One Piece is a legendary story filled with a cast of seemingly simple characters. However like anything Eiichiro Oda writes, there's always a lot of careful and clever design behind the characters that colour the pages of this tale. Sanji is no different and much like Zoro, he's another character I feel folks don't fully understand. Today I'm going to dive into his character and see if I can help shed some light!

Oh yeah any customer service job is hell, but the restaurant induatry takes it to another level. There are many things that could go wrong in the front and back of the house and among the staff, and you have to always keep your cool and analyze the situation quickly. The biggest variable being the customer, from their appearencce, to their mood, to their reactions, and how to deal with that every minute of every hour of the whole day. Obviously Sanji learned how to work both sides of the house under a chef as skilled as Zeff which I always headcanoned that he cooked for their rescuers to convince them to keep himself and Sanji alive. That gives him possibly the most flexible skillset among the strawhats, with power, intelligence, and his cooking with a kind heart to boot.

Another person I like watching analyze OP is Merphy Napier, who also touched on this. I loved her take on Brook and Robin vs Maria, and how awesome it was for their characters and Sanji’s. It not only showed that Sanji knew he wasn’t actually putting Robin in danger because he trusted her, but he was also aware that it would be something she would want to do and didn’t feel burdened to ask. She’s been itching to return the love and protection the SHs gave her and the transaction of trust from ‘one of the wings’ who’s whole thing is protection was kind of heartwarming in retrospect (even if, admittedly, I was so caught up in how the Zoro fans would respond at the time that it took me a second to appreciate it, lol. Nothing against Zoro- love him- but his fanboys were unbearable back in Wano)

It's a great video and worth a watch.

I would argue as well that there is a type of leader that focuses more on serving than dominating. There were moments in the series when Sanji even accidentally gains allies because of his kindness, e.g. Duval and his group, G5 marines, Viola, Pudding, etc. These characters were inspired to follow Sanji because of his kindness and charisma, and I think that can be considered a 'conquering' skill. I'm fine with Sanji getting or not getting CoC though, I think it works either way

I love Sanji’s backstory. He grew up being treated like trash because he wasn’t as strong as his genetically modified siblings back on Germa 66. But even after all the abuse he faced he got back and followed his passion for cooking while one day becoming super strong in his own right. That right there is strength, to get back up after being beaten down and staying true to yourself and your calling

I love that he basically proved to himself that no matter what his family said to him, his kindness made him strong, specifically emotionally strong, and that's the important thing his mother gave to him and why he can look down on his "strong" siblings and know that he is ultimately stronger than them, no matter who can hit harder.

Little Garden, Water Seven, Wano act 3. There's been many arcs where Sanji has been absent for multiple chapters and when he shows up he was taking the steps to save the day, or ensuring their safety. In short, if he's not around, he's probably cooking something awesome, and we should let him do that.

I think you missed the point of Sanji calling for help from Robin. He didn't change his principles. He STILL doesn't believe in putting a woman in harms way. He simply believes in Robin so much, that he does not see asking her to fight Black Maria as putting her in harms way.
@---ro1fc
@---ro1fc 5 ай бұрын
I think it could go both ways. I lean more heavily on your side, where his trust in others abilities has finally outweighed his willingness to die on a side mission (plus, it’s really cool for Robin’s character to have someone believe in her). But in a sense, even if he knows Robin will be victorious in the end, in the past he wouldn’t have asked for help because he didn’t want to be a burden on others in the slightest, and the risk of Robin getting hit AT ALL would’ve been too much of a disgrace to him. He already believed in Robin since Water 7 (albeit in a different sense), he’s just also willing to believe should live another day and continue to assist her and the rest of the crew as well.

Nah, imo that doesn’t work. Even if you trust her, you don’t bring someone to an obvious trap by themselves. I’m glad Brook was with her because she would have been caught long ago by Sanji’s mistake. In a real life situation, Sanji would have been a liability.

Egghead has been AMAZING for him! His conflicts in Wano were great for establishing his new direction as a more self-assured shield to the SH and himself, and I really appreciated the focus on his true character in WCI. But WCI and Wano were personal struggles that weren’t ideal or fitting for his preferred methods of tackling conflicts (WCI put too much of a spotlight on him on top of all the inner turmoil, and Wano had a much clearer goal in mind that was organized by others. It was a go big or go home moment and they just needed to wait for Luffy to get Kaido), and considering the rest of Post Timeskip either didn’t have him doing much or didn’t have him in the story, it’s been really exciting to see him be able to fight the way he actually likes to under the right kind of pressure (and boy is there PRESSURE in Egghead). No spoilers- but the crew being as frazzled as they are all lends another opportunity for Sanji to shine like he did in Pre-Timeskip, especially Water 7 and Alabasta. While everyone is caught up with what’s right in front of them, his main objective is to keep the crew functioning and decide the next best course of action to keep them out of harms way. It’s been awhile since he’s had to use his brain like that, and while I loved his character writing (meh about the jokes, lol), this arc really pushed him back into my top 2 favorite characters. Behind Luffy, of course, lol.

I was really looking forward to this video, but it feels so short lol. I could listen to a Sanji analysis all day honestly, I just love him. One of my favorite Sanji moments will always be when he called Robin for help, it just reflected how much character growth Sanji has experienced, and I especially love that Robin understood how big a deal that moment was. I also kind of find it hilarious that the whole cake arc did in fact lead to Sanji getting a powerup, not the point of the arc but in hindsight it did what it did lol, now all that's left is for Sanji to accept that part of himself. Or just never notice his eyebrow keeps changing directions and he just happens to be stronger whenever it does lol.

And I 120% identify with his love of food, his lack of control over his emotions, his complete lack of self worth, how he will sacrifice everything for that small group of people he loves most...and even his bonk-worthy moments are relatable, if only to me 16 year old self

The ending to your video literally sent shivers on my entire body. I loved when he called on Robin to help him. I know a lot of people took issue with it, but it was such great character growth on his part. instead of sacrificing himself, without a second thought, he put value into his own life. The Sanji we met at the beginning of one piece would have never called on anybody let alone a woman to help him in that situation. Because that would be putting them in danger, and he believes his life is worth less than others. The Sanji we see now values his life more, he knows this is a fight He can’t win, and he’s willing to rely on his friends to help him.

As I rewatched Whole Cake Island that much by now (mostly because I love Katakuri's German VA), I still can't get over that fitting backstory Sanji had received. And all of it connects so well despite certain flaws in his own character. Grown over the course of time. Truly started to trust his friends, allies and crewmates after accepting what he truly is. For me, I did thought back then "wow, cool design, must like" but each arc made him more likeable to me. Also I always loved his more strategic approaches instead going in brute force, as you explained in the video. But something I will never forget is his following encounter with Enel on that flying ship 'Maxim'. Sabotaging its mechanical parts from the very inside. Only to ask the self-proclaimed god to light up his cigarette. Sacrifing himself to possibly crash down Maxim, sadly it did not work out. Still, I remember seeing this as a teenager and it gave me not only goosebumps but laughing out loud in the process. Sadly not too many people understand Sanji's true character as nowadays people are only after certain character's power and cool fights, instead of interesting personality, overwhelming strategic talents and a good philosophy to follow after. Thank you so much for this video, the segment with Pudding almost broke me back into tears again. I do want to see them reunite someday during the story, as it would be the perfect Happy End for Mr. Prince.

Just want to share that I love that the main showrunner for Season 2 of the One Piece Live Action, Matt Owens, have consistently said that his favorite strawhats are Sanji and Robin. His favorite is also Law. There’s a video of him tier ranking the OP characters and he puts Sanji, Robin, and Law in S tier rank (if you wonder about the other strawhats, in his opinions Luffy, Nami, Franky, Chopper, Jimbei and Zoro are A, Usopp and Brook are B). Matt Owens is a writer, and from a writing perspective, it makes sense why he likes and fully understands Sanji and Robin, which makes me so excited for Season 2 (especially if it gets more seasons).

This is one of the best videos about Sanji. You understand him so well and it's truly impressive. He has been my favourite for a while, followed shortly by Robin and Corazon. It's nice to see people finally discovering what Sanji is really about and not simplifying his character to a single gag.

I love Sanji and the best part of the Queen fight for me is when he is asking Luffy in his head, "hey, which version of myself would better serve you? Do you want a useless chef who can't fight women or a cold, heartless killing machine?" and he already knows the answer is that Luffy would rather he be himself, no one else and destroys the Germa suit to solidify his resolve

Great points all around. Except with the conquerors arguement. There are many people who have conquerors but whose goal isn't to conqueror. Whitebeard wanted to build a family, Yamato protect Wano, Katakuri be the shield for his siblings, etc. All those conquerors are built on altruism, so why not Sanji too.

How could you say he can't get conquerors when luffy himself said he doesn't want to conquer anything he just wants freedom thats literally what it means to be a pirate king in Luffys perspective. Will power is essentially the core part of getting conquerors It's not a contradiction to his character if he wants to keep people around him safe by becoming stronger for their sake

One thing that most people don't understand is that sanji is willing to sacrifice himself for anyone of his friends People say he only cares about the girls in the crew But actually when he say that it's just a facet We saw him put himself in danger for Usopp more than once and even for Zoro in thriller bark and sabaody In WCI he almost slipped when he said : I don't want to put anyone I mean Nami in danger

Someone pointed out that the Monster Trio all have one other member that they tend to protect more. Luffy is Nami, Zoro is Chopper, and Sanji is Usopp What I absolutely loved about that Sabaody fight was that it showed that, beyond the gags and self-proclamations, when it comes to a life or death situation the Straw Hats would do anything to save their friends. Usopp is brave enough to protect Zoro, Sanji protects the men Usopp/Zoro/Brook, Chopper is willing to become a monster

Amazing video, I get excited for Sanji's fights more than anyone but I love how at the end of the video, you compared him to Luffy's shield because through the whole series he has always used his heart for others. I even like when they are separated at Saboady and he still fights kuma after Usopp, Zoro and Brook have vanished. Best part about Sanji is that Luffy has known this about him since day once, and even tho he treats him as one of the Straw Hats fighters, Luffy has valued the rest of his character from day one

Whole Cake Island REALLY turned the corner for Sanji in my eyes. I initially rolled my eyes and thought that it was a copy of Enies Lobby, but the more I think about it, it really wasn't. I never related to Sanji until the moment Pudding initially betrays him. I relate to the aspect of his character in that moment of wanting to be kind to everyone and getting taken advantage of because I'm being kind. Sometimes, a part of me wishes to close off being kind to everyone in fear of getting hurt, but Sanji of all people really inspired me to stay who I am and not give in. It's a totally different strength in comparison to Zoro, who I love just as much and further reminds me why I can't pick one over the other. And that's for all Strawhats and not just the wings of the pirate king. Now that I'm caught up on Egghead, I can't wait for when we get to the end of the journey. It's gonna be beautiful, to say the least 🥹

Good point about Zoro vs Sanji, lol. I love comparisons between the type of strength they provide. Zoro’s raw, physical power and resolve to his promises and responsibilities makes for a leader that’s easy to root for and aspire to become. But even though I used to go back and forth between whichever character was my favorite at a time, recently I find myself more personally affected by the lessons that Sanji’s character inspires about fighting for every part of yourself- but especially the kind and loving parts, which are all too easy to lose in times of hardship.

I think that there are different kinds of conquerors and that Sanji May actually be one hiding in plain sight. I think of Katakuri Who doesn't have a crazy ambition but love's his family so much that nothing will get in between him and them. Sanji has that as well as his creed If there is an argument for him being a conqueror it could very well be from that

One of my favorite things about these videos is that you don't skimp on post timeskip, their is such amazing writing for the Strawhats there but a lot of people seem to believe "if you're not getting a mega arc centered around you, then you're a forgotten character or not important to the story" and these videos have really demonstrated the growth the Strawhats display, even if they are not the main focus of the arc!

Best video of the series so far and best analyzis of Sanji I've seen to this day. Zoro's Morj break down and remarks are more interesting and original than in Mark's Zoro video - which remains still pretty interesting, don't get me wrong - but this video does Sanji full justice like no one else has on KZbin this far. Very interesting points I couldn't put together in words.

Thank you for this one. I genuinely cried almost the entire video. Most if not all of the straw hats do that for me at one point or another but it’s been some time since I’ve really reflected on what sanji means to me and his journey over the past 20+ years I’ve been following this masterpiece of a story. The one thing I love about Oda is that he knows exactly how to take something that puts your emotional high towards its peak and when to turn that completely on its head dragging you down into the pits of despair. It works the opposite way too but the thing I’m talking about is how Pudding twists what we know of with the “prince” moniker for Sanji and we can’t help but weep for the man, begging for Luffy to break out and help him. But then there’s the next thing that makes this story truly magical and special for me. Luffy isn’t a white knight. He isn’t the man who will step in and solve all your problems for you. No, instead, he forces you, to confront the reality that is holding you back and speaks to how you can help yourself. Sanji refuses to say what’s really on his mind, what he meds to say to help himself? Nope! Luffy flat out denies that bs and backs Sanji into a corner where he needs to accept that what he wants is something he actively chooses to ask for and receive. Something others can give him and something he can offer not by sacrificing his life but to fight using the life he now chooses to live. One piece is the greatest story ever told and it’s not even a hill I’ll die on. It’s just the truth and it is something I truly want everyone in my life who is willing to experience before the end. To cast off into the vast wide open seas on an epic adventure the likes of which only happen once in a lifetime.

Haven't watched the video yet, I just wanted to repeat a comment I made somewhere else that I wanted to share for a while. Hope this doesn't get buried and someone gives it a read: People see Sanji's rule of not hitting women as blatant misogyny and something that only keeps compromising the strawhats missions. I know that Sanji is blatant womanizer a lot of the times, but this rule of his doesn't come from his usual sexism. His no hitting women rule is something Zeff hammered in him as a kid. Zeff means everything to Sanji: He's the who saved Sanji's life, gave him his cooking, gave him his foot fighting stlye, and gave him his morals and turned Sanji into everything he is today. If he breaks the rule set in stone by Zeff, he might as well be betraying everything he is. Also seen opinions that he was actively risking the mission to rescue Robin by not attacking Kalifa, and risking the Wano raid by not fighting Black Maria. The thing you don't realize is, Sanji's morals are just THAT strong. He would even compromise the safety of his friends before he breaks his moral code. We've seen this all the way back in Baratie arc. Sanji was willing to feed Don Krieg knowing full well that Krieg will likely attack Zeff. "Always feed anyone who asks for food" is another moral code he follows and he would risk even Zeff's life in order to not break it. This is also why I like Oda's characters, Sanji's personality in Wano is still true to everything he was defined as during the East Blue. I don't remember who said it (probably was Mark himself), but I've heard that if you want your characters to shine, put them in situations that test their morals to the extreme. Sanji was put in situations where he had to break his code or literally die, and he didn't break. He has the strongest morals I've seen of any character. And we've seen that every time this rule of his is brought up, it always works out with Sanji earning someone's respect. In Enies Lobby, he earned respect from Nami. In Wano, Robin respected him for it. It isn't treated as a character flaw to be fixed because the author never treats it as a problem.

I think we haven't seen his code truly tested yet. We've seen he's willing to die to not break his code. But what if his friends life are at stake? What if we see Nami on the verge of death by an opponent Sanji can easily beat and the only thing standing in his way is his own morals? Then we can truly see what his character is about
@---ro1fc
@---ro1fc 5 ай бұрын
@@john-olivierlukama1548 If Sanji could ‘easily’ beat them, I’d assume he’d be capable of moving Nami to safety in good time and/or getting another crew member to take down the enemy like he did in Wano. Nami had to fight Kalifa when he couldn’t, and he chose to ask Robin to face Maria the next time around. In every other situation where straw hats are in danger and Sanji doesn’t think fighting is the right or necessary option, he either thinks about escape OR the next best option for success (vague example from egghead: like when he decided to just trap a decently capable opponent and forgo a fight entirely). So I don’t really think it’s a matter of “my friends or my principals” that shows his real colors (like OP stated, he was already willing to risk Zeff’s life to uphold his ideals and that says enough on its own), because his true colors encourage him to find smarter ways to navigate circumstances like the one you suggested which don’t rely on fighting as the only solution. I mean, if the opponent was strong enough to pose an actual threat, I don’t see him standing by and LETTING Nami get hurt or abandoning her- I guess I’d just imagine him trying to run with her and relying on his new exoskeleton to take the blows if he was worried about haki damaging the opponent. Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me if Nami would just have to suck it up and go down with him if the enemy was actually that strong, lol. It’s not like she’d hate him for it, because she’s already seen that side in action and knows what he’s about. And while I don’t think Sanji or her would be very happy about it (he clearly wasn’t happy to die to Kalifa, but he was too sacrificial at the time to ask anyone for help), the bottom line- I think- has already been pretty well established.

I love that when Sanji's backstory was finally revealed... It just fit so well and perfectly explained his character. I had been following the series for YEARS before Cake Island, and I remember how there was speculation that Sanji was a Prince because that's the code name he used in Dresrossa. AND THEN HE WAS! Wow! Was that really planned? That's amazing! But man, his personality is clearly made with the background story already in mind that had been kept a lid on for so many years. And why was Sanji able to empathise more with Usopp than others all the way back at Water 7... because Sanji knows what it feels like to be the weak normal one and not measuring up, he knows that feeling of hopelesslness, but also knows it can be overcome! He was able to exactly know what Usopp felt and thus had the little speech, and now it makes so much sense and it's beautiful. And man... What I love so much about that Cake Island arch... When I first read it I was SO convinced Sanji would HAVE to broke one of his own rules, he would have to break his codes to survive... but he DIDN'T! No matter how hard and tough it got, and it got hard, he never broke his own moral codes and THAT'S why he won, THAT'S how he succeeded, by staying TRUE to this own convictions, and that's also how he made Pudding fall genuinely in love with him, he was always honest, he never changed. And it felt so good... It felt so good... and the relief man I didn't want Sanji to break his own morals, and he did! Thank god.

Keep in mind about Luffy's part of the scene; "Without you, I... cannot become the pirate king." Not only was it Luffy being RARELY unconfident, pessimistic, and unfirm (where he is always the opposite), but he let Sanji know he's worth more than what he thinks he is. That's the thing about Luffy. He says some of the best things those that were wronged needed to hear in times of their greatest conflict. I have always had the worst kinds of words in times of my greatest conflicts. It's nearly driven me mad MANY TIMES OVER. If I had to respect any main protagonist regardless of how many I like, it's Luffy for this reason.
@evelynarhondi6375
@evelynarhondi6375 5 ай бұрын
I'm not disagreeing with you. I just think that "pessimistic" may be a strong word for what is happening. Luffy himself had bluntly said to Arlong: "I can't fight with a sword, can't cook, can't navigate, can't lie either. I am confident that I cannot survive by myself". And this is 100% the truth with not an ounce of exaggeration. Luffy is not unconfident, he just knows his strengths and weaknesses. From Arlong Park to Whole Cake Island, nothing has changed in this regard. It's just that Luffy needs to remind Sanji this, that he is totally relying on him for food; which means for survival, which means for achieving his dream.

Luffy: I can't even lie either! Usopp: Hey! That one got me xDDD What I'm trying to convey isn't what's undeniable, what I am conveying is his confidence. Luffy is always optimistic, firm, and/or confident in anyway shape or form about being pirate king. THIS... Was NOT one of them. The reason for such is exactly as you say (hence Luffy's breakdown after losing his crew at Sabaody AND Ace after The Paramount War). The confidence that we haven't seen waver for a long time, wavered once more after Luffy got beaten up by Sanji (despite being confident in waiting for Sanji).
