I'm with you. I've worked hard for everything and paid for my own schooling w/o scholarships and have NO debt. I'm now remodeling a wreck of a trailer and doing most of it myself. I've done remodeling jobs on the homes I've had over the years and still learn as I go with new things. I wish your company was here in AZ. I'd volunteer with your company just to learn more. So glad your company is a success. I can tell you are a good moral person and sure you are doing what you do to make money. But I'm sure you also do what you can to help your customers out and make them happy. Regards.

Yeah, I agree with the debt, I own a concrete construction business and have lots of debt. It adds a lot of stress when your monthly bills add up to some serious dollars. I'm chopping down the debt and in about 2 years I will be debt free and own a whole lot of equipment with no payments, can't wait.

Good job brother. I am in the same boat as you are. I hate debt also. I started my own house building company last year and hopefully I can grow it in the future. I had to put my big boy pants on as a junior in high school as I became a dad. I managed to graduate and chose to work in order to maintain my family and give them a roof. I’m 29 years old now and I saved up money bought me an acre and built my dream home out of pocket. Sold it last year and that’s when I started my company. My passion for building came out and I found out what I was meant to do. I fell in love with the building process and building science. I am in the process of building a spec home in the Houston area and hope to get custom built work in the future. You’re definitely a person I admire and look up to, been following you since the beginning.

You did the right thing. I give big tips for that same reason. Anyone I see *trying* needs to know they will eventually succeed. I sent out *hundreds* of emails when I was looking for work out of college. I got a fabulous job (this was a long time ago) paying more than anyone I graduated with because the employer liked my gumption. It was in a different state, they didn't come to my university, and I wanted to get a job in Texas. I got a list of all employers over a certain size that I knew employed my specialty. It took a lot of mails, but I got that job. Always encourage that behavior - it helps emphasize the need to work and to try.

Making the time to take the young man's request seriously, instead of saying we don't offer anything like like that& blowing him off shows what I have thought since I started following your posts. You are an honest , good hearted person. You have top notch work ethic! Sound advice on debt, business, building, lots of helpful & interesting lessons on every post. You explain things clearly. Well spoken. Sometimes its almost painful to listen to some people talk because of the way they speak or their tone or delievery. But you have an easy no b.s. way about you that I appreciate. I respect the way you do business, your Barndos are built with pride, no cutting corners. Ive joked with my husband that your prob. The best builder out there, but prob. rough to work for. Your kind of a hard ass on your guys & a perfectionist. BUT you have standards we should all strive to live up to. You make them better by showing them You work hard, have consistant high end results -that makes you succsesful. U do treat them well, I loved the lotto post at Christmas! Its nice to have a cool Boss who does stuff like that. Plus you get down & dirty & work your ass off along side them. Mad respect for that as well! I'm sure the kid you helped is so grateful & he sounds like he has a lot going for him. Your the bomb Eric!! Your whole crew as well! They get after it, great group! Hope one day to have a Badass Barndo with a Big ass fan & a beautiful shiny concrete floor!! Thanks for being a good guy!

Hello Paul Ellis here from Killeen, I watch you and I think you are a special person. I was working on my building to send some plans to Elliott, I was looking at my garage doors that I paid 2400 dollars to have installed by overhead an the screws are already falling out, used too small of screw for the slot just poor workman ship. I see the care you have in your heart, if only other business would do the same what a great place it would be. I spent 21 years in the Army, learned all I do from school of hard knock , an people like you or just doing. I had never build a building but I started out with part of a used one an did it all an some help from my wife. I learned to paint cars the same way, going to school , an asking questions. You are wright about the money, it will keep you down if you borrow an before long the tunnel get so long you can never see day light.I see every day what I did wrong in my building an you showing yours just makes me want to do a do over but I did not borrow so I have be working on it for over seven years. I am going to Florida Sunday to finish painting my 58 dodge but when I get back I want to meet you, Thanks for the teaching.

I paid for my 1st two degrees out of pocket, after saving everything I could during my life. I want to pursue my MS degree next, but it all depends, its $21,000 just for tuition alone. No grants, scholarships available, most companies might help. I'm super interested in pole barn style homes, I don't live in TX, but we want to build a 5 bedroom 3 bath home. Completely ADA compliant for our oldest child.

You sir are a class act. I stumbled onto one of you videos last week and liked what I saw. I I saw in the last video, while you were helping Leon operate the Koerig, that you have Dave's Total Money Makeover book. My wife and I were introduced to that book 2 years ago and it has made all the difference. I am self employed and unfortunately accrued a bunch of credit card debt. You are correct when you say Debt is evil. It takes a special person to do what you did. I have been impressed with your videos so much that I went all the way back to episode 1. I am now at this episode 69 and will complete all of them. My wife and I are in the process of buying some property within your 100 mile range. I agree 1000% on this. I was going to a university (NMSU) for engineering and my scholarships paid almost everything (paid off the rest) now I'm going to a junior collage and having close to 13k per year in my pocket after books and tuition in a 3-4 year dential program and will have around to 40k in mt pocket from school to buy land and build a 800 sq ft off the grid home (gonna build the home with my father in law) and have a career helping people that pays really well. In my experince university's are a scam and most colleges are I was raised by my grandfather who was a pipeline and that old man knows way more than any of my professors. All of my family is like that, so my advice is good luck to the soon to be college student and I hope he does his best to stay outta debt!!!!

Eric (Erik?), a thought about go-getters: When irritated, confronted, or otherwise given a negative situation, I've found it best to regard it in this manner: those things I encounter upon which I can act to correct, I'm obligated (for my own peace of mind) to do so. Those things which I cannot correct, I'm obligated (again, for my own peace of mind) to accept and move on, living the best I can under the new (enforced) conditions. I’m well-aware this is essentially identical to the apocryphal Irish prayer. Whether I discovered this philosophy myself or subliminally appropriated it is irrelevant; it works for me. But there's a logical extension to that: If I have a goal I wish to meet, it is incumbent upon me to work at my greatest ability to achieve that goal. To not do so and then excuse failure as something I could not change is a lie to myself. That... is a go-getter.
