine details with, and others lean more towards the wax side, making them softer and easier to blend. So that's why they are referred to as oil-based and wax-based respectively, even though they all have a bit of each in their ingredients. The brand I am using the most here are the Faber-Castell Polychromos, which are advertised as an oil-based colored pencil. Oil-based colored pencils work great on this paper! Though I did use a few "wax-based" as well, such as the Prismacolor Premier. The materials I used are listed in the description of the video if you would like to see what else I used. Just hit "more" to see the full description! I hope this helps!!

Yes! I find they work better with oil pastels than pastel pencils do. If I were using soft pastels, then pastel pencils would work fine.
