Plant a jackfruit in the ground in the middle of the greenhouse, let it grow sheltered for a few years until it gets too big, then you can remove the greenhouse and have a big established in-ground jackfruit that will survive the winter. Also, while the tree is small, you can utilise the space by growing some temporary crops like cassava and papaya.

The word is squatter & I had a tomato 🍅 plant growing in my greenhouse which was squatting as well,it was also pinching nutrients out of one of my potted jackfruit pots which is why I was wondering why it was always wilting & looking sick in the middle of summer time. Somehow the roots had anchored themselves in through the bottom of the plant pot, maybe I dropped it in the pot as I was planting it, the solution was to rip the tomato 🍅 plant up because it was growing like a weed, that fixed my jackfruit plants health issues. I have a few King Thai mango 🥭 seedlings which I germinated from seed growing in my greenhouse because they're my prized mango 🥭 plants,I need to protect them from the frost which will likely start in July. I actually have a cheaper greenhouse than you have because space is at a premium at the moment. Papaya will grow if you provide it with a microclimate like I have some 1.5-2 metre tall papaya plants growing outside this winter,I will stick my Cassava plants underneath the house if they die back because I want to keep the rain off them to prevent root rot then drag them out in September so that they can sprout again. Young Cassava needs a greenhouse to protect them from frost & they're more drought tolerant than rain tolerant except for when you're starting them out as cuttings. The more mature mango 🥭 plants seem to be a bit tougher so they survive winter here in the Newcastle area. I know what you're talking about when you came back from Thailand & you wanted a piece of tropical paradise in Melbourne,I get bored with a Bourne who just wants to grow oranges & even just grass in my area, even my father would bring a whole lot of ferns such as the Crows nest ferns, staghorns, Elkhorns as well as plants such as cycads & my late uncle who was a national parks and wildlife services ranger near Kyogle bought some Bangalow Palm seedlings home with him which he scooped out of his backyard at Mullumbimby in early 2002. Those Bangalow Palms are about 20 metres tall now,I also bought some Macadamia nut seeds home with me from my grandfathers old tree & now my dad has One of them growing in his backyard. I do take it a step further & start growing banana 🍌 plants, pineapple 🍍 plants, Papaya plants, mango 🥭 plants, Jackfruit, Cempedak & my next goal is Marang plants & Papayuelo plants. A durian plant will grow indoors or in a heated greenhouse at the moment. The reason I say that they're that Bourne is because they disapprove of me having one of my former self who was a different Bourne & used to grow papaya to eat for breakfast until he got an allergic to the latex within the papaya fruit. It's also the reason why I drive 20 kilometres per fortnight to buy a couple of Red Papaya fruit to eat because my local Woolworths has stopped selling it,I will do that until my papaya plants produce fruit !

Where are you guys from? How do you rate the durian here? My wife and I have only just started liking durian very recently. My wife was utterly repulsed by it a couple years ago when we first tried it. Then last year she still didn’t like it. But this year, she slowly started changing her mind after two weeks. Then about the 3rd week I bought them, she totally changed. ‘Holy shit’ she said, ‘this is f*ckiing incredible’ 😂 I said yep. I knew you’d come round!

I've been doing some experimenting with frost cloth and I've found that it only gives about 1-2c of protection on 0c nights. However, when I added a buckets of water next to the trees as thermal mass, the trees got 4-6c of protection on 0c nights. So I think it is a good idea to put buckets or barrels of water next to the trees you are most worried about. More water (thermal mass) equals more protection. Also, it might help to put clear polythene around the sides of the tree, with frost cloth over the top.

Fabulous looking persimmons, I'm finding it borderline here for growing them. The trees do fine of course but our summers are generally a bit too cool and short to get the size and sugars into the fruit that I'd like to see. Of course I'm probably stunting the trees and fruits a bit by growing them in containers 🤪

Good job, George! I have to do something similar every late fall in Bay Area, USA (Zone 9B). I am worried about that big jackfruit's trunk. Here are a few suggestions: If you have metal tomato cages, then use them instead of those poles -- they will provide cross-structural rigidity. Or you can drive round stakes in the ground and use PVC pipes around them. Then use 3-way/4-way connectors to connect these pipes at top to provide rigidity. In USA, we get Agribon brand frost cloth and it has various levels of thickness - more thickness, more protection. So maybe those two clothes have different levels of thickness (and hence quality)? If you can get Agribon cloth there (AG-30, AG-50, AG-70) in big roll, you can reuse it year after year -- I have some that I have been using for 10+ years. Maybe u can dig up that rollinia and move it to greenhouse? Finally, I hope u will mound up dirt/leaves, etc. at the base of all those wrappings so that cold wind does not enter from the bottom.
@RealLifeFruitopia
@RealLifeFruitopia 8 күн бұрын
I'm confident the jackfruit will be Ok, as last winter I didn't cover it from the top, only the sides. All the trees have mulch around them and up against the lower part of the cloth. I'm using AG-60 cloth, it's the best I found in Australia. Thanks for sharing your tips!

Well Done 👍. I have used green tree guards that act like a greenhouse for each plant from Bunnings for a lot of smaller trees when young. That’s hard to do when taller. I make a number of them joint to fit larger trees but there’s a limit to what you can do with that. I think the good frost cloth should pay off for you. It’s a lot of work for looking after Tropicals but if you get them to the stage of not needing protection like the Glen Mango it’s worth all the work put into it . All the best with theses trees 🌴

We don't get the temperatures that you're having until July in the Newcastle area in New South Wales, yesterday it got up to 18°C so the days have been pleasant when it's at least partially overcast. The coldest night we've had so far has been 6°C & we don't get the 2°C nights until next month if we do get them, it might sit around 4-5°C at dawn for a couple of hours. I know that my papaya plants haven't been affected by the cold but next month that will change, they will grow back but & my smaller plants are protected inside of my greenhouse for frost protection. The mango 🥭 seedlings tend to hold up to the cold better !
