Very true! I have an '81 Hamer Special that I picked up in a pawn shop many years ago. I had been eyeing it for a couple of weeks. I walked into the shop on Christmas Eve and saw a sign that said "25% off everything-Merry Christmas". I asked if that included that guitar? He said yes and I immediately bought it. I can play things on that guitar that I NEVER thought of playing before and can't play on others. I think it was there for me to have.

Long ago, I bought a '57 Stratocaster and a Standel tube amp in a pawn shop for $150. This was back when it was just "an old guitar". I sold it about 3 years later because I didn't really like the buzzing. THEN, Eric Clapton started talking about old strats and they became "vintage" and "collectable". The older Les Pauls followed suit. More of a status symbol and antique than wonderful guitars.
@TommyZampАй бұрын
Not all of it is a status symbol. I will agree that is the case sometimes but there are some real magical guitars. Depends on how it makes you feel when you play it

Wow, that 58 sounded so amazing!!! These guitars really are special. I played a 56 Custom with P90's once, and it played and sounded so good I was blown away by it. I went and got a bank loan for $24,000.00 to buy it (late 90's...) and when I went back, they guy who had it sold it on ebay. I was so depressed. Now they are approaching aronomical figures, so my dreams are dashed. Oh well, I have a couple of really nice re-issues I am happy with, but they aren't the same.

Cool video. Funny how some of these guitars have soared in value. When I was growing up I hung out with some older guys from my neighborhood who were in a band. Somebody think it was the keyboard players dad invested money in the band. Guitarist bought a LesPaul goldtop new was like 500.00 back in late 60s i think. Love the sound of Les Pauls. That being said thing that pisses me off is when I started playing in the late 70s i had a ton of P basses...bought & sold them for 250 a pop mint condition. Never found a p bass that I liked.....now some of them beat to hell are going for 1200 & up...if I only knew lol...same with my old SVT heads.....

Id be fine with the gold top. You're getting the pafs and the old wood so if you play good, thats the sound the burst sound. Just a different color and the gold top is slightly older even. The gold top would have a good neck profile too. I dig gold tops. And it's probably cheaper.
@TommyZampАй бұрын
I agree the PAF's and the old wood make it. The neck on the '58 was perfect and played swimmingly.

When you've got one of Joe Bonamassa's guitars, you know you have gold. It's been played and loved. Then you ask yourself, "Where has this thing been, what's it seen?" Too bad guitars can't talk - imagine the stories they could tell.
@TommyZampАй бұрын
Just to be clear these are not Joe's guitars. Mike has worked with Joe for many years and when Paul bought the '59 Burst in this video, there was a 2nd one that was also for sale that Joe bought. But yes I can only imagine some of the stories that these guitars would have!

Refin just means refinished as in sanded down and repainted. Theres many reasons why guitars get refins but as for this particular '59 I'm not entirely sure. Maybe because it had a bigsby? I don't know.

I have a bunch of Gibson Pauls and SG’s. Not as old as these ‘bursts, but 30-40 year old axes, well matured. However, for a laugh, I took delivery of a Harley Benton SC 550 Deluxe for 200 dollars. To be honest, this is a guitar I cannot put down! Lightweight and plays like butter. With a maple cap to die for! I just do not see the point in buying these overpriced overhyped 1950’s instruments. UNLESS they are totally 100 percent original, which I doubt any of them are. They are not ALL good either. There were dogs around in those days as well. Probably more than now. By the way, Les recorded a whole album on an SG. It is on the cover. Just saying.

@ I played a real Gibson in 1960. A 1958 model Les Paul burst. It was in a music shop hanging up in the window, along with a Gretsch Country Gentleman. It was 250 dollars. I tried it. A heavy beast! I was visiting the US ( Philly) with the Royal Navy at the time. My pay was 7 English pounds per week. I was gutted that I could not afford it, even way back then. If I only knew, I would have robbed a bank! Ha ha!

I think some ppl just think theyre special cuz theyve been told they are. When ppl olayed these guitars, nobody gave a flyin fuhk, no different than if i handed you a 1993 whatever, strat les Paul etc. Youd be like 'ok yea cool. Decent guitar, but nothing special'. The tricks of the market and marketing and power and influence of the internet has us all fukt up. Just buy a 15 year old Les Paul and treat it like its the only guitar youll ever have. Itll be no different than when ur s broke teenager and you just have what you have
@TommyZampАй бұрын
People are influenced by many different things that I agree with. However not every vintage guitar is amazing just like not every new guitar is amazing. What makes the guitar special is how the person playing it feels. Its a full sensory overload when its something special.

Not worth the money, buy Heritage Guitars, THEY ARE MUCH BETTER GIBSONS THAN GIBSONS EVER WERE! Now that the u.s. is collapsing, many will be using guitars for firewood and people with money are NOT the smartest Humans, at all!!! Picaso use to laugh at the elites who thought his paintings were worth the crazy amount spent, he purposely painted crap that they considered great bc he knew they were idiots and would spend tons of money for his painting! Same with guitars, this is the golden age of guitars and many if not most today are better than the OVERPRICED antiques fools are spending money on! The Chicago Exchange has a 59 Les Paul in a glass case selling for $295.000., my 1993 Heritage Les Paul was made by the old Gibson luthiers and will DESTROY any Les Paul from any year and musicians that play Heritages know they have a MUCH better guitar than Gibson EVER PUT OUT!!! Antique guitars are not where it's at, you can definitely get better guitars for much less although most guitar companies are overcharging but you can definitely get better instruments today than I did in the 60's, FACT!!
