2:13 TES:Arena was the first game to feature environmental lighting from mobile objects (the fireball in this case). All other games prior had lights in static positions. One of the first things everyone who bought Arena did was fire off a projectile spell at night and watch how it lit up the environment as it flew.

I had a lot of fun with TES: Arena. I wandered around for weeks before buying the official guide to know wherebthe staff pieces were. I created a fire spell to insta-kill the final boss, doing 10 damage per level. At level 20+ I had enough mana to cast the spell and kill him in one hit. Kinda anticlimactic, tbh.

Another standout feature for Morrowind compared to the other entries is its creativity. I recently played all the elder scrolls games and morrowind's world building stood out massively in comparison to the others. I'd say the second best world building was in daggerfall but many people would probably say skyrim I'm guessing, especially since the worldbuilding in daggerfall is hidden behind piles of books for the most part. The thing I didn't like about skyrim's worldbuilding is that the style was so heavily inspired by obvious real world counterparts that it takes away from the immersion. It's still fantastic but it is one of the many things I always wasn't a fan of in it.

@@justurboi3806 I played Morrowind back in 2003-2004 and done 20-25 long play throughs over the years, at the time there was nothing that came close to it. When you are done with the grind and get adapted to its mechanics there is no better feeling than exploring it, shame I can't go back to those times I discovered it first. Completely alien land, with humans (imperials) clearly presented as invading foreign-species there. To be honest with all the rpgs and mmos you'd think more games would focus on this spin, but no its medieval era walls and all that comes with that. They even took out Spears/Crossbows which is so dumb as it gave so much more variety to the game.

@@m.m.4609 "Oblivion had some magical vibes that was missing in Skyrim." So, i am not the only one who thinks that. I always thought this came from the fact that in Oblivion the Empire is still in one piece (storywise). It's struggling politically, but still none of the provinces ejected themselves from it. And i think this gave the Empire more stability and less hostility from NPCs ingame. In Skyrim, this feels different. There's a frikkin Bandit cave at every corner, nearly every NPC is either racist, utterly stupid or more or less just looking for his/her own or an outright pompous asshole like Nazeem. Not to mention the Thalmor. And some NPCs are outright bugged beyond anything good like Aerin, that weirdo stalker. And they still haven't patched this guy's daily routine.

You scream at a giant and they drop dead. Morrowind made me feel like filth and I liked it. I died trying to step a worm. Birds constantly pecked on me and everyone hated me. For Oblivion, the somewhat failed NPC life cycle made it even more realistic and fun to play. You felt the passion the devs put in it. A random brawl breaking out in town, townsguard hunting each other, they even topped all this and totally owned this failure by releasing the Shivering Isles DLC.

Good for you and I agree. Honestly I feel it's unforgiveable that Morrowind is 3-D and still relying on a dice roll because the whole point of the dice roll for combat in Arena and Daggerfall is because you can't animate combat properly yet much less flank a sprite really. That and Morrowind is when we went from a very hard R of Arena/Daggerfall to a sappy elf filled G rating. Oblivion at least makes up for that a little with the hellscapes of Oblivion and Skyrim has brought back everything but the nudity.

The reason Morrowind’s combat feels like Flailing is because it is based on Hit Chance. Every time you attack a dice is rolled and that decides wether you hit or miss. The Weapons that your class is skilled in have a very good chance to hit, but weapons you are not skilled in are just gonna do nothing. You can pick up any weapon you want and use it, doesn’t mean you’re gonna be great at it. While I get that maybe you and many other people wouldn’t like that, I personally enjoy it more then any of the other combat systems. It actually feels like I’m getting better at something, slowly building up my way from hitting maybe every nth time to hitting every time and killing the opponents in 2 hits. While I’m Skyrim and Oblivion, I cannot tell the difference between level 10 One handed and Level 100 One handed because it is based off player skill, not character skill. As long as the player is good at ducking out of combat and making the models intersect then they deal damage. In Morrowind I love the fact that it does expect the player to work to get better and makes the skill based progression system make sense, and it is incredibly satisfying to get really good with your preferred weapons and spells. Any thoughts on that?
@Niosai
@Niosai Жыл бұрын
It definitely makes sense to me, especially now that I've gone back and played more. The thing is, at least for me personally, I enjoy the visceral feeling of hitting targets with my chosen weapon without having to worry about proficiencies and such. However, I can totally see why some people would like the D&D-style dice roll, too, since it adds an element of randomness and challenge to an otherwise simple combat system.
@DougWIngate
@DougWIngate Жыл бұрын
It's relatively easy to be effective at combat even from the beginning, if you know what you're doing. Play as a Redguard Knight born under the Warrior sign, with a decent Long Blade, and you will do plenty of damage. The main reasons new players struggle to land that first blow: 1) incorrect character build for the weapon used 2) battling with empty stamina 3) using incorrect attack type - this is often overlooked. For example, making sure you chopp instead of thrust an axe, and thrust instead of swing a spear. many players just spam attacks (which ialso drains your stamina more) without considering which attack type is best. Morrowind's combat is actually a fair bit more complex than Skyrim, but you wouldn't know it because it looks a lot dumber. 4) your character simply ain't experienced enough. In Morrowind, you start as a legit rookie. you barely even know how to use a weapon. Very different in Skyrim, where the tutorial sees you chopping down bad guys like it's nothing. When you do start landing strikes consistently in Morrowind, it feels so satisfying because you made it happen
@aionarkhe5260

I will say that a lot of Morrowind players tend to assert that sticking with the dice rolls is best, but I don't think it should be a hard and fast rule - I think it's fine to mod away. Why? Because once you learn all of the mechanics, it becomes easy enough to stack them in your favor. As one example, a relatively low level character can wreck higher level enemies by having short blade as a primary skill and buying a Demon Tanto from Ra'Virr. The bound dagger will stay charged long enough to get you through most dungeons, adds 10 points to short blade, and has a high enough attack rate to stagger your enemies a lot. Coupled with good in-and-out plus sanctuary boosts, you're good to go. The gripe many new players have about not hitting anything turns around on an experienced player - eventually it gets kind of dumb being surrounded by guards and almost everything is missing you, with many attacks that get through simply being blocked. I find that removing the dice roll and focusing on mods that diversify reach makes for a fun dynamic system where enemies always remain a threat by virtue of being able to stagger you more easily. Although spear gets a little OP in one-on-one, since you're always out of their reach.
@HotNothin
@HotNothin 10 ай бұрын
@@aionarkhe5260 I see your point, but I’ve always seen the action to be secondary in the elder scrolls games, so I’ve never really liked how combat changed so much to make it feel like that. It certainly can be fun, It’s just not Elder Scrolls to me personally. I’m sure it will stay being mods moving forward. I highly doubt they’re gonna bring back hitchance by anymeans, and I’m not gonna argue that it should be when I have the older games for that, but I do hope someone else tries to do something with hitchance so we can have a more modern take on it.

In Óblivion and Skyrim your character is still getting better by leveling up by doing way more damage and unlocking perks giving you new abilities in combat, it just always lets you hit when you .... hit. I dont think it makes sense to do a 3d rendered real time game where you control your weapon and then have it miss by dice rolls, it feels so off and it only makes sense in a turn based more abstracted game like actuall dnd.

Word of advice to everyone, DO NOT DO WHAT IS DEPICTED AT 10:03 Because 1. Power attacks are significantly more stamina efficient in morrowind, so you should not be "spamming" attacks. And 2. NEVER USE THE IRON DAGGER! Just ignore it, it's a trap. You in all likelihood did not make a character with short blades in mind so you WILL miss. And if you did, USE ANY OTHER DAGGER! HECK, YOU PROBOBLY HAVE SOME OTHER WEAPON CHOSSEN LIKE LONG SWORD, JUST USE ONE OF THE ENCHANTED WEAPONS THAT ARE JUST LYING AROUND NEAR THE STARTING AREA. @@appleseed8282 "playing a game wrong" You shouldn't be able to accidentally play a game wrong. It makes zero sense that strong, heavy attacks drain less stamina than fast ones. Plus, the Iron Dagger makes the most sense to use on a rogue in the early game. Both of those actions are logical conclusions that anyone could make, and the fact that it directly leads to playing the game "wrong" is absolutely a fault on Morrowind.

@@DDCDV010 1. it's not that they drain less stamina, its that its more efficient. They use pretty similar stamina amounts, but power attacks just output a lot better damage. 2. I agree that its not nice to show you a weapon that bunch of people probably can't use and is trash for those who can, but when you make a character that never touched a short sword in their life you shouldn't be surprised they suck at using one. 3. This "accidentally" playing is an issue that both can and can't be laid on the game. Can because there's no in-game tutorial specifically explaining how all the stats work, and can't because the manual that came with the game did explain this along with the fact that all of this information is easily findable in the internet. And 4. I may have messed up got a little bit confrontational with my reply, as said in the beginning this was word of advice. This is a common complaint that is solved by doing the same amount of research if not less then the people had to do on release. Just wonder why your character can't hit anything, try to research it, and realize it's because they're trying to hit something with a weapon they never used while completely out of breath. Some of these issues seem to come from people being used to much more streamlined games and just assuming they can do anything.

While the elder scrolls games are great in their own right, it's the unparalleled mod support that really sets them apart in the industry. 10 years later Skyrim is still thriving like it was released just a few months ago, and a big part of that is due to the ridiculously active modding community. Some of the ongoing modding projects are absolutely huge, involving hundreds of developers. Many of these teams could probably just make a game of their own (and some of them did).

SPOILERS FOR MORROWIND What I love about Morrowind is that its so... unique. The story is amazing and looking at the lore behind the game is just... WOW. It makes me want to look more into what exactly happened to get us to where we were then. What did happen that fateful day on Red Mountain when the First Council confronted Dumac? I love how a lot of stuff is up to interpretation. Did Voryn actually kill Nerevar? Or was it the Tribunal? (yes.) What did the Dwemer do that made them disappear? Was it using the tools on the Heart or separating the tools FROM the Heart? There's so many questions we just don't have the answers to, so much so if they wanted they could create a new game based around the First Council and the Battle of Red Mountain. Morrowind's lore is so deep and rich and I feel many people overlook it.

Which is what makes me sad with Skyrim. From Arena to Oblivion, you stay more or less in the same era, and you hear updates about characters you previously met. In Skyrim you're so far away that there is little chances to meet characters you saw previously or to get updates on them, or to get answers of questions you wondered about. Where did the Nerevarine go, ect. The fact that we're so far away from that time means we'll never get the answer, very probably.

I think he meant that Morrowind's music is not very atmospheric because it almost doesn't have connections to gameplay and scenery. Oblivion as far as I remember executed it a little better. For example there were tracks for dungeons or maybe even for different areas or weather. As for Skyrim, this game does this best, even beyond Elder Scrolls series. IMO it's still unmatched for soundtrack end especially sound design. Looking really quickly at your Morrowind character screen, I noticed that Short Blade is not one of your Major or Minor skills (skills that start with a higher number and contribute to level gain when they increase). This is why you had the flailing feeling when using the dagger as in the gameplay footage. Your character is not skilled enough with short blades to be able to hit your enemies with them reliably, and so you don't. Also, hit chance scales with the amount of fatigue (stamina) you have, so starting a fight with low fatigue or running out of fatigue will end in a lot of missed attacks.

You also need to make sure you're using the right attacks, if you have a spear and sidestep it does a slashing attack which does about 2 points of damage at most, but if you move forward you do a thrust attack which does deal damage and will hit more often if you're proficient with thrusting attacks. Most people never learn that though.

Hey, just wanted to say that you made a teensy mistake. Even though Oblivion's persuasion system has more depth, in Morrowind you actually can persuade NPCs all over the game to like you or not. Unlike Oblivion's dynamic system with different NPCs liking different ways to persuade them, Morrowind had three options: persuade, taunt, and bribe. Persuade usually ups the disposition of an NPC but it can fail based on your speech skill. Taunt is the same except it lowers disposition and you can also lure NPCs to attack you. Finally, there's Bribe which is a guaranteed raising of disposition at the cost of 10, 100, or 1000 gold, which match with how high the increase is.

A couple small corrections: At 7:19 you say "something new in morrowind is the ability to create a class from scratch". You could create a fully custom class in Daggerfall, you even showed this option at 3:49. At 12:15 you say that Morrowind and earlier games didn't allow you to wear armor types unless they were part of your class skills. That's untrue for both Morrowind and Daggerfall. All classes can wear all armor types in Morrowind, and in Daggerfall you could wear all armor types unless you specifically took a disadvantage "Forbidden Armor Type" at character creation. Custom classes never had to take that disadvantage, though some premade classes came with it. Haggling with merchants, having it be affected by how much they like/dislike you, and being able to talk with them in different ways to make them like/dislike you aren't new in Oblivion. They were all present in Morrowind, and some were present in Daggerfall. The only new part for Oblivion was the "wheel" minigame. Which, I agree with you, was cool but too easy. Definitely gotta disagree with your comment on Skyrim taking class customization to the next level. It's objectively less customizable than Morrowind or Oblivion. It has perks, but you don't get to choose primary/major/minor skills that define your class, and attributes were removed entirely and replaced with the simple Health/Stamina/Mana. Races also have almost 0 impact on your character build, which is both good and bad. There's also less skills and *way* fewer spells than in previous games. Spells also get outclassed fast by combat, as nothing can improve the power of spells in the game. Once you have the most powerful spell, that's it. You aren't getting stronger as a wizard except by having more mana. Same thing with shouts; they have a total of 3 upgrades (2 extra words, and then the black books) and that's it. Weapons keep scaling far, far beyond that. Any damage shout becomes useless quickly, only the utility ones stay useful. In the end, Skyrim and Morrowind are definitely tied as my favorite Elder Scrolls games, for totally different reasons. Oblivion was my first ES game, and its my 2nd favorite. Daggerfall was too boring, but I appreciate what it did for the time.

In Skyrim, you can use alchemy to brew potions that significantly increase the damage of your destruction spells. Iirc, up to 3-400% without exploits. They last for a minute, but it's something. Being skilled in destruction will also boost the enchantments on your weapons, both damage (with perks) and charge cost. At 100% destruction discount, your weapons will use 0 charge. Nifty.

The one thing about Morrowind in this video (apart from the armor types in Morrowind) that's wrong is the combat situation. The combat in Morrowind is stat based. That means that if your statistics for combat are high you're most likely to hit the enemy every time, so yeah in the start it's kinda like he says but as you progress it's no different than the sequels. And the stats apply to different types of weapons, in general some mechanics of Morrowind are way more complex than the sequels like the combat. For example in Skyrim there's a skill tree for two handed and perks that gives you effects on two handed weapons, in Morrowind if you use a dagger your expertise in short weaponry is increasing to the point of you hitting your target every time, that means that if you pick another type of weapon like a two handed longsword it's not going to be hitting quite as often. So you not hitting the worm on your way to balmora it's not because the game is old and janky, it's by design. Lovely video tho I really enjoy this type of content, especially when it has to do with the es series.
@GuraiMockery

Old & Janky Design that is. Morrowind is a good game on its own and definitely a must-play, but if not for the terrible combat design, it would be far more played by newer players who started with Oblivion, Skyrim or even ESO for example. Edit : This is also why Skywind is so anticipated by a lot of players. Sadly, I am kinda skeptical about if it ever will be released, so we can only hope.
@nate235gaming
@nate235gaming 2 жыл бұрын
@@GuraiMockery I disagree with it being bad design, chance based combat is what makes up a lot of rpg games and can be very fun to play with. The main issue is that the game is unclear on how some weapons work, for example axes have a very low min hit and you really need to use power attacks with them to do damage were as with a sword you can spam. Overall it allows for more in depth class building and if updated properly it could be very fun. I do think morrowind didn't do it great however. also personal opinion but I think that skywind is a butcher job on a great game and that the devs and fans can't handle criticism.

The first game is inspired more by Ultima Underworld than Doom. When they were making it. They were just making a generic fantasy arena fighting game. Idk about Arena, but Daggerfall has it and it is way better than chosing a premade one, because you can customize your advantages and weaknesses. So many skills to pick from, the ability to set up attribute offsets for when you roll your stats, and the ability to custom design your character’s strengths and weaknesses! You even get to pick how well you are liked by people in the world from the different castes the world has, so you can fully invest yourself in your RP. Daggerfall is old, which makes it difficult to really get into… but after I spent the time, it quickly became my favourite! The ability to create your own class is not something new to Morrowind. That's been a feature since Daggerfal and is almost required to get through the game with any level of ease. For Daggerfall, I recommend a spellsword of some description specializing in Longblade or shortblade (the latter is for your ebony dagger if you get the option for it and you will want to grab either it or the daikatana, it's the only way to kill the imps in the starting dungeon, you other option is to sneak past them) and putting both mysticism and thaumaturgy somewhere on tour major skills. Restoration wouldn't be a bad idea either. Other than that, take some critical weaknesses (preferably ones you can offset with racial traits, example: Breton takes -50% magic damage, take a critical weakness to magic) and some forbidden materials or weapon types (whatever you don't want to use, Orcish or leather is alright to give up as one is high tier but not supreme and the other is essentially worthless if you have access to anything better, which you will, weapon types are self explanatory) to lower the difficulty dagger and you're set. For Morrowind it's similar (magic is king), but there's less complexity to it and it's less punishing. Also, you don't need to go into short blade this time as you won't be coming across impervious enemies until you have a chance to get weapons capable of killing them. I'd recommend taking spear or longblade for your primary skills with the rest devoted to your armor type and preferred school of magic (can never go wrong with restoration) and then a bow or a different school of magic/mercantile as a minor trait in place of the dagger. Basically whatever you think is useful. One thing i like to do it take the sign of the Lover and make Agility a preferred attribute. Thus starting you off with 65 agility base. Which is handy as agility governs whether or not you can hit stuff with your weapons. Yes, this still applies to archery, no the arrows do not survive being shot if you flunk a roll on the target. It's annoying. These are recommendations, however. You can honestly do what you want. It's an RPG. I've seen someone play a bow wielding linguist in Daggerfall and one shot orcs consistently, and I have personally played through some of the starting areas in Morrowind using nothing but my fists and ingenuity. Yeah, it'll be harder early on and it'll take you a while to get to that point, but if you can make it work, by all means, play the game how you want and make your character to suit your play style. Out of all the Elder Scrolls Games, ESO has my favorite combat system (purely because it has you do more than just mash the attack button rhythmically, hotbars with abilities and the more complex rock paper scissors of blocking bashing and dodging breaks up the monotony of previous games bare bones combat loops, it can be a bit floaty though), but as far as the mainline titles (the ones covered here) Morrowind has the best character creation and Daggerfall has the best mechanics in my opinion. They add a level of randomness to combat that can make things more interesting and makes you think about encounters more. And while yes, it's the same loop of button mashing is present and can get monotonous after a while, the sheer depth of the internal mechanics makes it really rewarding to properly make a combat build. Not to mention the magic system in morrowind is by far the most advanced and interesting in the series even including ESO. In Morrowind and Daggerfall I'm stopping before combat starts and thinking about the spells I have on hand, my escape routes, my stamina, and what kinds of ways I can stack my advantages. In ESO I'm crafting my build extensively before hand and applying buffs and debuffs, dodging and weaving, and trying to get the upper hand over my opponent by stunning and interrupting him. In games like Skyrim and to a lesser extent Oblivion, I'm entering a fight where the only considerations that actually matter are how high my level is and how many wheels of cheese I have on hand. After a while I find that gets rather boring. Though it does leave room for quite the power fantasy as the game is by necessity much easier than either Daggerfall or Morrowind. Separately, Morrowind also has a limited schedule for the NPCs, and there's even some sidequests that revolve around it.

I didn't like morrowind at first, gone back to it recently and I love the immersion, no map markers you have to ask around and refer to your journal to find out where to go, its refreshing these days as every game nowadays holds your hand
