Nice video as always George. I have wrapped my papaya plants with frost cloth to protect them from the snails and rats as well. They eat the trunk of the papaya plants ! The big plant is heading towards the 5th winter, currently has two fruits hanging on it.

They eat mine too, but not much that can be done when away.

I didn't plant any papaya because of their tropical nature but they've been popping up around the garden from all the food scraps we bury. They grow FAST! One already has a few fruits on which *** might *** ripe in coming Spring.

As you said in your video success is fruit. I can not clam Fruit yet from my large Papaya it flowered but no fruit set which is why I put another one in Spring to help set fruit. The tree is bloody large now I got about 30 to 40 flowers but not one set fruit. So more than one papaya is needed when you find which spot works for you in growing these’s ? At least when you find that spot that works your will know where to plant them. All the best with it I hope it works for you. 🙏🌴

I lived in Melbourne in 1971 and it was much colder than here in 9B arizona where my large 17 year old papaya sees little cold damage since global warming kicked in 6 or 7 years ago.

Melbourne's 9B comes with 5 long months of on and off frosty mornings, unlike many other 9B zones.

Interesting. I’m still counting on the bad Papaya number 2. Agree it doesn’t look good at the moment and you may think it not going to survive. It has a lot of protection from what you need the sunlight maybe a problem but that will change if get past it’s first winter. As for the Shade it look like your spot it about the same as my Papaya with shade so maybe it due to just being a young tree. At this stage the last papaya in your video looks the best. But we have a lot of cold and water on the way in the months ahead that will change everything. It will be interesting your next update later in the year how they all have gone ? Hopefully the one I’m counting on is not dead and make it to the warmer months ? Time will tell as the trees that make it get stronger the better they will do in there spots. Interesting out of the 4 spots which one will end up the winner as time goes on.

Sometimes it luck with Gardening an example is Bananas you have tons of flowers yet I have none. And they are supposed to be cold hardy. I find listening to a lot of gardeners everybody has different problems. It’s interesting with the Papaya I will check on Wednesday my new small Southern Red papaya that I planted in Spring next to the full size one and the Babaco if it is still good ? It’s interesting what is different ? As from what I can see the spots are very much the same. Maybe the roots of the papaya have not yet met with the Babaco yet ? which I believe helps. You Babaco look big and old of a tree to reach the Papaya so no problem there. It maybe just time needed ? If my new papaya I planted in Spring this year is ok and healthy then it is why ? In Reasons. I let you know in the next number of days how the new small southern red looks ?

Hi George! My Red papaya bought from Bunnings planted around Jan this year now has a few white flowers with many more buds. The bottom is about 8 centimetres in diameter, a bit woody and height is about 70 centimetres. WA metro, warm temperate. Yesterday I saw someone’s backyard a lot of green fruits hanging. I guess in this area it’s not so hard to grow papayas. Just FYI.😊

That's wonderful! Perth's climate is like a dry version of Brisbane, which is so much warmer than Victoria and NSW. My garden recorded 2C yesterday morning, with five months of cold left!

Up near Newcastle in New South Wales it's supposed to be in zone 10b which durian is meant to grow in but they just seem to die during winter because it gets too cold,my cousin reckons that they're growing durian at Mullumbimby in New South Wales in the same zone as ours so I need to find out more about that & if it's true because they're a more equatorial ( ultra tropical) plant. I haven't been able to grow papaya in the ground at my location but I raised some seedling plants until they got to 1 metre tall in my greenhouse last winter & I potted them in 500 millimetre or 52 litre plant pots instead of trying to grow them in pots that are half that size,I really need my own property to grow them in the ground. I started getting fruit off the plants that grew in a 28 litre plant pot but they were small so the pots weren't big enough,, someone in town is growing papaya fruit on a bisexual papaya plant which is a few years old & it's growing in a sheltered position, it's 2 years old now & last winter they threw a bed sheet over the plant to protect it from frost damage. It shot up to 2 metres tall last summer so it loves growing here. I let mine Brave the elements therefore they survive frost then grow back during winter time, it's the rain which kills them rather than the cold weather because they hate having wet feet. The plant that's surviving near the brick wall is because it's radiating the heat from the sun back onto the plant therefore you have created a microclimate for the plant. We've been starting to get 4°C overnight minimums near Newcastle & I prefer growing the red Papaya because it's sweeter,I might get some papaya fruit this summer !

Good luck growing durian in NSW! Papaya should be a lot easier.

I don’t know about Mullumbimby, but I know they are trying to grow durian at tropical fruit world near kingscliff, northern NSW and not far from Mullum.

@@sydneyfruitgardening Having been to Malaysia many times, I find it crazy that someone can even think about growing anywhere South of Mackay let alone NSW. Now, given the unpredictable weather, I won't be surprised if someone manages to grow and get the fruit in a few years.

They seem to prefer a balance of dry and mild conditions in winter, which don't exist in Melbourne.
