Nostalgaia's dev here. Awesome Review! super stoked you found time time to give it a shot, thanks for the attention sir. Very thoughtful and level headed review. Mad respect for that. A few thoughts: It's funny, I think we're suffering from pretty bad brand positioning in this case. Most people hear "satirical soulslike" and think we're satirizing soulslikes, which couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, the project is a love letter to Dark Souls and an attempt to take the narrative systems of that game and more deeply integrate them into gameplay, explicit plot, etc. The "satire" element refers to the project's narrative goals of exploring our cultures obsession with nostalgia. If you go into the project expecting us to go "hahaha dark souls lol ppffftttt" yer gunna have a bad time. Don't get me wrong of course. ultimately that's our bad if it's not clear.

@@aryantzh2028 I mean he literally said the combat is pretty barebones, which yeah it looked like it, and he also implied he was disappointed there were no stealth mechanics when the enemy didn't react to the bottle he threw. Otherwise, if he liked it then he liked it. Can't expect him to make stuff about the game that's bad if he didn't think anything in it was bad. Also it's supposedly an Alpha or Pre-alpha version of the game, so his opinion on it would naturally be less harsh than if it was a completed product. Since I'm guessing you have a negative opinion of the game, could you name something in the game you didn't like? Everything else we saw from the video is stuff that many could figure out on their own, highly doubt that he "knows everything about it because the devs paid him". I'd put your torch and pitchfork away unless you got proof that this is both something the Monomyth devs do and something that Pine would agree to, such as him accepting a similar deal in the past. In addition, as Ellie said above, it is illegal on KZbin to not disclose a sponsorship deal, and has been for years. Google "KZbin disclosure of sponsorships" and look for the FTC guidelines if you're interested. I'm sure that some people do it of course, but I don't see why Pine would play with fire like that when he could just acknowledge a sponsorship as he has done many times in the past.

These little Pruld-esque intros you're making are just adorable and I love them. Thank you for this wonderful series you've made. I really wish we could've got a full version of Monomyth. Honestly, it didn't remind as much of Dark Souls as it did of Morrowind and Oblivion, but with checkpoints instead of saving. And even though they seem unrelated, the Elder Scrolls dungeons, even and especially some of Skyrim's, really have that "interconnected area that you can explore a little deeper for more details" feel that a lot of the most developed "level" areas in the Souls series have.

Monomyty has me really impressed and interested in the game. The attention to detail and little "this actually works" moments are magical.

New Eden, the MMO from the last video, has seen a massive surge of new players in the last week or so. They even added a vanity item in honor of Iron Pineapple. It's a cloak with a little Iron Pineapple with sunglasses on it 😂. There's a holiday event going on right now, and a new update coming in a few days. IP, you should definitely do more videos on it, it's insanely fun and they've got some awesome things planned 😁. Not on the team or anything, just someone who really likes the game.
@coolblast32 жыл бұрын
Will just say it's a TERRIBLE time to join in as a new player. The holiday event added christmas elf enemies to the entire zone, which are meant to be grinded for holiday items. Which is neat, gives existing players something to do. But...they're 100x stronger than any other enemy in the zone and will just fucking destroy a newbie. They slow down your movement and do like half of your HP in a single hit. Completely ruins progression and development for a new player Dumb game design, almost as if they didn't expect new people to join.
@Comrade_Alpaca2 жыл бұрын
@@coolblast3 bruh, you're playing a souls like. If you think it's gonna be a breeze, you've got another thing coming. Yeah, the elves are annoying, but they're easily avoidable, and you learn that very quickly. They kick my ass and I'm max level and have some of the best weapons in the game. I learned to avoid them unless I really want to grind for ornaments. If anything, this is the best time to play because it's gonna teach you that it's not gonna be an easy game and you're gonna have to learn to avoid certain things until you're better prepared. They're only gonna be present for another week or so anyway, nowhere near an issue that should keep you from playing
@Comrade_Alpaca2 жыл бұрын
Just to expand on this, the newest patch that just released have made the elves much more balanced. Making it an even better time to join

I'm always happy to see videos of this series. I'm sure I'm not the only one glad to see games I may not have even heard about until now. Monomyth looks so good. And, I may have to try Hammerfight. Also, I love listening to you share the little details of the metal poster. I can see you two put a lot of work on the design.
@kiptheott2 жыл бұрын
Also it's worth noting that the Monomyth demo in the video is a pre-alpha, the dev's been adding a lot of stuff since then like armor, better UI, better enemy AI, a weapon durability/repair system, friendly NPCs, fire propagation, and so on. You can see some of these in videos on his KZbin channel: www.youtube.com/@rattowergames/videos

I love that you were not nearly as harsh as you could have been when a game was janky but you could tell the developer was making it from a place of passion, as not to discourage them from potentially making really cool things in the future as they continue and improve/grow. So I'd like to say that Enter the Gungeon definitely has a mechanic similar to that one in Fabular but it's mostly hidden. The more stuff you unlock and the more runs you do in EtG, the more difficult earlier levels will become. New rooms start generating and enemies that previously showed up later start showing up in earlier chambers. It's so subtle though. You'd never know it without restarting your save file. And while it makes the first few levels that much more difficult, your skill will generally increase a lot faster than the difficulty does. so, I think that "punishment" mechanic can work if done correctly enough. And the fact that EtG doesn't out right tell you it's happening also helps.
@Kakodoyo1112 жыл бұрын
Another mildly popular roguelite that does this is a little indie game called The Binding of Isaac (lmao). But in that game it happens very very early on, and it also doesn't control like soap, so that's probably where Iron has a problem with it.
@chastermief8392 жыл бұрын
@@Kakodoyo111 the Everything Is Terrible achievement also only unlocks once you beaten Mom's Heart 5 times. A mechanic like this where the game "grows with you" can be good if it's well implemented. It keeps the game at a comfy level of challenge and adds variety to the game for subsequent runs. Basically, before Everything Is Terrible unlocks, the game is holding back most of the tricks it has available to add challenge and variety to a run. You're getting a fraction of the room, boss, and enemy pool to ease you into the game until you've proved you can handle it by finishing a run 5 times. In the case of Fabular, it sounds like the game is a little too eager to flip this switch and say "you're ready for the REAL game now!"
@HailKosm2 жыл бұрын
Slay the Spire, has a similar mechanic based upon how many times you beat a boss on a character. You get like a new ascension level for that character which makes the game progressively harder. Enemies get stronger, encounters are less favorable and map layouts are more punishing. I feel like the game getting harder works best when you have reached milestones in the game. Right now, Fabular increases difficulty based upon how quickly you can clear an area. Which on paper sounds like a great way of doing it, but in execution is very frustrating. They should change it to be either more like Isaac and have it be based on how often the player beats a "wall" type boss. or be like slay the spire and make difficulty increases upon beating the game.

I always wished they'd make an Arx Fatalis remake. The bread making thing and other interactions blew my young mind to pieces back in the day. Not to mention the spellcasting by drawing glyphs with the mouse. That game is one of a kind, only marred by confusing and labyrinthine level design and clunky combat (though that was part of its charm).

yeah I got ANNO a while back. It's really interesting and has a lot of good things going for it. It's really nice visually, the story starts off pretty strong, and the gameplay is a really interesting blend of 2D platforming and a 3D rpg. That said, it's pretty rough around the edges in most places. The combat is fun but feels clunky, and it's pretty basic once you get the hang of it. Also, the story becomes pretty bad later on (in my opinion of course). I liked it enough to 100% it and eventually do a NG+, but it's definitely not for everyone, and I can't really recommend it unless it's on sale or something.

I generally avoid Souls-likes, I don't know how or why youtube recommended ANY of your vids to me, but the charming intros and fascination with obscure steam game round ups like this made me watch the entire "Souls-likes you've never heard of" playlist and now I'm subbed. Even more wild is that you're the second steam dumpster dive channel I've been recommended via algorithm in the past two weeks! (The other is Graeldon and his Steam Sequence vids). Leaving my comment of support here though because despite my aversion to the genre, I am now looking into Nostalgaia as sometimes aesthetic and gimmick can keep me playing, and that whole "bring equipment to a place to make it 'remember'" is utterly fascinating to me. As a passive bystander to souls-likes, here's looking forward to the next vid!
