Classism is a fact of life I never paid attention to either until I went to University. My cousin is a freshman at UCLA and one of her roommate’s parents are Dentist and Doctor. She said her roommate looks down on her and their other working class roommate. At least she is learning about the world early. The reason Americans don’t notice classism is because America has the largest middle class in the world. Visit any 3rd world country and you can see the class divide when you step off the plane. There is virtually no middle class in 3rd world countries so the difference in lifestyles is so contrasting you cannot notice the class divide. Owning a car in a 3rd world country makes you rich. Rich and working class in America owns a car. You don’t notice classism until you attend a research university or private university where rich kids and working middle class kids are taking the same courses and it’s the first time a public school kid and private school kid intermingle. You notice you are in a lower class at university when your classmate says they went to south of France for the summer and you say you worked a job lol.

This is one of the most insightful videos that I have seen about MDE. I'm glad this came into my feed and it helped me understand the class system more. This was a missing link that I needed. I used to go to MDE for 15 yrs and recenlty have decreased my trips due to the perception of Gringos. I may get hit for saying that but I'm a people watcher and I am always see what is happening. I study Geopolitics but sometimes I miss the little things. Thanks for this great video.

As I visit Colombia more, I'm starting to notice these nuances. Foreigners say they love Colombia because the people are warm, this type of thing is the exact opposite lf that.

US is very class based. In Junior High school, people who are popular are ones that can afford name brand clothes, you are teased if you get your clothes are Walmart. If anything, Latin America in general are not as "class" based.

I'm surprised that people were so petty at the school you worked at. They definitely did you a favor by showing their true colors fairly soon. And it also goes to show you that those people are sheep. Some of them (presumably) decided to believe rumors and go along with the crowd of haters & gossipers. But this goes back to one of your earlier videos in which you said it was harder to find solid ppl in Colombia than other places (not that there's tons of solid people in general)

so True. the Classism thing is real outside of the US and Canada and maybe UK. In the US , rich guy can pick up a girl at McDonalds or a trailer park and its not a big deal. In other countries, u will be shamed by family, friends, colleagues. but the truth is that the most down to earth people u will ever meet are from the so-called lower class and typically the most good looking women u will meet come from that too, its crazy

brother i just went through that with my girl. going into the relationship with her I told her we gotta communicate. next thing you know she's hitting me with the silent treatment just like yours. me being from toronto and her from medellin, i'm trying to explain to her that it's nobody's fault other than the fact that we come from different cultures. so the things i'm good with are not always acceptable to her and vice versa. it's a learning process for real. great stories as always my guy

so one time I met this super hot Colombian in Mexico, and the first thing I asked her on our date was - tell me about your family. She tells me I have 7 brothers and sisters, from 3 different fathers. I immediately thought that she was a daughter of a prostitute, but now I am not sure what to think, maybe her fathers died in the fight. Any way I did not speak Spanish enough to have a relationship with her.

Your right I use to to want to live in Colombia but I just see how the people are and how they do things it’s un morally It’s better places out there you might have to spend a lil bit more money but it’s worth with dealing with less bullshit

What places fit your description? Please enlighten me. I think it is best if you just don't make a statement without supporting it. In my opinion people put too many unreasonable expectations on the "new" place and wind up disappointed.

@@mcluvin65 Costa Rica 🇨🇷 better people more friendly the girls have cars and speak decent English Santo Domingo better as well Panama 🇵🇦 a good country to live and have fun but things is people don’t want to pay that price Colombia a cheap thrill that can cost you but to each is own

@@Tubiafrica well there is absolutely no comparison between Santo Domingo and Medellin, Bogota, Cali. Santo Domingo's crime rate, lack of infrastructure and general level of poverty is much much higher, you say not willing to pay the price? Santo Domingo's best area barely touches Strata 4 in Colombia , there are no areas like Bogota North, envigado or El Tesoro (naming just 3) in Santo Domingo. As for Costa Rica I agree it is beautiful and more expensive a good choice for an affluent expat. Panama, I cannot say but I am sure it is a suitable option, but Santo Domingo is not even in the top ten in the DR. I admit I am biased as I am married to a Colombiana and have always enjoyed my time there.

The class divide in Colombia is huge. But I am assuming that neither of these people were over 30 or from Bogota. I found that the older folks from Bogota are very progressive regardless of which class they're from. Or maybe I just attract progressive and more enlightened individuals.

I can totally see this story being true. Some of the ultra rich snobby folks in Latin America can be unbelieavably classist and xenophobic. I have dealt with this myself on a few different occassions in a couple of different countries. It's almost comical.

The same exists in Venezuela (but less and primarily based on the level of money) and Ecuador (but more in certain Andean cities and primarily based on family origins) so it's no surprise that it exists in Colombia as well. It's sad of course.

@ej1692 It has been our nature since the Spanish, Italians, French and Portuguese came to latin america. They discriminated de native Indian, and the African slaves. And today they still do the same. The southern European wealthy descendants discriminate the African and native Indian poor descendants.
