Another person I like watching analyze OP is Merphy Napier, who also touched on this. I loved her take on Brook and Robin vs Maria, and how awesome it was for their characters and Sanji’s. It not only showed that Sanji knew he wasn’t actually putting Robin in danger because he trusted her, but he was also aware that it would be something she would want to do and didn’t feel burdened to ask. She’s been itching to return the love and protection the SHs gave her and the transaction of trust from ‘one of the wings’ who’s whole thing is protection was kind of heartwarming in retrospect (even if, admittedly, I was so caught up in how the Zoro fans would respond at the time that it took me a second to appreciate it, lol. Nothing against Zoro- love him- but his fanboys were unbearable back in Wano)

Oh yeah any customer service job is hell, but the restaurant induatry takes it to another level. There are many things that could go wrong in the front and back of the house and among the staff, and you have to always keep your cool and analyze the situation quickly. The biggest variable being the customer, from their appearencce, to their mood, to their reactions, and how to deal with that every minute of every hour of the whole day. Obviously Sanji learned how to work both sides of the house under a chef as skilled as Zeff which I always headcanoned that he cooked for their rescuers to convince them to keep himself and Sanji alive. That gives him possibly the most flexible skillset among the strawhats, with power, intelligence, and his cooking with a kind heart to boot.
Sanji's honest smile is my favorite in the series. When sanji talks about his dream I can feel his joy manifesting.

That right there is strength, to get back up after being beaten down and staying true to yourself and your calling

I would argue as well that there is a type of leader that focuses more on serving than dominating. There were moments in the series when Sanji even accidentally gains allies because of his kindness, e.g. Duval and his group, G5 marines, Viola, Pudding, etc. These characters were inspired to follow Sanji because of his kindness and charisma, and I think that can be considered a 'conquering' skill. Egghead has been AMAZING for him! His conflicts in Wano were great for establishing his new direction as a more self-assured shield to the SH and himself, and I really appreciated the focus on his true character in WCI. But WCI and Wano were personal struggles that weren’t ideal or fitting for his preferred methods of tackling conflicts (WCI put too much of a spotlight on him on top of all the inner turmoil, and Wano had a much clearer goal in mind that was organized by others. It was a go big or go home moment and they just needed to wait for Luffy to get Kaido), and considering the rest of Post Timeskip either didn’t have him doing much or didn’t have him in the story, it’s been really exciting to see him be able to fight the way he actually likes to under the right kind of pressure (and boy is there PRESSURE in Egghead). No spoilers- but the crew being as frazzled as they are all lends another opportunity for Sanji to shine like he did in Pre-Timeskip, especially Water 7 and Alabasta. While everyone is caught up with what’s right in front of them, his main objective is to keep the crew functioning and decide the next best course of action to keep them out of harms way. It’s been awhile since he’s had to use his brain like that, and while I loved his character writing (meh about the jokes, lol), this arc really pushed him back into my top 2 favorite characters. Behind Luffy, of course, lol.

The ending to your video literally sent shivers on my entire body. I loved when he called on Robin to help him. I know a lot of people took issue with it, but it was such great character growth on his part. instead of sacrificing himself, without a second thought, he put value into his own life. The Sanji we met at the beginning of one piece would have never called on anybody let alone a woman to help him in that situation. Because that would be putting them in danger, and he believes his life is worth less than others. The Sanji we see now values his life more, he knows this is a fight He can’t win, and he’s willing to rely on his friends to help him.

I think you missed the point of Sanji calling for help from Robin. He didn't change his principles. He STILL doesn't believe in putting a woman in harms way. He simply believes in Robin so much, that he does not see asking her to fight Black Maria as putting her in harms way.
@---ro1fc7 ай бұрын
I think it could go both ways. I lean more heavily on your side, where his trust in others abilities has finally outweighed his willingness to die on a side mission (plus, it’s really cool for Robin’s character to have someone believe in her). But in a sense, even if he knows Robin will be victorious in the end, in the past he wouldn’t have asked for help because he didn’t want to be a burden on others in the slightest, and the risk of Robin getting hit AT ALL would’ve been too much of a disgrace to him. He already believed in Robin since Water 7 (albeit in a different sense), he’s just also willing to believe should live another day and continue to assist her and the rest of the crew as well.

As I rewatched Whole Cake Island that much by now (mostly because I love Katakuri's German VA), I still can't get over that fitting backstory Sanji had received. And all of it connects so well despite certain flaws in his own character. Grown over the course of time. Truly started to trust his friends, allies and crewmates after accepting what he truly is. For me, I did thought back then "wow, cool design, must like" but each arc made him more likeable to me. Also I always loved his more strategic approaches instead going in brute force, as you explained in the video. But something I will never forget is his following encounter with Enel on that flying ship 'Maxim'. Sabotaging its mechanical parts from the very inside. Only to ask the self-proclaimed god to light up his cigarette. Sacrifing himself to possibly crash down Maxim, sadly it did not work out. Still, I remember seeing this as a teenager and it gave me not only goosebumps but laughing out loud in the process. Sadly not too many people understand Sanji's true character as nowadays people are only after certain character's power and cool fights, instead of interesting personality, overwhelming strategic talents and a good philosophy to follow after. Thank you so much for this video, the segment with Pudding almost broke me back into tears again. I do want to see them reunite someday during the story, as it would be the perfect Happy End for Mr. Prince.

Whole Cake Island REALLY turned the corner for Sanji in my eyes. I initially rolled my eyes and thought that it was a copy of Enies Lobby, but the more I think about it, it really wasn't. I never related to Sanji until the moment Pudding initially betrays him. I relate to the aspect of his character in that moment of wanting to be kind to everyone and getting taken advantage of because I'm being kind. Sometimes, a part of me wishes to close off being kind to everyone in fear of getting hurt, but Sanji of all people really inspired me to stay who I am and not give in. It's a totally different strength in comparison to Zoro, who I love just as much and further reminds me why I can't pick one over the other. And that's for all Strawhats and not just the wings of the pirate king. Now that I'm caught up on Egghead, I can't wait for when we get to the end of the journey. It's gonna be beautiful, to say the least 🥹

Good point about Zoro vs Sanji, lol. I love comparisons between the type of strength they provide. Zoro’s raw, physical power and resolve to his promises and responsibilities makes for a leader that’s easy to root for and aspire to become. But even though I used to go back and forth between whichever character was my favorite at a time, recently I find myself more personally affected by the lessons that Sanji’s character inspires about fighting for every part of yourself- but especially the kind and loving parts, which are all too easy to lose in times of hardship.

Thank you for this one. I genuinely cried almost the entire video. Most if not all of the straw hats do that for me at one point or another but it’s been some time since I’ve really reflected on what sanji means to me and his journey over the past 20+ years I’ve been following this masterpiece of a story. The one thing I love about Oda is that he knows exactly how to take something that puts your emotional high towards its peak and when to turn that completely on its head dragging you down into the pits of despair. It works the opposite way too but the thing I’m talking about is how Pudding twists what we know of with the “prince” moniker for Sanji and we can’t help but weep for the man, begging for Luffy to break out and help him. But then there’s the next thing that makes this story truly magical and special for me. Luffy isn’t a white knight. He isn’t the man who will step in and solve all your problems for you. No, instead, he forces you, to confront the reality that is holding you back and speaks to how you can help yourself. Sanji refuses to say what’s really on his mind, what he meds to say to help himself? Nope! Luffy flat out denies that bs and backs Sanji into a corner where he needs to accept that what he wants is something he actively chooses to ask for and receive. Something others can give him and something he can offer not by sacrificing his life but to fight using the life he now chooses to live. One piece is the greatest story ever told and it’s not even a hill I’ll die on. It’s just the truth and it is something I truly want everyone in my life who is willing to experience before the end. To cast off into the vast wide open seas on an epic adventure the likes of which only happen once in a lifetime.

I think of Katakuri Who doesn't have a crazy ambition but love's his family so much that nothing will get in between him and them. Sanji has that as well as his creed If there is an argument for him being a conqueror it could very well be from that

Loved the video! So glad you brought up the Maria encounter. I feel people mostly want to talk about queen since it's in relation to strength but for sanji asking for help was a massive step

Best video of the series so far and best analyzis of Sanji I've seen to this day. Zoro's Morj break down and remarks are more interesting and original than in Mark's Zoro video - which remains still pretty interesting, don't get me wrong - but this video does Sanji full justice like no one else has on KZbin this far. Very interesting points I couldn't put together in words.

Amazing video, I get excited for Sanji's fights more than anyone but I love how at the end of the video, you compared him to Luffy's shield because through the whole series he has always used his heart for others. I even like when they are separated at Saboady and he still fights kuma after Usopp, Zoro and Brook have vanished. Best part about Sanji is that Luffy has known this about him since day once, and even tho he treats him as one of the Straw Hats fighters, Luffy has valued the rest of his character from day one

It’s crazy seeing how much you understand the story of One Piece, the way you break down each character is insanely impressive. Sanji was my favorite character but I didn’t even realize why, you just told me why😂

How could you say he can't get conquerors when luffy himself said he doesn't want to conquer anything he just wants freedom thats literally what it means to be a pirate king in Luffys perspective. Will power is essentially the core part of getting conquerors It's not a contradiction to his character if he wants to keep people around him safe by becoming stronger for their sake

I finally understand why Sanji is my favourite Charakter ! Thank you Mark. I wouldnt have been able to dive so deep to see the reasons he is closest to my heart. He and his development throughout Onepiece, reminds me a lot of myself . Its crazy to think oda can just depict such things in a story naturally. I am baffled and happy to have seen this video. To all whom care for others and tend to be altruistic. Cheers to you!

These videos feel really important because One Piece is so long its so hard to remember everything important about the characters, but you really wrap everything up nicely revealing their true layers.

One thing that most people don't understand is that sanji is willing to sacrifice himself for anyone of his friends People say he only cares about the girls in the crew But actually when he say that it's just a facet We saw him put himself in danger for Usopp more than once and even for Zoro in thriller bark and sabaody In WCI he almost slipped when he said : I don't want to put anyone I mean Nami in danger
@FlowerEmblem7 ай бұрын
Someone pointed out that the Monster Trio all have one other member that they tend to protect more. Luffy is Nami, Zoro is Chopper, and Sanji is Usopp What I absolutely loved about that Sabaody fight was that it showed that, beyond the gags and self-proclamations, when it comes to a life or death situation the Straw Hats would do anything to save their friends. Usopp is brave enough to protect Zoro, Sanji protects the men Usopp/Zoro/Brook, Chopper is willing to become a monster

I also loved how when Sanji does reach out for help from Robin its a dual moment - as Robin also smiles that she is being called for to help a friend, a moment she never thought she'd have growing up.

Of all the Straw Hats, Sanji resonates with me most. I love how fiery and passionate he is, and his passion is matched by his compassion. Behind the fire, there’s such a sweetness to him. By far my favorite Straw Hat. 🥰

thank you, this video feel like a whole therapy to me, while I didn't experience the same struggles as Sanji he's the character that I feel the most identification with, I firstly thought it was only because I'm often goofy and silly around women, like to cook and have the same vision as him about food, but it wasn't just that, I always refuse compliments of people saying that I'm nice and kind, because for some reasons I don't feel like I'm worthy of this words, that I'm not doing that much and it still that the case to this day. Yet your video, your explaination and views of Sanji character make me reconsider that I may be closer to him than I thought, I will try to be more true to me feelings and emotions that I may be worthy of this words and worthy of kindness people also give me
