Coming in late, but in case anyone else watching this in the future is curious (since I don't think he ever explicitly stated how he eventually did it), it is an alloy available in the furnace (no synergies required). It requires coal, glass, iron, and gold- hence why it becomes available on the 3rd island with gold ore.
