I second that. You’re doing pretty good with the fly rod. Indicator rigs are a pain to cast and tricky to fish well. Good job! I much prefer fishing drys or swinging wets to nymphing. That said, for small shallow water like that try a yarn indicator, they land softer and are less likely to spook fish if your technique is less than perfect.

Some tips for you: Minimize fly line on the water. This will reduce the drag that creates an unnatural drift. The best way to do this is to keep the rod tip up and extend your arm toward the fly. Ideally, the only thing on the water is you indicator. Imagine a line between your thumb, rod tip, and fly. Do not break that line all the way through the drift. Retrieve line or mend line out of the rod as necessary. Finally, roll casting is your best friend, especially with multitasking fly nymph rigs on small creeks. Good luck learning!

I'm not a fly fisher, although I've caught wild browns on small streams, but surely its easier to fish down and across from the head of the pool using a short line and letting the current pull the fly across then strip it up the near bank?

I know its an older video, but a few things to help your fly fishing: 1. Do not cast a “nymph rig” like its a dry fly or a streamer. Simply flick your wrist and roll cast, especially in narrow water like that. Casting like that with an indicator is how you get wind knots and spook fish. Consider softer indicators then those rubber ones. NZ wool is the go to. 2. Fish two flies while nymphing. Tie three pieces of tippet together using two double surgeons knots at a 16 inch interval, clip one of the two tags from each knot. Tie your flies to the remaining tags. This will make the presentation more natural and allow you to fish two sections of the water column, thus doubling your chances. You said a fish struck at your indicator, consider using a foam based fly like a foam grasshopper as your indicator, then you’d be fishing three flies at one time. (To cast this mess of flies refer to point 1.) 3. Add split shot or fish tungsten beaded flies to get one or both of your flies down. If you had done the above, you probably would’ve caught triple the amount of fish.

Beautiful video! That was a pleasure to watch. I was taught that after you have a strike or land a fish, switch your fly. If I could make a suggestion to help your casting and save some energy, try keeping your shoulder and elbow stiffer, and focus on crisp stops with your wrist on your forward and backward cast. I did it wrong for years so hopefully this saves some time. Cheers from Vancouver Island!

Maybe a little tip for future fly fishing adventures. I fish a lot of Spring Creeks and similar waters in Montana, and you always have to assume that the fish can see you when you're standing over the bank like that. Try to kneel or stand further away from the bank while you are casting, and you'll get more fish.

Hey man! With nymph rigs I reccomend trying two flies in a line! The top a bit bigger fly like size 16-12. I really like San Juan worms and prince nymphs and then tie that on like normal, then take a 12-18 inch line and tie it to the bottom of that hook and tie on your smaller bug. I love using sows and rainbow warriors, and pheasant tails. Size 18-22. Then fish with the Bobber deeper until you think it’s about on the bottom. Use splitshot accordingly. I kill the fish with this method. Matching the hatch is the name of the game. Check under rocks near bank and match

I stumbled onto this video, crazy thing is I paid to fish that creek a few years ago. I live in St. Louis County and that creek is about an hour and half from my house. I usually fish near there for smallmouth bass in the meramec river and the small creeks that run into it. I fished it on a hot summer day using spinning gear, Im not really a fly fisherman, and caught quite a few nice trout, mostly in the bigger creek (Dry Creek) next to the spring creek. Interesting fact about that place, the rental cabins on the property were relocated from other parts of Missouri. It is a beautiful property.

Yeah, some prices are ridiculous! Where I live we have a couple of REALLY good salmon streams. The one I visit costs around $20 per day and I think that is ok. The other one is mostly consisting of land owners that will not sell to individuals, only to groups, meaning you get the right to fish 10 people for roughly $600. The trout lake I usually use is $40 for a year.

@@ExplorishingAdventures For guiding, I would be prepared to pay alot. Thing is, I came into fly fishing from spin fishing the salts just 5 years ago. And fishing the sea is free of charge, and you get the occasional exciting fish. I get that some land owners want to make money off their land, and let me quote a school teacher and fisherman from my neck of the woods: "If the landowner makes active arrangements on his/her lands to accomodate fishermen, if he/she actively manage the fish population, then I have no problem paying for that work as a fisherman. But if they do not facilitate fishing spots and do not manage the fish population in any way shape or form, then I will fish there for free.".

The video looks awesome. From someone whose got a few years of fly fishing under their belt, your flies are probably way too big for the target size. Even larger fish are normally going to eat smaller stuff unless it's a streamer or you're somewhere with hefty size insect life. My go-to in a stream like that would be a size 20 midge or hares ear. I would suggest learning some euro nymphing/high sticking for water like that too. Ditch that big strike indicator, we all do it when we are new but it adds something that's not realistic to your set up. Get a piece of yarn and tie it on as an indicator, hold your rod tip out and keep the yarn on top of the water that or just use a meaty dry fly. Then below add a little bit of tungsten stick on weight and have a tippet ring with your longer tippet strand carrying maybe a little larger fly like a scud or larger hares ear. Then on a shorter strand attached to the tippet ring add a small midge. You'll snag fish all day with a more intricate set up like this but even just a big meaty dry as an indicator with a bead head midge below will work too, that was and always is my go-to easy setup. If you ever wanna go fish holler you can message me on IG Michael_NaturalVisions I also shoot outdoor tv shows so I know my way around a camera or two.

Lol he caught two average stocked rainbows a small one and a baby and drove for two hours that’s $12.50 per fish in admission alone nevermind his own flies, rod, reel, net, gas money and miles on his car dude was paying like $25 a fish to catch average or below average fish lmao

I’m from upstate New York and I have some amazing trout spots among many other species. I would love to make the trip to where you fished in this video. I know a lot of people don’t like to say where their honey holes are but I’m the guy that will let other fishermen know where a great hole is , what species are in there and what exactly they are hitting on. Keep the videos coming!!

It's good to have someone from your area doing KZbin video to have a lot of followers keep up the good job maybe one day I can get in touch with you and show you where to catch some really big Bass.

I just found your channel the other day. I love the fact that I am only a few others north of you. Anyway, I had no idea that their are any trout in Missouri I have been fly fishing for about a couple years for anything that will go after my fly. Except for the two times a year Il stoks pounds with trout.

Hey man looking good! Glad you got out on the water! One piece of advice I would offer is when you finish your cast do bring the rod low to the water. What it’s doing is the line closer to the rod tip slaps down first before the fly. Keep it up and pointed toward your desired target. Also I’ve found AirLock strike indicators far better than the one you currently have on! Check then out!

Another great one. More fly fishing videos would be so much appreciated. Btw, use a bjg dry fly as a indicator.
