I painted NEW Warhammer in the 90s style!

What’s allowed
---
ANY “Ork” or “Undead” style miniature, GW or not. Retro is great, modern models are great, 3d printed is great, have fun!
By “Ork”, we mean any typical “green skin” model, goblins, grots, nobs, and big stompy walkers and vehicles are fine too!
By “Undead” we mean literally anything spooky. Skeletons, witches, vampires, zombies, ghosts. Basically, if there could be a really bad halloween b-movie about it, it qualifies.
Anyone can enter, regardless of age or location.

Tip for painting the shield would be to paint the whole thing gold and then in fill the red bits sounds counter intuitive but find it tends to be easier.

You're right about poses making bits hard to reach. This is why priming black is so attractive! For those afraid of losing vibrancy then start with a very heavy dry brush of white, it won't hit anything you can't reach and so leaves it black.

Ahh, that brings me back to the good old days, when an Undead Wight wouldn't be caught alive without some bright primary coloured robes outside of his crypt. Yes, they were tattered from a 1000 years of slumber and the occasional reawakened attack on the Empire but they were spotless. Absolutely love the small detail of the beginning of the video set in 4:3 ratio! Thats gold. My Undead army is almost entirely from the 90s, including a large number of the original skeletal horsemen and chariots. Love this challenge. However, I also have a stack of the Ork Goffs from the 2nd ed 40k boxed set. Hard decision....

It's funny, I have had a really similar scheme (sans the red and gold shields) for my Soulblight/Vamp Counts stuff in mind cause Ive always loved the purple of the Kastellai, seeing a similar colorscheme in the thumbnail was awesome, if unintentional 🤣. I've found that 2 Thin Coats amethyst rayne, sorcerer's cloak, to runic purple looked a lot like this and it felt very much like the old look feel I was going for

I often struggled with things like the gold details on the shield, and I've since discovered that a metallic sharpie marker makes it an absolute breeze.

I'm currently working on a unit of ten skeletons with spears. But it's the Wargames Atlantic skeletons, so there's no fiddly armor or clothing to complicate matters (save the sergeant heads, with the helmet and head crest). So it's been very simple to paint. Just bone and metal for the weapons and shields. Although there's a little splash of color I've done for the spears. I went over the spear shafts with a dark brown Not!Contrast paint from Warcolours, then stippled on a couple layers of red in a rough fashion. Creating the impression of spears painted red in ages past, but the paint has since started to flake off.

I've been painting a fantasy orcs and goblins army at the moment with a goblin green base rim. I have been mixing Vallejo Goblin Green and Intermediate Green 50:50, and it is spot on. I'm saving my actual goblin green for special occasions. haha

You can use liquid masking for the shield when doing the gold. Otherwise, the model looks fantastic, nice job 👍

I really like your spoopy boi, I think the cloth came out a bit light, maybe a dark blue ink plus the lilac and maybe a drop of black as your shadow then layer up from there rather than starting with the mid-tone, though that might have made it too dark for oldhammer. Or maybe start the same but then use a purple wash/ink to darken it down while adding saturation(something like a Warlock purple wash).

Ah, this is partially why I use black primer and then spray with white. I don't need to worry about putting a brush in those dark areas because they look like dark shadow.

Got some old Tomb King Skeletons on order from eBay for this. I did some of the original plastic Skeletons from WFB recently and they turned out great, but I think just repainting the base of one of them to be goblin green seems a bit of a cheat so I'll take what I learned from them (and my Bonereapers) and see what I can do with the Tomb Kings...
