Is there a wrong way to play a video game? This is a question I asked myself when playing the Greek God of War games about a year ago. In this video, I'll go over everything I learned from asking such a simple question

Spread word of 'em where you can, especially with new ones. Stuff like Soulstice, Genokids, Yasuke: A Lost Descendant, Gori: Cuddly Carnage, and I think that Cookie Cutter and Immortal: And the Death that Follows can be added to this kind of gameplay style too.

There is no "right" or "wrong" way to play it. Clearly, SMS put immense effort into this world to create an experience for someone who's never played a video game before. You can play on Easy and have an awesome time because you're living the fantasy of an unstoppable Spartan warrior going on an epic adventure. But the awesome thing is, when you've played the game 100+ times, when none of the story or environments really engross you anymore, you can turn up the difficulty and find a new joy in a deep complex enjoyable combat system. SMS really thought of everyone here. These games are extremely accessible and vibes-heavy (which contributed to its popularity), but at the same time has a very deep thought out gameplay loop for the hardcore EPIC GAMERS out there. There's no "right" or "wrong" way. Anyone can enjoy them for one reason or another. You just shifted from one category to another is all. Both are perfectly valid.

I'd encourage everyone to play Dante's Inferno if you can find it. Incredible game, worthy of an update and series. As far as the old God of War games, let me suggest the hardest mode with no upgrades (no upgrade run), and I'd also suggest doing the challenges. Each game has them. There is one challenge where you can't get hit at all or you fail (I'm not sure which game this challenge was on). I still go back through and play the old games, and try to find hidden chests. About 2 years ago, I found four chests in God of War 3 I had never found before. In about 18 months it will be the 20th anniversary for God of War. I'm not sure if they have anything planned, but it wouldn't surprise me to see a complete remaster, possibly even a remaster bundle to go with the PS5 Pro. We'll see what's in store because I can't imagine a 20 year anniversary to go by without any type of update.

Mostly agree, the only thing I dislike about the game is that part close to the end that pretty much feels like the challenge mode of god of war. As an optional thing it's okay, but in dantes inferno it's part of the main game and that shit is often just way too hard, even on normal. ^^;

I don't want to brag about it but I've beaten the older god of war games on the hardest difficulty a lot of times. What you said on the video is true. The game becomes more fun when you play it trying to never lose your hits. Every time I play god of war, I kill the enemies as more creatively as a I can. I try to use all the attacks and I want keep increasing the hits.

I don't agree there's a wrong way to play the game, as long as you're enjoying it. Hack'n'slash games usually have a lot of in-depth and hard to master mechanics, so if a person doesn't want to dive deep into all of this and just want to chill, i can totally understand it. Difficulty options are there for a reason. And i'm telling that as a combo enjoyer. But like, if you're not experiencing the whole thing with all the details and choosing only to play the story, for example, your opinion about the game will be missing these details as well. I mean, there's no wrong way to play a game, but there's a wrong way of judging it. If you're skipping some aspects of the game intentionally for your own comfort and enjoyment, you should skip these aspects as well when you're judging it. Of course, it is not how the game journalists work, they need to tell about every aspect for a review, but they don't have time or desire to explore every aspect, and because of that we have "button mashing" reviews. Again, not because they played it wrong, but because they judged it wrong. Sadly, that's how most reviews work.

Great video Kaptain!!! I’m happy for you that you found love again for the God of War franchise, as it is my top favorite as well! I too felt the same way at times with God of War (Greek Series). Once God of War (Norse Series) came out, it added a whole different playstyle like you mentioned in the video, and even had me rethinking & replaying God of War (Greek Series) ever so differently. Playing at higher difficulties FORCES you to learn the mechanics with more depth, and to genuinely use all your tools & resources at your disposal. Now this is a completely different genre, but one game I recently replayed with the genuine intent to learn & improve upon was Doom Eternal. And let me tell you, once you learn the mechanics and understand the game better, it completely changed my experience! I fell in love with it!!! Now that game literally FORCES you to learn about mechanics, weak points, weapon advantages/disadvantages, resource management, and finally, getting into the “flow-state”. And once you’re in that flow-state, it becomes an addiction lol. I highly recommend you give Doom Eternal a chance! It has now become one of my favourite games and franchises along with God of War 🔥🔥🔥

I used to despise the barbarian hammer for it's slowness until i found out ways to use it. For example near the medusa's temple there is a place where enemies spawn infinitly and are so weak i can hold them of with the hammer's souls and because the souls inflict so little damage they can build the combo meter quickly, enabling you to farm red orbs as long you don't destroy the pillars.

Well as i was playing 2005 the orginal, i was nearing the end, i was having fun, but sonethibg told me, start all over again, no cheats. I did so and i started playing legit again. God If War made me come back to being a gamer with integrity. Then i went fron easy, to normal, to hard, to hardest. Since then my gaming attitude has been much better. I get my money's worth now. Becaude i mastered The Greek Sagas six games on all difficulties, got red orb cost conscious, and lost bad habbits, and made better methods of tactics in gameplay. Made me a more mature gamer. This video also demonstrates the interest for this gameplay style one of my oldest videos all of sudden gotten traction in the last few years and has gotten to over almost 200k views. This is one of reasons why I played god of war Ascension multiplayer, regardless of the balancing issues, it was fun fighting other players and trying to outplay your opponents, and I wish that multiplayer was further realized in the future, I wouldn't mind if they remastered the game only for the multiplayer. And further add ascension nailed down the combat, unfortunately while a lot people didn't like the story, I loved the combat. To this day I occasionally do play it once it while since the servers are still up.

To my understanding, two of the biggest actual problems with GOW Ascension's combat were - Finicky Parry move that does not feel good to use - On higher difficulties, enemies gain a lot of strength, defense and stun resistance that make it nigh unfairly difficult to build up the Special meter on the bottom right. Is that a correct assessment?

Same thing can be said about the norse games , mainly ragnarok If you follow the path that developers created for us , the gameplay and rpg mechanics become so more interesting and truly change the gameplay I played ragnarok for almost 1000h now and went into every secret and every corner of it in every difficulty and did all what can be done And i can tell you the rpg mechanics in this game are truly well placed (this is coming from a guy who's favorite genre is rpg games) To explain briefly the correct way to play ragnarok is mainly related to kratos level In the main quests you can never be overpowered or over leveled The game is made in a way that you can never have enough resources to be overleveled When you start the game you will have the option between 2 armors sets , you can level up only one of them as you advance in the game but you can never go beyond the level of enemies you will encounter next Now for exemple when you go to alfheim the first time and finish the main quests , you will be able to go into the desert to do side quests , If you do all the side quests you will have a new full set of equipement (full armor , pomels , shield , artefact) that full set will be the exact level of enemies you gonna encounter next, you will also have enough resources to level up one full set you are already have to put it at same level as alfhein armor (so the game let you choose from here on to either continue with the armor you had already or go with the time stopping armor of alfheim) The set you choose will truly affect your gameplay for exemple if you go with the alfheim set you will be playing a lot more on last second dodges Again when you go to vanaheim after you do side quests , you will have lunda armor and enough resources to level up one set you already had into the level of the next enemies that gonna appear in the main quests (the gane let you choose here again to continue with the set you already had and improve it to the next level or go with lunda set from now on) so either continue with the last second dodge gameplay or go with bare handed combat now with lunda set (which i hate how there is no skill tree for it) For me thats how ragnarok is made to be played since its calculated exactly to always be at exact level of enemies and with only one old set and a new set to change you gameplay

Funny that's one of the things I didn't like about Ragnarok, I couldn't switch sets if I wanted to due to not having upgrade materials since they're limited and I'm of the opposite opinion, I SHOULD be overleveled because I'm taking my time to do sidequest, being Overleveled and having an easier time IS my reward. I eventually just decided to go for cooldowns and spamming abilities as I don't like New GOW combat's all that much, I don't like the Axe or Spear playstyles. Maybe OG GOW is simpler by modern standards but I have more fun getting combos higher, using OP magic (like in the OG, AoH is stupidly broken due to mitigating how many enemies can attack you etc), no filler and more (kinda like DMC, NG and Bayo, prob why I love that genre)

I have to utilized all the moves, abilities and switch throught targets to make every encounter as cinematic as possible. This build gaming habit so good that I never realize until I grow up (20s) and that one time I gaming with my Uni's friends, they comment that whao, you played like those guy on KZbin. I don't think there is a right or wrong way as long as your having fun, but like yourself when you play different styles or hardness levels you open up another way to enjoy the game. I like going from easy to god of war whenever I start a new game. With easy I can enjoy the storyline, then increasing the difficultly levels I enjoy learning to beat enemies in a more efficient manner by learning the best techniques and combos to win a fight.

The last statement is super interesting. It's so sad but actually true how much power these journalists have had on shaping the gaming industry. The gaming industry is in the shape that it is because these people who usually are terrible at games, bullied creative fun games into disappearing and praised cinematic games like there was no tomorrow. Result, every game is now a open world, story driven, souls like. Which I used to love each of these types of games but now that every game is a blend of the 3 it lost all uniqueness.

Almost any game can be called a mindless button masher if you limit your playstyle. Even the newer GOW games with all of their complex button combos and whatever can still be played with L1, R1, and R2. I think the reason why it was especially a huge stereotype for the old GOW games is mainly due to it's story. It had a lot of stuff that people considered and still consider to be a "teenage boy power fantasy" with little to no depth. I'm not going to debate on that, but one thing I definitely can say is that the new GOW games definitely did retcon/add context to the story in ways that made people appreciate the old games (mainly GOW1 and probably 2) a lot more.

As "wrong" as you played the games before, the fact that you were still able to get something out of it just highlights the elegance of God of War's design. It really catered to everybody across the fluffy-aesthetics to crunchy-gameplay spectrum. Personally, I like playing God of War 100% completion style, so I look up where all the secrets are and see if I can remember their locations as I play through the game on the highest difficulty. (This isn't to say that this is easy. I broke two controllers trying to beat the final Zeus fight in GoW3 Chaos difficulty.) But that's just another way to play. So long as you beat the game, you may have played it suboptimally, but you didn't play it _wrong._ Honestly I'm not the biggest fan of Soulslikes. They're on my bucket list, as far as I'm concerned, but I'm in no hurry to try them out. (Especially DS2, which I hear is a right piece of work, even by Soulslike standards.) One of the big things hindering me getting into them is that it's so much slower-paced. Kratos, by contrast, almost had more speed than power at times, buzzing around like a weed whacker on a sugar high. Even the Arkham engine, a close relative of what I call "the Jaffe engine", lets Batman (or sometimes Spider-Man) bounce between all his enemies in a singular fluid combo until everything in the room but you is dea- violently concussed. But soulslike characters just lumber around really slowly, making really tedious boss fights with too much health all the more ponderous. And then you die halfway through and you feel as if that's an hour of your life you're never getting back. It's like the bosses are _literally killing you_ very slowly by wasting your time. Even on the stupidest difficulties, God of War bosses don't feel like they last forever. Before long, they'll all visibly shift their mode of attack to their second or third phases, thus constantly giving you feedback that you're making some kind of progress. Even the time you don't spend attacking goes into dodging around the enemy attack patterns, meaning you're always engaged and doing _something._ Not waiting for a stamina meter to refill or for an attack animation to wind down. With all the fairly recent talk about whether Soulslikes should have easy mode, that's just yet another reason why Soulslikes are a bad replacement for Jaffe Engines. Anybody can beat any God of War eventually. Whether or not you choose to delve into its mechanics at a higher level or not is up to you. It's almost like a rhythm game, only with more beating the crap out of things. Soulslikes, on the other hand, strive to emulate the gameplay experience of a Jaffe Engine in a way that (1) isn't as likely to break your controller and (2) locks the player into the highest-level difficulty by literally not having other difficulty levels, taking away the ability to wuss out that most gamers considered a soft insult anyway. Fair enough to those who are into that sort of thing, but it's not exactly newbie friendly. On the other side of things, you have these toothless collect-a-thon craft-em-ups with combat that's less designed to beat you as to make sure you're still awake and toiling away at the 50-hour game. Yahtzee, with his typical level of vulgar decorum, coined these "Jimminy C%ckthroat" games. For some reason, God of War got turned into one in the Norse reboot. It insisted on "growing" Kratos into a more mature character, which I argue is _completely_ missing the point. Kratos was _supposed_ to be this barely-contained rage ball to facilitate the fast-paced over-the-top gameplay which was actually a lot closer to the spirit of the original myths than a lot of history majors would admit. To try and make Kratos more mature is to admit that you fundamentally didn't understand the previous games and why they were the way they were. Or worse: you feel as if the previous games need to be chastised for being the way they were. It's generally poor form to insult something you clearly don't understand. What I miss most about the Jaffe Engine games, and older God of War in particular, is that it could actually marry these two gameplay styles and have them live together in peace. Brutally difficult twitch gameplay with cathartic violence and the odd boinking minigame could live at peace with exploration, grand spectacle, and obnoxiously saccharine speeches about hope and forgiveness. It was the last time these two different gameplay models could live at peace with one another. Nowadays, you have to _choose_ which team you're on: Team Git Gud or Team Pontificate on the Human Condition, and never again the two shall meet. You never understand what you have until it's gone.

My initial kick in the god of war series was to be the first one to finish all the games in the series before my friends... Afterwards, when I started to notice I was getting used to the mech and making faster time in the games(especially GoS and gow1) I started competing with my friends on the in game timer...During this time, internet and game forums were not very popular here in India so we mostly had to depend on our own skills and knowledge... Also we didn't even know GOATS like Satvara existed so somehow getting GOW1 between 2.5 to 3 hours and GoS under 2 hours was a flex for me in my peer group... And then it faded, until norse era came up to get more of the nice stories... But ultimately, it was the ThaRixer video on Satvara that absolutely changed how I looked the game, and many other games... That was what changed the OG gow games completely for me, trying to abuse the game and speedrun it as much as possible...

Also another thing was that since I was a child, I didn't realize that difficulty was supposed to be increased when you get better, so at that time, I had mostly finished the OG games on easy or medium... But when I first played 2018, I said wth lets go hardcore gimme god of war, died a 1000 times min, but managed to kill sigrun after beating that game...

God of war 2 is for me a prime example how good and somewhat important unlockables can be. I used to play games only on easy and normal, but in god of war 2, you could unlock the athena skin, and I always love to play as female characters. The only way to unlock this skin though was to beat the game on it's highest difficulty, and oh boy, on this difficulty you really have to learn how to actual play the game. Well I did it, at least 3 times by now and it opened me up playing more games on their highest difficulty. Heck, I even would argue that god of war 2 and kingdom hearts 2 prepared me for bloodborne, which became one of my other fav. games of all time. That said, I still play games from time to time on normal, just to chill and have some fun, nothing wrong with that. Also as much I like the story of the new god of war game, I still prefer the classic ones. God of war 2018 I played only twice, and thats at least 2 years ago, ragnarok only once, not even bothering with all side missions and then exchanging it for some retro games on our local flea market. The classic though, specially 2 and ghost of sparta are the ones I return to at least once a year.

The closest thing to a Ninja Gaiden spiritual successor I can think of would be The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile by Ska Studios, which released years ago. it's a shorter 2D game but a good one. Alternatively, the upcoming Enenra may satisfy one's desire for speedy ninja shenanigans. I would also recommend to check out the likes of Soulstice, Cookie Cutter, Clash: Artifacts of Chaos, and the upcoming Yasuke: A Lost Descendant, Genokids and Immortal: And the Death that Follows. A few of them aren't hack-and-slash but do have a strong combat focus: - Cookie Cutter is a Metroidvania but combat is like a 2D beat-em-up complete with launching and juggling potential, "spells", and weapons that include the likes of a chainsaw, big fist and electric guitar. There's more too-- in the base game or planned. - Clash: Artifacts of Chaos is more along the lines of God Hand with its gameplay, though not quite as difficult. You can find different martial arts styles and individual attacks to equip and switch between. - Immortal: And the Death that Follows is a 2D perspective 3D beat-em-up with a kind of mythological Hindu Mad Max setting.

Leifthrasir.* It's a PS3/4 remaster of the PS2 fantasy 2D beat-em-up hack n' slash game released the same year as God of War 2 that features beautiful art and drastically reworked combat that enables truely awe-inspiring and satisfying combat. Just watch any of Kagerasimaru's character-specific combo videos to see what's possible. This game doesn't get nearly as much attention so I'm *BEGGING* you to *TRY* it if you haven't already. (Pretty sure there's a demo for it on the PS4) (Oh, and if, like me, the character's combat noises get too irritating for you, you can completely mute that part of the audio without muting character story dialogue, or the other combat noises like impacts and such.)

Also, the way it's meant to be played is if you're having fun playing it. If you're having fun, then you're playing it right. If you're not having fun, then either the game sucks or you're not playing it right.

In a funny twist of events, the first time I got to play this game was on Hard difficulty, in a friend's house. He was playing the game, then offered me the controller, every time I got the controller, sucked pretty bad, obviously. So when I finally got a PS2 and bought the game myself, I challenged me to start on Hard mode from beginning. It was a fun and annoying experience, as every new enemy encounter or boss was always testing my skills or forcing me to do better. Got to stuck to some areas for hours at times. I remember I took an entire night to beat the Minotaur on Hard. It was almost 5 am when I did it. Same happened on Very Hard, being stuck in several more times then. So I never had this feeling of "mindless button masher", as the very first times I tried to "button mash", enemies would kill me EASILY, and it forced me to time my blocks and rolls to be damaged as little as possible, learn patterns, etc. Only recently (after becoming good at Devil May Cry games) I returned to GOW, trying to focus on longer strings, aerial combos, and also keeping the combo meter as high as possible (without abusing magic, of course). The game is much more challenging, thus, fan this way. +I got to discover several things on this game's playstyle, strings and techs which were never catalogued anywhere, just by experimenting...

@@DanteBlack Soulstice, Genokids, Enenra, Immortal: and the Death that Follows, Cookie Cutter, Gori: Cuddly Carnage, Yasuke: A Lost Descendant. Normally i'd give some quick rundowns on all of them but at the time of writing this i'm feeling a bit woozy. I'll leave it at the ones that have released : - Soulstice is one of my favourite games in the entire hack-and-slash/character action genre despite issues of pacing, a few annoying enemy types (about three or four-- the others can have some annoyances, but all of the seven weapons total have utilities to make different enemy types more managable) Has a lot to offer on the front of gameplay, bosses, and a very good story. - Clash: Artifacts of Chaos is a more concise package, worst I can say about it is that you can get lost at times. Has you finding and assigning different martial arts styles and individual attacks to customize your full fighting style with. Fuppin' amazing atmosphere and art direction. - Cookie Cutter's a 2D hand-drawn animated metroidvania with a combat emphasis. Quite fast combat at that, has you throwing enemies into the air or in environmental hazards. Weapons vary from a big fist to an electric guitar to a chainsaw and some more. Solid game despite some issues, like a mid-game crystal mine area (for me at least) and some enemy types. It's a big passion project by its developer and while a finished game as is, he's working on even more content like new areas, characters, story beats and weapons which he has teased on Twitter. The others have yet to come out. A friend of mine described Immortal: And the Death that Follows as Hindu Mad Max Beat-em-Up. Hope these have all sounded interesting to you so far!

TLDR, this genre is peak Nah, I don't think you've been played GOW wrong at all, you played in a way that was most fun to you and got to the end that's all that matters :) One of the main appeals of the GOW and DMC games and other similar game's like it, is the freedom of approach of how you want to play it, want to be stylish? Go for it, want to just enjoy the story and button mash? Do it, another thing is their orbs bonus systems are the cherry on top of the game's mechanics, it's not essential for getting through the game, but it does get the job done in telling you're getting better with positive reinforcement. From my experience, I played GOW1 first before any other hack n slash game and my experience was quite similar to yours, I didn't really care about the orb's bonus or the magic meter resource management contrary to what Under The Mayo would tell you it's not that essential to enjoy the game or to get through it, but I did love the game and sequels even more so, I then got into other hack n slash games after GOW and played DMC and MGR and I love those games just as much, but as I got into DMC that's where things just sort of clicked with me, I started really getting into the orbs bonus and the different weapon types and styles and the want to experiment with my toolkit even tho it didn't really force me to, and the best part about is going back to older hack in slash games like GOW and using my entire toolkit and being stylish/cool while doing it and getting that 'cherry on top' ;) orbs bonus made me fall in love with genre all over again XD
